This information covers fires, false alarms and other incidents attended by firecrews, and the statistics include the numbers of incidents, fires, fatalities and casualties as well as information on response times to fires. CAL FIRE's Fire and Resource Assessment Program (FRAP) annually maintains and distributes an historical fire perimeter dataset from across public and private lands in California. The GIS data is developed with the cooperation of the United States Forest Service Region 5, the Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and is released in the spring with added data from the previous calendar year. Although the dataset represents the most complete digital record of fire perimeters in California, it is still incomplete, and users should be cautious when drawing conclusions based on the data.

This app contains three pages of maps and documentation of the historical fire perimeter metadata:

Historical Fire Perimeters: The landing page highlights the recent large fires (≥5,000 acres) on a backdrop of all of the dataset's documented fire perimeters dating back to 1878. This map includes perimeters symbolized by decade, county boundaries, California Vegetation, and NAIP imagery back to 2005. This page provides users the ability to add their own data or filter the fire perimeter data. It cleanly lists fire perimeters shown on the map with their name, year, and GIS calculated acreage. The user can navigate to the CAL FIRE current incident webpage or provide comments to the dataset's steward.

Times Burned: The second page provides a map showing an analysis performed annually on the fire perimeter dataset to show case burn frequency from 1950 to present for fires greater than one acre.

Fire Across Time: This third page provides a time enabled layer of the fire perimeter dataset, featuring a time slider to allow users to view the perimeter dataset across time.

The final page provides the user with the dataset's metadata, including its most current data dictionary.

Here are a few use cases for this project:

1. Wildfire Early Detection and Alert System: INCENDIOS could be used to analyze images and videos from cameras placed in forests and high-risk fire areas. By rapidly identifying fire or smoke, the system can trigger early warnings to authorities and nearby communities, enabling timely evacuations and firefighting responses.

2. Urban Fire Monitoring and Response: Deploying INCENDIOS in smart city surveillance systems can help identify fires or smoke in urban areas more quickly, reducing response time for firefighters and potentially minimizing property damage or loss of life.

3. Industrial Safety and Fire Prevention: INCENDIOS can be used in factories, power plants, and other industrial facilities to continuously monitor for signs of fire or smoke, allowing for a quicker response to incidents and preventing extensive damage or hazardous situations.

4. Remote Sensing and Environmental Analysis: Integrating INCENDIOS with satellite imagery or aerial photography can provide real-time insights into large-scale fires, such as wildfires or agricultural burning, enabling environmental agencies to track and analyze the impact of fires on air quality, wildlife, and vegetation.

5. Home Security and Fire Detection: INCENDIOS can be implemented in residential security cameras or smart home systems to automatically identify any signs of fire or smoke, immediately notifying homeowners or emergency services in case of a potential threat.

The composite Damage Potential (DP) dataset represents a relative measure of wildfire's potential to damage a home or other structure if one were present at a given pixel, and if a wildfire were to occur (conditional exposure). It is a function of ember load to a given pixel, and fire intensity at that pixel, and considers the generalized consequences to a home from fires of a given intensity (flame length). This index does not incorporate a measure of annual wildfire likelihood.

Import Dataset Updates - Jan. 19, 2024! The Bloomington Fire Department switched to a new RMS starting July 1st 2023. The ITS Applications team preserved continuity between the new and old system. This means new data will be found in this dataset and updated daily but slight tweaks have been made to union the old with the new.

Column notes: Response_time is the difference between arrived_at and enroute_at in minutes. You may notice a handful of response times that are negative or in the hours. This is due to the RMS transition and the occasional update delay to an incident report.
