This dataset contains the processed Hydrology or "Bottle Data" (HYD) data collected on Sprightly cruise SP 9/74. The cruise took place in Western Australia coastal waters and the Indian Ocean during April and May 1974. This dataset has been processed and is archived within the CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research Data Centre in Hobart.

IOCI3, a climate research collaboration between CSIRO, the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) and the Western Australian Government, produced maps of mean hot spell intensity, frequency and duration for the 1958-2010 period using estimates derived from statistical models. They also produced maps of trends in hot spell intensity, frequency and duration for this time period. In addition they provided maps of mean hot spell thresholds, intensity, frequency and duration for the 1981-2010 period using estimates derived from statistical models, and projections of these characteristics for the 2070-2099 period under the A2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions scenario (described in the IPCC Special Report on Emissions Scenarios [SRES]), as well as the difference between these two periods." Results are provided in the JPEG file format. Lineage: High quality station data as well as quarter-degree gridded (0.25°× 0.25° resolution) daily maximum temperature data from BoM Australian Water Availability Project (AWAP) were used to produce these results. Hot spell temperature thresholds were selected using statistical methods. Hot spell occurrence (frequency) was modelled by a Poisson process, hot spell intensity by a generalized Pareto distribution, and hot spell duration through a geometric distribution. The Generalized Linear Model framework was used to estimate the parameters in the model for hot spells. This method was applied to daily maximum temperature data simulated from the CSIRO Cubic Conformal Atmospheric Model (CCAM) for both the present-day and possible future climate under the SRES A2 GHG emissions scenario. The CCAM was nested in the CSIRO Mk3.0 Global Climate Model host for the SRES A2 scenario. Caveats & limitations: The hot spell projections should be seen as initial estimates only, and they should not be used for making impact, vulnerability and risk assessments. They were made using only one climate model (CCAM); more work using an ensemble of global and regional climate model results is required to provide more robust projections of hot spells in Western Australia.
Extreme events are by definition rare, and analysis relies on partial (extreme) datasets (e.g., daily maximum temperatures higher 35 °C). In addition, estimating extremes necessitates extrapolating beyond such relatively small observed records. Consequently, the uncertainty associated with these projections of extremes is large, especially when extrapolating from a small dataset. To produce these projections we used AWAP data was used to overcome data shortages. However, the methods used to construct the AWAP dataset (interpolation) may smooth out some extreme values; this may lead to an underestimation of extremes in some cases. To these uncertainties are added the uncertainties inherent in the use of climate models.

This layer group describes multibeam echosounder data collected on RV Investigator voyage IN2021_V04 titled "Biodiversity Assessment of Australia’s Indian Ocean Territories (IOT)". The voyage took place between June 30 and July 29, 2021, departing from Darwin (NT) and arriving in Hobart (TAS).
The purpose of this voyage was to characterise benthic biodiversity from seamounts (100-3500 m) across the EEZ in Australia’s Indian Ocean Territories (IOT) for the first time.
This dataset is published with the permission of CSIRO. Not to be used for navigational purposes.
The dataset contains bathymetry grids of 10m to 210m resolution of the Indian Ocean Territories produced from the processed EM122 and EM710 bathymetry data. Lineage: Multibeam data was logged from the EM’s in Kongsberg’s proprietary *.all format and was converted to be processed within CARIS HIPS and SIPS version 11.3.8.
Following the initial data conversion into the HIPS and SIPS format, the data was analysed for noise. No tide was applied, and the soundings were reduced to the EGM2008 model using logged ellipsoid referenced heights in the raw data files. Lines were georeferenced using the vessel file appropriate for either the EM122 or EM710.
The data was then gridded at multiple resolutions in python Caris batch script using a Depth filter Vs Resolution guideline derived from AusSeabed Multibeam guidelines v2 and further inspected for outliers. Final raster products are available in L3 folder of this collection. Final processed data were also exported per line as GSF and ASCII format and available in the L2 folder of this collection.

On behalf of Australia, and in support of the Malaysian accident investigation, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) led search operations for missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 in the Southern Indian Ocean. Geoscience Australia provided advice, expertise and support to the ATSB to facilitate marine surveys, which were undertaken to provide a detailed map of the sea floor topography to aid navigation during the underwater search. Prior to the Phase 1 bathymetric survey, very little was known about the sea floor in the MH370 search area, as few marine surveys have taken place in the area. Existing maps of the sea floor were coarse, having been derived from satellites and only providing a general indication of water depth. Before the underwater search for MH370 could begin, it was necessary to accurately map the sea floor to ensure that the search was undertaken safely and effectively. Survey vessels spent months at sea, scanning the sea floor with multibeam sonar and side scan sonar to gather detailed, high-resolution data.
This collation of datasets contains the high resolution raw and processed data acquired during Phase 2 of the search for MH370 as received by third party operators. The Phase 2 underwater search data was acquired by multiple vessels, including the Fugro Equator, Fugro Supporter, Fugro Discovery, Havila Harmony, Dong Hai Jiu 101 and Go Phoenix. Surveys were conducted using towed and autonomous underwater vehicles between September 2014 to January 2017, collecting over 121,000 square kilometres of high resolution data in the search area.
