    Description

    This dataset has been developed by the Australian Government as an authoritative source of indigenous location names across Australia. It is sponsored by the Spatial Policy Branch within the Department of Communications and managed solely by the Department of Human Services.

    The dataset is designed to support the accurate positioning, consistent reporting, and effective delivery of Australian Government programs and services to indigenous locations.

    The dataset contains Preferred and Alternate names for indigenous locations where Australian Government programs and services have been, are being, or may be provided. The Preferred name will always default to a State or Territory jurisdiction's gazetted name so the term 'preferred' does not infer that this is the locally known name for the location. Similarly, locational details are aligned, where possible, with those published in State and Territory registers.

    This dataset is NOT a complete listing of all locations at which indigenous people reside. Town and city names are not included in the dataset. The dataset contains names that represent indigenous communities, outstations, defined indigenous areas within a town or city or locations where services have been provided.

    Description

    Abstract Australia’s Indigenous land and forest estate (2024) is a continental spatial dataset of forest and non-forest land over which Indigenous peoples and communities have ownership, management or co-management, or other special rights. This layer displays the area of land and forest that is in the Indigenous managed and Indigenous co-managed attributes. It was developed from multiple data sources, including national, state and territory datasets related to land in which there is an Indigenous interest. The Indigenous land dataset is then combined with forest cover information from the Forests of Australia (2023) dataset. The dataset was compiled by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) for the National Forest Inventory (NFI), a collaborative partnership between the Australian and state and territory governments. The role of the NFI is to collate, integrate and communicate information on Australia's forests. The NFI applies a national classification to state and territory data to allow seamless integration of these datasets. Multiple independent sources of external data are used to fill data gaps and improve the quality of final datasets. The following attributes are applied in this dataset: Indigenous owned: Freehold land or forest that is owned by Indigenous communities, or land and forest for which ownership is vested through other mechanisms. Indigenous managed: Land or forest that is managed by Indigenous communities. Indigenous co-managed: Land or forest that has formal, legally binding agreements in place to include input from Indigenous people in the process of developing and implementing a management plan. Other special rights: Land or forest subject to native title determinations, registered Indigenous Land Use Agreements and legislated special cultural use provisions. In this dataset, the attributes of Indigenous ownership, Indigenous management or co-management, and other special rights are applied separately. Currency Date modified: 30 June 2023 Publication Date: 28 October 2024 Modification frequency: Every 5 years Data Extent Coordinate reference: GDA94 / Australian Albers Spatial Extent North: -8.0 South: -46.0 East: 168.0 West: 100.0 Source Information Data, Metadata, Maps and Interactive views are available from Australia's Indigenous Land and Forest Estate (2024), Descriptive Metadata PDF. The data was obtained from Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry - Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES). Lineage Statement The process for describing and reporting separately on each of the individual attributes of Indigenous ownership, Indigenous management or co management, or other special rights for Indigenous peoples and communities is described in Jacobsen et al. (2020). The method and data in this data package represents the information on the Indigenous land estate by the above separate attributes in accordance with Jacobsen et al. (2020) and primarily uses data with information current between 2021 and 2023. Additional data previously sourced for the Indigenous estate dataset that informed Australia’s State of the Forests Report 2018 was also used in this compilation. The Indigenous land dataset is combined (intersected) with forest cover information from the Forests of Australia (2023) dataset (ABARES 2023). The resulting output dataset provides information on the Indigenous estate over forest and non-forest land. Information used to develop the Australia’s Indigenous land and forest estate (2024) dataset was sourced from: * Commonwealth Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry * Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water * Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation * National Native Title Tribunal * NSW Land Registry Services * NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water * NT Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics * Queensland Department of Resources * Land Services SA * Tasmania Department of Natural Resources and Environment * Victoria Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action * WA Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions * WA Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage * WA Land Information Authority, trading as Landgate Note: The Digital Atlas of Australia downloaded a copy of the source data in November 2024. To ensure that it was suitable to be hosted through ArcGIS Image Server & Image Dedicated, this copy had RGB fields added to the attribute table to generate a colour map. Data Dictionary

Australia’s Indigenous land and forest estate (2024) presents information on the Indigenous land estate by the separate attributes of ownership, management or co-management, and other special rights, according to the new methodology described in the ABARES report Australia’s Indigenous land and forest estate: separate reporting of Indigenous ownership, management and other special rights (Jacobsen et al. 2020) (available at: https://www.agriculture.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/AusIndigLandForestEstate_v1.0.0.pdf). The Indigenous land dataset is then combined (intersected) with forest cover information from the Forests of Australia (2023) dataset. The resulting output dataset provides information on the Indigenous estate for both land and forest. The Indigenous estate land attributes are as follows: Indigenous owned: freehold land or forest that is owned by Indigenous communities, or land or forest for which ownership is vested through other mechanisms Indigenous managed: land or forest that is managed by Indigenous communities Indigenous co-managed: land or forest that has formal, legally binding agreements in place to include input from Indigenous people in the process of developing and implementing a management plan Other special rights: land or forest subject to native title determinations, registered Indigenous Land Use Agreements, and legislated special cultural use provisions. The Australia's Indigenous land and forest estate (2024) dataset shows that a total of: 154 million hectares of land in Australia (20%) is Indigenous owned, of which 24 million hectares is forest 192 million hectares of land in Australia (25%) is under some form of Indigenous management, comprising 156 million hectares that is Indigenous managed and 36 million hectares that is Indigenous co-managed. Of this, 31 million hectares is forest, comprising 20.7 million hectares that is Indigenous managed and 10.6 million hectares that is Indigenous co-managed 443 million hectares of land in Australia (58%) is subject to other special rights for Indigenous peoples and communities, of which 62 million hectares if forest. These areas of land are not mutually exclusive: there is substantial overlap between Indigenous owned land, Indigenous managed or co-managed land, and land subject to other special rights. Spatial intersection of these attributes confirms the total area of land in the Indigenous estate in Australia as at 2023 was 536 million hectares (70%), and the total area of forest in the Indigenous estate as 70 million hectares, as reported in Indicator 6.4a Area of forest to which Indigenous people have use and rights that protect their special values and are recognised through formal and informal management regimes (available at: https://www.agriculture.gov.au/abares/forestsaustralia/sofr/criterion-6/indicator-6.4a) of Australia’s State of the Forests Report (available at https://www.agriculture.gov.au/abares/forestsaustralia/sofr).

    Description

    This is a superseded dataset, the most recent Australia's Indigenous land and forest estate spatial dataset can be found at: https://www.agriculture.gov.au/abares/forestsaustralia/forest-data-maps-and-tools/spatial-data/indigenous-land-and-forest.\r \r Australia’s Indigenous forest estate (2020) is a continental spatial dataset that identifies and reports separately the individual attributes of Australia’s Indigenous estate, namely the extent of land and forest over which Indigenous peoples and communities have ownership, management or co-management, or other special rights.\r \r The dataset was compiled by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) for the National Forest Inventory (NFI), a collaborative partnership between the Australian and state and territory governments. The role of the NFI is to collate, integrate and communicate information on Australia's forests. The NFI applies a national classification to state and territory data to allow seamless integration of these datasets. Multiple independent sources of external data are used to fill data gaps and improve the quality of the final dataset.\r \r Australia’s National Forest Inventory has previously used the four derived category combinations of Dillon et al. (2015) (https://www.agriculture.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/IndigenousForestEstate_20150828_v1.0.0.pdf) for reporting the Indigenous estate in Australia’s State of the Forests Report 2013 and Australia’s State of the Forests Report 2018. These four categories combined in various ways the individual attributes of the Indigenous estate, with an area of land or forest being allocated to only one of the four categories. However, the categories did not allow separate reporting on Indigenous ownership, management or co-management, or other special rights.\r \r The methodology described in Australia’s Indigenous land and forest estate: separate reporting of Indigenous ownership, management and other special rights (Jacobsen et al. 2020) (https://www.agriculture.gov.au/abares/forestsaustralia/publications/indigenous-estate-report) disentangles the four categories of Dillon et al. (2015), and allows separate reporting of each of Indigenous ownership of land or forest, Indigenous management or co‑management of land or forest, and land or forest over which Indigenous peoples and communities have other special rights. Separate spatial coverages were created for each of these attributes, and this new dataset can form the basis for subsequent reporting on the relationships between Indigenous peoples and land or forest.\r \r The methods and data in this data package use the same sources of data used for assembling the Australia’s Indigenous forest estate (2018) spatial dataset, but presents the information on the Indigenous land estate by the separate attributes ownership, management of co-management, and other special rights, according to the new methodology of Jacobsen et al. (2020). The Indigenous land dataset is also combined (intersected) with forest cover information from the Forests of Australia (2018) dataset. The resulting output dataset provides information on the Indigenous estate for both land and forest.\r \r This dataset is updated every five years for the Australia's State of the Forests Report Series. Description

    This dataset presents the social and economic indicators for the indigenous population of Australia based on the 2016 Census and aggregated following the 2016 edition of the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS). The data has been provided by The National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling (NATSEM) and includes the following indicators: age, sex, employment, education level, occupation, school attendance, language, household relationships, family types, household tenure type, household income, motor vehicles and household family composition. All indicators were extracted from the ABS Tablebuilder system using the usual residence profile. For usual residence data, the ABS moves people back to where they live, rather than using the location the data were collected (place of enumeration). Usual residence data is preferred for individual level data because it removes the effect of respondents travelling or holidaying. All rates were calculated as a proportion of all Indigenous people in the area, excluding any Not Stated or Overseas Visitors. Therefore, summing the rates across all categories for an indicator will give a total of 100%. For more information please view the NATSEM Technical Report. Please note: AURIN has spatially enabled the original data provided directly from NATSEM. Where data values are NULL, the data is either unpublished or not applicable mathematically.

    Description

    This dataset presents information from G07 – Indigenous status by age by sex in Australia based on the general community profile from the 2021 Census. It contains characteristics of persons, families, and dwellings by Statistical Areas Level 2 (SA2), 2021, from the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) Edition 3.

    This dataset is part of a set of web services based on the 2021 Census. It can be used as a tool for researching, planning, and analysis. The data is based on place of usual residence (that is, where people usually live, rather than where they were counted on Census night), unless otherwise stated.

    Small random adjustments have been made to all cell values to protect the confidentiality of respondents. These adjustments may cause the sum of rows or columns to differ by small amounts from table totals. For further information see the 2021 Census Privacy Statement, Confidentiality, and Introduced random error/perturbation.

    Description

    Australia's Indigenous forest estate (2013) v2.0, an update of Australia's Indigenous forest estate (2013), is a continental dataset which identifies forested and non-forested land over which Indigenous Australians have legislated use and rights.

    The Indigenous use and rights information was sourced from multiple Indigenous land ownership, land management and land rights datasets from relevant Australian, state and territory government agencies. The forest cover (National Forest Inventory forest types) information was derived from the Forests of Australia (2013) v2.0 dataset, an update of the Forests of Australia 2013 dataset.

    The update was necessary in order to align the forest cover types of the Forests of Australia 2013 dataset with those reported in Australia's State of the Forests Report 2013 (SOFR 2013) and also to introduce an attribute containing forest category information into the dataset. The update had no impact on the Indigenous land management categories reported by the Australia's Indigenous forest estate dataset, and minimal impact on the area of forest types reported against each land management category.

    The Australia's Indigenous forest estate (2013) v2.0 dataset provides both Indigenous use and rights and forest type information for forested lands, and Indigenous use and rights information only for non-forested lands.

    The dataset was compiled by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) for use in the National Indigenous Forestry Strategy (NIFS) and SOFR 2013. The dataset, compiled for use at the national scale, identifies four nationally consistent Indigenous estate categories which indicate the degree of management control that Indigenous people have over both forested and non-forested land. The categories are: 1. Indigenous owned and managed;

    1. Indigenous managed;
    2. Indigenous co-managed; and
    3. Other Special rights. These categories align with the reporting requirements for the NIFS and SOFR and meet the requirements of the data suppliers.

    Description

    ObjectiveHigh rates of dementia are evident in First Nations populations, and modifiable risk factors may be contributing to this increased risk. This study aimed to use a longitudinal dataset to gain insights into the long-term risk and protective factors for dementia and cognitive impairment not dementia (CIND) in a Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal population in Far North Queensland, Australia.Study Design and SettingProbabilistic data linkage was used to combine baseline health check data obtained in 1998/2000 and 2006/2007 for 64 residents in remote communities with their results on a single dementia assessment 10–20 years later (2015–2018). The relationship between earlier measures and later CIND/dementia status was examined using generalized linear modeling with risk ratios (RRs). Due to the small sample size, bootstrapping was used to inform variable selection during multivariable modeling.ResultsOne third of participants (n = 21, 32.8%) were diagnosed with dementia (n = 6) or CIND (n = 15) at follow-up. Secondary school or further education (RR = 0.38, 95% CI 0.19–0.76, p = 0.006) and adequate levels of self-reported physical activity (RR = 0.26, 95% CI 0.13–0.52, p < 0.001) were repeatedly selected in bootstrapping and showed some evidence of protection against later CIND/dementia in final multivariate models, although these had moderate collinearity. Vascular risk measures showed inconclusive or unexpected associations with later CIND/dementia risk.ConclusionsThe preliminary findings from this small study highlighted two potential protective factors for dementia that may be present in this population. A tentative risk profile for later CIND/dementia risk is suggested, although the small sample size limits the applicability of these findings.

    Description

    The Collaborative Australian Protected Areas Database (CAPAD) 2018 provides both spatial and textual information about government, Indigenous and privately protected areas for Australia, in both the marine and terrestrial environments. This dataset is the marine component of the CAPAD only. Marine CAPAD provides information about off-shore protected areas in both state and Commonwealth waters. State and Territory conservation agencies supplied data current to 30 June 2018. This is the ninth version of the marine database, with previous versions released in 1997, 2002, 2004, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016.The Department also publishes protected areas data for the terrestrial environment. The terrestrial component of the database has been previously released in 1997, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016.CAPAD provides a snapshot of protected areas that meet the IUCN definition of a protected area: "A protected area is a clearly defined geographical space, recognised, dedicated and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values." (IUCN Definition 2008).The department publishes a summary of the CAPAD data biennially on its website at https://www.dcceew.gov.au/environment/land/nrs/science/capad.CAPAD 2018 is available for use through the CC-BY 4.0 licencing model.The main attributes of Marine CAPAD 2018 are described below. For more information please refer to the CAPAD Technical Specification document.Marine CAPAD 2018 Attributes:PA_ID: A unique three digit code for the protected area that should persist between versions of CAPAD. This field was named 'PA_ID_grp' in CAPAD 2016.PA_PID: A unique code for a parcel or zone within a protected area that should persist between versions of CAPAD. The first three digits of the PA_PID code (the PA_ID) are common to all component polygons of a single protected area. Joint management arrangements are recognised by a management board, agreement (e.g. ILUA) or other formal arrangement.P = Private - Private protected areas where land and resource owners hold decision-making authority, responsibility and accountability.COMMENTS: Extra information jurisdictions elect to supply. Due to the change in ENVIRON based categorisation rules in the 2016/2018 versions of CAPAD, it has been noted in the COMMENTS field of marine CAPAD if a record was previously included in terrestrial CAPAD.ENVIRON: The code denotes the environment type conserved in the protected area as described by the data custodian. A protected area can assigned an ENVIRON value of terrestrial, marine or both.T = Terrestrial - Generally includes land and or water above high water mark including aquatic ecosystems.B = Both - Includes land and water both above and below the high water mark.M = Marine - Generally includes land and or water below high water mark and may include islands and reefs above high water mark.Terrestrial CAPAD contains 'T' and 'B' protected areas. Marine CAPAD contains 'M' and 'B' protected areas. If a protected area is coded as 'B' by the data provider, DoEE calculates the proportional representation of marine and terrestrial areas within the protected area (all component polygons combined). If 70% or more of the protected area is marine then the whole protected area is included in the marine CAPAD dataset. If less than 70% protected area is marine then the whole protected area is included in the terrestrial CAPAD dataset.Prior to CAPAD 2016 only ENVIRON ='M' records were included in Marine CAPAD, all ENVIRON = 'T' or 'B' records were included in Terrestrial CAPAD. The method described above for managing ENVIRON = 'B' areas was introduced in CAPAD 2016 (and revised slightly in CAPAD 2018).MGT_PLAN: The CODE for the status of the management plan for the protected

    Description

    Aboriginal cultural heritage refers to the elements, both tangible and intangible, that hold significant value to Aboriginal people for their social, spiritual, historical, scientific, or aesthetic importance within Aboriginal traditions. This could include rock art, ancient caves or burial sites, waterways, ceremonial sites or scar trees. This data set contains Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Places within Western Australia that have been reported to the Registrar of Aboriginal Sites as possible Aboriginal sites within the meaning of Section 5 of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972. This dataset contains records that are: Register: Places assessed as meeting Section 5 of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972. For spatial information related to Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Places, please consult Department’s map viewer https://www.wa.gov.au/government/document-collections/search-aboriginal-cultural-heritage-places-wa Note: to preserve confidentiality, the exact location and extent of some places are not displayed on the map—however a shaded region (generally with an area of at least 4km²) provides a general indication of where the place is located. Some information, including the precision of Aboriginal Place boundaries, is based on historical information provided before the use of accurate spatial referencing tools such as GPS or high-resolution mapping systems. It therefore may be inaccurate and indicative. Please check the status of the ‘boundary reliable’ field for any Aboriginal Heritage Place you are accessing. If you are aware of updated information relating to Aboriginal Heritage Places, please report this information to the Department.
