This data set describes metropolitan areas in the conterminous United States, developed from U.S. Bureau of the Census boundaries of Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Areas (CMSA) and Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA), that have been processed to extract the largest contiguous urban area within each MSA or CMSA.

The 2018 edition of Woods and Poole Complete U.S. Database provides annual historical data from 1970 (some variables begin in 1990) and annual projections to 2050 of population by race, sex, and age, employment by industry, earnings of employees by industry, personal income by source, households by income bracket and retail sales by kind of business. The Complete U.S. Database contains annual data for all economic and demographic variables for all geographic areas in the Woods & Poole database (the U.S. total, and all regions, states, counties, and CBSAs). Documentation

The denominators used to calculate the address ratios are the ZIP code totals. When a ZIP is split by any of the other geographies, that ZIP code is duplicated in the crosswalk file.

**Example: **ZIP code 03870 is split by two different Census tracts, 33015066000 and 33015071000, which appear in the tract column. The ratio of residential addresses in the first ZIP-Tract record to the total number of residential addresses in the ZIP code is .0042 (.42%). The remaining residential addresses in that ZIP (99.58%) fall into the second ZIP-Tract record.

So, for example, if one wanted to allocate data from ZIP code 03870 to each Census tract located in that ZIP code, one would multiply the number of observations in the ZIP code by the residential ratio for each tract associated with that ZIP code.

CBSA definition

A core-based statistical area (CBSA) is a U.S. geographic area defined by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) that consists of one or more counties (or equivalents) anchored by an urban center of at least 10,000 people plus adjacent counties that are socioeconomically tied to the urban center by commuting. Areas defined on the basis of these standards applied to Census 2000 data were announced by OMB in June 2003. These standards are used to replace the definitions of metropolitan areas that were defined in 1990. The OMB released new standards based on the 2010 Census on July 15, 2015.

The National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), previously the National Crime Survey (NCS), has been collecting data on personal and household victimization through an ongoing survey of a nationally-representative sample of residential addresses since 1973. The survey is administered by the United States Census Bureau (under the United States Department of Commerce) on behalf of the Bureau of Justice Statistics (under the United States Department of Justice). Occasionally there have been extract or supplement files created from the NCVS and NCS data series. This extract contains two data files, a weighted person-based file, and a weighted incident-based file, which contain the "core" counties within the top 40 National Crime Victimization Survey Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs). Core counties within these MSAs are defined as those self-representing primary sampling units that are common to the MSA definitions determined by the Office of Management and Budget for the 1970-based, 1980-based, and 1990-based sample designs. Each MSA is comprised of only the core counties and not all counties within the MSA. The person-based file contains select household and person variables for all people in NCVS-interviewed households in the core counties of the 40 largest MSAs from January 1979 through December 2004. The incident-based file contains select household, person, and incident variables for persons who reported a violent crime within any of the core counties of the 40 largest MSAs from January 1979 through December 2004. Household, person, and incident information for persons reporting non-violent crime are excluded from this file. The 40 largest MSAs were determined based on the number of household interviews in an MSA.

The net job and business growth indicator measures the annual change in both the number of firms and the number of employees between 1978 and 2022. The data is categorized by the size of the firm: those with 1-19 employees, those with between 20 and 499 employees, and those with more than 500 employees.

This data contributes to the big picture of economic conditions in Champaign County. More firms and larger employment numbers are generally positive economic indicators, but any strictly economic indicator should be considered in the context of other factors.

The number of firms and number of employees show very different trends.

Historically, there have been significantly more firms with 1-19 employees than firms in the larger two size categories. The number of firms with 1-19 employees has also been relatively consistent until 2021: there were 95 fewer such firms in 2021 than 1978, and the largest year-to-year change in that 43-year period of analysis was a -3.2% decrease between 1979 and 1980. However, there were 437 fewer such firms in 2022 than 1978. There was a decrease in these firms of 12.5% from 2021 to 2022, the only double-digit year-to-year change and the largest year-to-year change over 44 years.

The larger two size categories have shown an increasing trend over the period of analysis. There were 43 more firms with 20-499 employees in 2022 than 1978, a total increase of 9%. The number of firms with more than 500 employees almost doubled, increasing by 206 firms from 212 in 1978 to 418 in 2022, a total increase of 97.2%.

The trends of employment also vary based on firm size. Firms with 1-19 employees have consistently, and unsurprisingly, accounted for less of the total employment than the larger two categories. Employment in firms with 1-19 employees has also remained relatively consistent over the period of analysis. Employment in firms with more than 500 employees saw an overall trend of growth, interrupted by brief and intermittent decreases, between 1978 and 2022. Employment in the middle category (firms with between 20 and 499 employees) was also greater in 2022 than in 1978.

A Difficult Development Area (DDA) for the Low Income Housing Tax Credit program is an area designated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) with high construction, land, and utility costs relative to its Area Median Gross Income (AMGI). All designated DDAs in Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA) or Primary Metropolitan Statistical Areas (PMSA) may not contain more than 20% of the aggregate population of all MSAs/PMSAs, and all designated areas not in metropolitan areas may not contain more than 20% of the aggregate population of the non-metropolitan counties.

Abstract (en): The Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) 1-Percent Sample contains household and person records for a sample of housing units that received the "long form" of the 1990 Census questionnaire. Data items include the full range of population and housing information collected in the 1990 Census, including 500 occupation categories, age by single years up to 90, and wages in dollars up to $140,000. Each person identified in the sample has an associated household record, containing information on household characteristics such as type of household and family income. First, the housing unit serial number is identified on both the housing unit record and on the person record, allowing the file to be processed as a rectangular file. In addition, each person record is assigned an individual weight, allowing users to more closely approximate published reports. Unlike previous years, the 1990 PUMS 1-Percent and 5-Percent Samples have not been released in separate geographic series (known as "A," "B," etc. records). Instead, each sample has its own set of geographies, known as "Public Use Microdata Areas" (PUMAs), established by the Census Bureau with assistance from each State Data Center. The PUMAs in the 1-Percent Sample are based on a distinction between metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas. Metropolitan areas encompass whole central cities, Primary Metropolitan Statistical Areas (PMSAs), Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), or groups thereof, except where the city or metropolitan area contains more than 200,000 inhabitants. In that case, the city or metropolitan area is divided into several PUMAs. Nonmetropolitan PUMAs are based on areas or groups of areas outside the central city, PMSA, or MSA. PUMAs in this 1-Percent Sample may cross state lines. (2) The codebook is provided as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file.
