    Description

The Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) is a hierarchical classification of statistical regions and subdivides the EU economic territory into regions of four different levels (NUTS 0, 1, 2 and 3, moving respectively from larger to smaller territorial units). NUTS 1 is the most aggregated level. An additional Country level (NUTS 0) is also available for countries where the the nation at statistical level does not coincide with the administrative boundaries. For example Mt Athos in Greece and Mellum and Minsener Ogg in Germany. The NUTS classification has been officially established through Regulation (EC) No 2016/2066 of the European Parliament and of the Council and its amendments. A non-official NUTS-like classification has been defined for the EFTA countries and candidate countries. An introduction to the NUTS classification is available here: http://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/nuts/overview. The datasets are based on: EuroBoundaryMap (EBM) from EuroGeographics (scale of 1:100.000), Global Administrative Unit Layer (GAUL) country data from UN/FAO, data from the National Statistical Institute of Turkey (TurkStat) (might vary for different years). The different scale levels were derived by generalisation of the 100K scale. The public datasets are available under the Download link indicated below. Available scales are: 100k, 1M, 3M, 10M, 20M, 60M. Date of the NUTS regions are currently available for the years 2003, 2006, 2010, 2013, 2016 and 2021. The full datasets are available via the EC restricted download link. Here six scale ranges (100K, 1M, 3M, 10M and 20M, 60M) are available. Coverage is the economic territory of the EU, EFTA countries and candidate countries as in the respective year.

    Description

All regional statistics at Eurostat refer to NUTS. However, some data collections use postcodes to reference the geographic location. Therefore, Eurostat has established a link between postcodes and NUTS level 3 codes in order to exploit information which originally is coded only by postcodes.

Various projects in Eurostat and other services of the Commission as well as the European Investment Bank have expressed their need for a link between postcodes and NUTS codes. The most important application at Eurostat is in transport statistics where the information is used to identify the flows of goods transport on roads. Another application is to geo-code address registers with the regional NUTS codes because postcodes are generally available as part of the address.

The TERCET NUTS-postal codes matching tables contain a lookup-list of European postal codes and their corresponding NUTS codes for the NUTS versions 2010, 2013, 2016 and 2021. There are matching tables for most of the EU, Candidate, EFTA and the United Kingdom. Eurostat has applied a number of quality assurance measures to ensure the best possible quality of the data including formatting checks, checks for completeness of postal codes and checks for spatial accuracy of the geocoding.

Additional tables containing distance matrixes for different modes of transport are provided.

Nevertheless, due to the very diverse and complex situation in Europe for postal codes data we cannot guarantee that all postal codes are included and have been correctly matched. Should you detect any errors, we would be grateful if you could notify them to us at ESTAT-USER-SUPPORT@ec.europa.eu. The matching tables have been created with data and tools that allow for their free and public distribution for statistical and other non-commercial purposes.

More information on quality assurance and data sources can be found in the methodological notes.

KNOWN ISSUES FOR NUTS (as of 15/07/2020) * Malta has only higher level Postal districts * Data for CY has gaps for NUTS 2021, GISCO is working on improving the coverage. * Data for Albania and Montenegro are missing, GISCO is looking into improving the coverage.

NUTS3 boundaries generalised to 100m. The Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) were drawn up by Eurostat in order to define territorial units for the production of regional statistics across the European Union. The NUTS classification has been used in EU legislation since 1988, but it was only in 2003 that the EU Member States, the European Parliament and the Commission established the NUTS regions within a legal framework (Regulation (EC) No 1059/2003). The Irish NUTS 3 regions comprise the eight Regional Authorities established under the Local Government Act, 1991 (Regional Authorities) (Establishment) Order, 1993 which came into operation on January 1st 1994. The NUTS 2 regions, which were proposed by Government and agreed to by Eurostat in 1999, are groupings of the Regional Authorities. This dataset is provided by Tailte Éireann

    Description

The harmonization of data granularity in spatial and temporal terms is an important pre-step to any econometric and machine learning applications. Researchers, who wish to statistically test hypotheses on the relationship between agro-meteorological and economic outcomes, often observe that agro-meteorological data is typically stored in gridded and temporally detailed form, while many relevant economic outcomes are only available on an aggregated level. This dataset intends to aid empirical investigations by providing a dataset with monthly meteorological indicators on a European NUTS 3 regional level for 13 countries for the period from 1989 to 2018.

We created this dataset from daily data in a grid of 25km x 25km provided by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. We matched the map with the raw data to a map with the administrative boundaries of European NUTS3 regions. After appropriately weighting, we calculated the monthly, regional mean, variance and kurtosis of the following variables: daily maximum, minimum, average air temperature in degrees Centigrade, sum of precipitation in mm per day and snow depth in cm. We report the covariance between the average temperature and the precipitation as well.

    Description

The presented dataset contains the centroid distance matrix for the different levels of the European Union's (EU) Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) regions in meters, as well as their code, name, level, and country identifier. Centroids are calculated based on the largest contiguous shape of regions. To support EU-related spatial, regional, and geographical studies, an R function is also attached that compiles the aforementioned dataset for the selected (or all) NUTS levels while complementing it with the geometrical data and centroids of regions. Optionally, this R function displays centroids on a map of Europe to ease the verification of their positions.

Analysis of ‘NUTS3 - OSi National Statutory Boundaries’ provided by Analyst-2 (analyst-2.ai), based on source dataset retrieved from http://data.europa.eu/88u/dataset/f01d36a6-8b75-4846-bc5e-febdbd9aafe7 on 14 January 2022.

--- Dataset description provided by original source is as follows ---

The Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) was drawn up by Eurostat in order to define territorial units for the production of regional statistics across the European Union. The NUTS classification has been used in EU legislation since 1988, but it was only in 2003 that the EU Member States, the European Parliament and the Commission established the NUTS regions within a legal framework (Regulation (EC) No 1059/2003). The NUTS 3 boundaries were amended on 21st of November 2016 (Regulation (EC) No 2066/2016). The changes resulting from the amendment are that Louth has moved from the Border to the Mid-East and what was formerly South Tipperary has moved from the South-East to the Mid-West.
The regional authorities and the two regional assemblies were abolished in the Local Government Act 2014 and were replaced with three regional assemblies. The three regional assemblies are groupings of the new NUTS 3 boundaries.
NUTS 3 dataset generated from the 2019 OSi National Statutory Boundary dataset. Ungeneralised.
Coordinate Reference System: Irish Transverse Mercator.

    Description

This dataset represents the regions for levels 1, 2 and 3 of the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) for 2016. The NUTS nomenclature is a hierarchical classification of statistical regions and subdivides the EU economic territory into regions of four different levels (NUTS , 1, 2 and 3, moving respectively from larger to smaller territorial units). This dataset has been created mainly from the EuroBoundary Map v 12 (Eurogeographics) and geographic information from TurkStat for Türkiye. The public dataset is available at 1M, 3M, 10M, 20M, 60M, while the full dataset at 100K is restricted. Coverage is the economic territory of the EU, EFTA countries and candidate countries as in 2016. This metadata only refers to a pre-release version of the full nuts 2016 dataset at 100k (it does not contain Albanian boundaries) and shall only be used internally by the EEA following the conditions stated in the document "GISCO-LicenseconditionsforEGdatasets.pdf" provided with the dataset. This metadata has been slightly adapted from the original metadata file provided by Eurostat (European Commission) and is to be used only for internal EEA purposes. For reference, the original metadata file provided by ESTAT (NUTS_2016.xml) is also available for download together with the dataset. The public datasets, at smaller scales, are available on http://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/gisco/geodata/reference-data/administrative-units-statistical-units/nuts#nuts16.
