                  As one of the biggest social networks worldwide, Instagram is especially popular with teenagers. As of fall 2020, the photo-sharing app ranked third in terms of preferred social network among teenagers in the United States, second to Snapchat and TikTok. Instagram was one of the most influential advertising channels among female Gen Z users when making purchasing decisions. Teens report feeling more confident, popular, and better about themselves when using social media, and less lonely, depressed and anxious.
                  Social media can have negative effects on teens, which is also much more pronounced on those with low emotional well-being. It was found that 35 percent of teenagers with low social-emotional well-being reported to have experienced cyber bullying when using social media, while in comparison only five percent of teenagers with high social-emotional well-being stated the same.     Description

    MultiSocial is a dataset (described in a paper) for multilingual (22 languages) machine-generated text detection benchmark in social-media domain (5 platforms). It contains 472,097 texts, of which about 58k are human-written and approximately the same amount is generated by each of 7 multilingual large language models by using 3 iterations of paraphrasing. The dataset has been anonymized to minimize amount of sensitive data by hiding email addresses, usernames, and phone numbers.

    Disclaimer

    Due to data source (described below), the dataset may contain harmful, disinformation, or offensive content. Based on a multilingual toxicity detector, about 8% of the text samples are probably toxic (from 5% in WhatsApp to 10% in Twitter). Although we have used data sources of older date (lower probability to include machine-generated texts), the labeling (of human-written text) might not be 100% accurate. The anonymization procedure might not successfully hiden all the sensitive/personal content; thus, use the data cautiously (if feeling affected by such content, report the found issues in this regard to dpo[at]kinit.sk). The intended use if for non-commercial research purpose only.

    Data Source

    The human-written part consists of a pseudo-randomly selected subset of social media posts from 6 publicly available datasets:

    1. Telegram data originated in Pushshift Telegram, containing 317M messages (Baumgartner et al., 2020). It contains messages from 27k+ channels. The collection started with a set of right-wing extremist and cryptocurrency channels (about 300 in total) and was expanded based on occurrence of forwarded messages from other channels. In the end, it thus contains a wide variety of topics and societal movements reflecting the data collection time.

    2. Twitter data originated in CLEF2022-CheckThat! Task 1, containing 34k tweets on COVID-19 and politics (Nakov et al., 2022, combined with Sentiment140, containing 1.6M tweets on various topics (Go et al., 2009).

    3. Gab data originated in the dataset containing 22M posts from Gab social network. The authors of the dataset (Zannettou et al., 2018) found out that “Gab is predominantly used for the dissemination and discussion of news and world events, and that it attracts alt-right users, conspiracy theorists, and other trolls.” They also found out that hate speech is much more prevalent there compared to Twitter, but lower than 4chan's Politically Incorrect board.

    4. Discord data originated in Discord-Data, containing 51M messages. This is a long-context, anonymized, clean, multi-turn and single-turn conversational dataset based on Discord data scraped from a large variety of servers, big and small. According to the dataset authors, it contains around 0.1% of potentially toxic comments (based on the applied heuristic/classifier).

    5. WhatsApp data originated in whatsapp-public-groups, containing 300k messages (Garimella & Tyson, 2018). The public dataset contains the anonymised data, collected for around 5 months from around 178 groups. Original messages were made available to us on request to dataset authors for research purposes.

    From these datasets, we have pseudo-randomly sampled up to 1300 texts (up to 300 for test split and the remaining up to 1000 for train split if available) for each of the selected 22 languages (using a combination of automated approaches to detect the language) and platform. This process resulted in 61,592 human-written texts, which were further filtered out based on occurrence of some characters or their length, resulting in about 58k human-written texts.

    The machine-generated part contains texts generated by 7 LLMs (Aya-101, Gemini-1.0-pro, GPT-3.5-Turbo-0125, Mistral-7B-Instruct-v0.2, opt-iml-max-30b, v5-Eagle-7B-HF, vicuna-13b). All these models were self-hosted except for GPT and Gemini, where we used the publicly available APIs. We generated the texts using 3 paraphrases of the original human-written data and then preprocessed the generated texts (filtered out cases when the generation obviously failed).

    The dataset has the following fields:

    • 'text' - a text sample,

    • 'label' - 0 for human-written text, 1 for machine-generated text,

    • 'multi_label' - a string representing a large language model that generated the text or the string "human" representing a human-written text,

    • 'split' - a string identifying train or test split of the dataset for the purpose of training and evaluation respectively,

    • 'language' - the ISO 639-1 language code identifying the detected language of the given text,

    • 'length' - word count of the given text,

    • 'source' - a string identifying the source dataset / platform of the given text,

    • 'potential_noise' - 0 for text without identified noise, 1 for text with potential noise.

    This is a dataset of tweets by and about COVID-aware publics from the 'X' (Twitter) social media platform collected by the author. The dataset consists of 344 textual tweets regarding COVID-related material practices gathered during the research period Jan 2023 - Sep 2024, yet the dataset also includes tweets created before this date.The textual data has been rewritten to fully anonymise the people who made the tweets, and identifiable contexts have been removed.     Databases of highly networked individuals have been indispensable in studying narratives and influence on social media. To support studies on Twitter in India, we present a systematically categorized database of accounts of influence on Twitter in India, identified and annotated through an iterative process of friends, networks, and self-described profile information, verified manually. We built an initial set of accounts based on the friend network of a seed set of accounts based on real-world renown in various fields, and then snowballed friends of friends\" multiple times, and rank ordered individuals based on the number of in-group connections, and overall followers. We then manually classified identified accounts under the categories of entertainment, sports, business, government, institutions, journalism, civil society accounts that have independent standing outside of social media, as well as a category ofdigital first" referring to accounts that derive their primary influence from online activity. Overall, we annotated 11580 unique accounts across all categories. The database is useful studying various questions related to the role of influencers in polarisation, misinformation, extreme speech, political discourse etc.

    Description

    This dataset comprises a set of Twitter accounts in Singapore that are used for social bot profiling research conducted by the Living Analytics Research Centre (LARC) at Singapore Management University (SMU). Here a bot is defined as a Twitter account that generates contents and/or interacts with other users automatically (at least according to human judgment). In this research, Twitter bots have been categorized into three major types:

    Broadcast bot. This bot aims at disseminating information to general audience by providing, e.g., benign links to news, blogs or sites. Such bot is often managed by an organization or a group of people (e.g., bloggers). Consumption bot. The main purpose of this bot is to aggregate contents from various sources and/or provide update services (e.g., horoscope reading, weather update) for personal consumption or use. Spam bot. This type of bots posts malicious contents (e.g., to trick people by hijacking certain account or redirecting them to malicious sites), or promotes harmless but invalid/irrelevant contents aggressively.

    This categorization is general enough to cater for new, emerging types of bot (e.g., chatbots can be viewed as a special type of broadcast bots). The dataset was collected from 1 January to 30 April 2014 via the Twitter REST and streaming APIs. Starting from popular seed users (i.e., users having many followers), their follow, retweet, and user mention links were crawled. The data collection proceeds by adding those followers/followees, retweet sources, and mentioned users who state Singapore in their profile location. Using this procedure, a total of 159,724 accounts have been collected. To identify bots, the first step is to check active accounts who tweeted at least 15 times within the month of April 2014. These accounts were then manually checked and labelled, of which 589 bots were found. As many more human users are expected in the Twitter population, the remaining accounts were randomly sampled and manually checked. With this, 1,024 human accounts were identified.     Instagram data-download example dataset

    In this repository you can find a data-set consisting of 11 personal Instagram archives, or Data-Download Packages (DDPs).

    How the data was generated

    These Instagram accounts were all new and generated by a group of researchers who were interested to figure out in detail the structure and variety in structure of these Instagram DDPs. The participants user the Instagram account extensively for approximately a week. The participants also intensively communicated with each other so that the data can be used as an example of a network.

    The data was primarily generated to evaluate the performance of de-identification software. Therefore, the text in the DDPs particularly contain many randomly chosen (Dutch) first names, phone numbers, e-mail addresses and URLS. In addition, the images in the DDPs contain many faces and text as well. The DDPs contain faces and text (usernames) of third parties. However, only content of so-called `professional accounts' are shared, such as accounts of famous individuals or institutions who self-consciously and actively seek publicity, and these sources are easily publicly available. Furthermore, the DDPs do not contain sensitive personal data of these individuals.

    Obtaining your Instagram DDP

    After using the Instagram accounts intensively for approximately a week, the participants requested their personal Instagram DDPs by using the following steps. You can follow these steps yourself if you are interested in your personal Instagram DDP.

    1. Go to www.instagram.com and log in
    2. Click on your profile picture, go to Settings and Privacy and Security
    3. Scroll to Data download and click Request download
    4. Enter your email adress and click Next
    5. Enter your password and click Request download

    Instagram then delivered the data in a compressed zip folder with the format username_YYYYMMDD.zip (i.e., Instagram handle and date of download) to the participant, and the participants shared these DDPs with us.

    Data cleaning

    To comply with the Instagram user agreement, participants shared their full name, phone number and e-mail address. In addition, Instagram logged the i.p. addresses the participant used during their active period on Instagram. After colleting the DDPs, we manually replaced such information with random replacements such that the DDps shared here do not contain any personal data of the participants.

    How this data-set can be used

    This data-set was generated with the intention to evaluate the performance of the de-identification software. We invite other researchers to use this data-set for example to investigate what type of data can be found in Instagram DDPs or to investigate the structure of Instagram DDPs. The packages can also be used for example data-analyses, although no substantive research questions can be answered using this data as the data does not reflect how research subjects behave `in the wild'.

              The Portuguese footballer is the most-followed person on the photo sharing app platform with 628 million followers. Instagram's own account was ranked first with roughly 672 million followers.

              How popular is Instagram?

              Instagram is a photo-sharing social networking service that enables users to take pictures and edit them with filters. The platform allows users to post and share their images online and directly with their friends and followers on the social network. The cross-platform app reached one billion monthly active users in mid-2018. In 2020, there were over 114 million Instagram users in the United States and experts project this figure to surpass 127 million users in 2023.

              Who uses Instagram?

              Instagram audiences are predominantly young – recent data states that almost 60 percent of U.S. Instagram users are aged 34 years or younger. Fall 2020 data reveals that Instagram is also one of the most popular social media for teens and one of the social networks with the biggest reach among teens in the United States.
