Context

The dataset tabulates the Alberta population distribution across 18 age groups. This Alberta Official Statistic compares the distribution of Alberta’s population by age and sex for two Census years (2006 and 2011). Age and sex are the most basic characteristics of a population. Every population has a different age and sex composition – the number and proportion of males and females in each age group. These characteristics are typically represented in a population pyramid.

Mid-year population estimates are available from the IHDA in for the years 1983 to 2015, by 1) various levels of geography including Alberta Health Services (AHS) Continuum Zones, former Health Regions, Peer Groups, Subzones, Health Status Areas, Aggregate Areas, Local Areas, and Provincial Electoral Districts, and Alberta level, 2) Age: Single year of age, 5-year age groups and combined ages, 3) Sex = Male, Female, and Both.

This dataset presents information on the median age of the population, a measure used to describe the process of aging in the population, is the age at which half of the population is older, and half is younger.

These datasets present information on population projections at the following levels: geography: Alberta, Alberta Health Services (AHS) continuum zones, subzones, aggregate areas, and local areas, age (single year of age, 5-year age groups and combined ages) and sex (male, female and both). Historical population estimates (actuals) are included on the file for comparison/reference.

This table provides statistics on Population by Alberta Health Services Geographic Zones. This table is an Excel version of a table in the "Alberta Health Care Insurance Statistical Supplement" report published annually by Alberta Health.

This Alberta Official Statistic describes the percent change in Alberta’s population between 1986 and 2011 by 5-year census cycles. The population is divided into "Larger Urban Centres" and Rural and Small Town areas. Within rural Alberta, the population is divided into four categories with each category consecutively representing lesser integration with urban economies. The four categories are called Metropolitan Influenced Zones (MIZ) and capture urban integration based on the percent of the working population commuting to urban centers. This dataset is a customization of Statistics Canada data to present information on the fiscal year average from April 2015 to March 2016 in Alberta by age, National Occupational Classification (NOC) groups, and wage distribution.

A population projection is a forecast of future population growth. Future population growth for Alberta is projected under three different growth scenarios: the medium, or reference, scenario and high- and low-growth scenarios. Projections of each component of population growth (fertility, mortality and migration) are developed based on past trends, modified to account for possible future patterns of change.
