Housing Assessment Resource Tools (HART) This dataset contains 2 tables and 5 files which draw upon data from the 2021 Census of Canada. The tables are a custom order and contain data pertaining to older adults and housing need. The 2 tables have 6 dimensions in common and 1 dimension that is unique to each table. Table 1's unique dimension is the "Ethnicity / Indigeneity status" dimension which contains data fields related to visible minority and Indigenous identity within the population in private households. Table 2's unique dimension is "Structural type of dwelling and Period of Construction" which contains data fields relating to the structural type and period of construction of the dwelling. Each of the two tables is then split into multiple files based on geography. Table 1 has two files: Table 1.1 includes Canada, Provinces and Territories (14 geographies), CDs of NWT (6), CDs of Yukon (1) and CDs of Nunavut (3); and Table 1.2 includes Canada and the CMAs of Canada (44). TwitterAcross the Canadian North, Arctic Char, Salvelinus alpinus, are culturally important and critical for maintaining subsistence lifestyles and ensuring food security for Inuit. Arctic Char also support economic development initiatives in many Arctic communities through the establishment of coastal and inland commercial char fisheries. The Halokvik River, located near the community of Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, has supported a commercial fishery for anadromous Arctic Char since the late 1960s. The sustainable management of this fishery, however, remains challenging given the lack of biological data on Arctic Char from this system and the limited information on abundance and biomass needed for resolving sustainable rates of exploitation. In 2013 and 2014, we enumerated the upstream run of Arctic Char in this system using a weir normally used for commercial harvesting. Additionally, we measured fish length and used T-bar anchor tags to mark a subset of the run. Subsequently, we estimated population size using capture-mark-recapture (CMR) methods. The estimated number of Arctic Char differed substantially between years. In 2013, 1967 Arctic Char were enumerated whereas in 2014, 14,502 Arctic Char were enumerated. We attribute this marked difference primarily to differences in weir design between years. There was also no significant relationship between daily mean water temperature and number of Arctic Char counted per day in either year of the enumeration. The CMR population estimates of Arctic Char (those ≥450mm in length) for 2013 and 2014 were 35,546 (95% C.I 30,513-49,254) and 48,377 (95% C.I. 37,398-74,601) respectively. The 95% CI overlapped between years, suggesting that inter-annual differences may not be as extreme as what is suggested by the enumeration. The population estimates reported here are also the first estimates of population size for an Arctic Char stock in the Cambridge Bay region using CMR methodology. Overall, the results of this study will be valuable for understanding how population size may fluctuate over time in the region and for potentially providing advice on the sustainable rates of harvest for Halokvik River Arctic Char. Additionally, the results generated here may prove valuable for validating current stock assessment models that are being explored for estimating biomass and abundance for commercial stocks of Arctic Char in the region.

The Inuit Regions, also known as the Inuit Nunangat, dataset contains the geographical boundaries of the 4 Inuit Regions in Canada: Inuvialuit, Nunavut, Nunavik and Nunatsiavut. The boundaries, land only, have been drawn as per information defined in each land claim agreement. The marine boundaries of the 4 Inuit Regions will soon be available. The Inuit Regions (Inuit Nunangat) geographical boundaries are approximate and should be used for illustration purposes only. This dataset provides the complete course curriculum for asynchronous/synchronous 8-week online course on the visualization of climate change in Arctic locations, namely Nunavut. The program was designed by collaboratively designed by Helen Roos from the ilinniapaa Skills Development Center (Iqaluit, Nunavut), Dr. Olaf Kuhlke of the University of Minnesota Duluth, and Dr. Alec C. Johnson from the University of St. Thomas, as well as local partner organizations including the West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative/Dorset Fine Arts. The program engaged high-school students and young adults in learning about two interrelated components: a) climate change evidence and visualization, utilizing and contributing to the Climate Visuals framework (https://climatevisuals.org/), and b) professional photography/videography. Students learned about existing evidence for climate change in different biomes across the globe, utilized the key principles of visualizing climate change, and practiced how to use photography and documentary filmmaking to collect evidence of climate change in their communities, ultimately creating professional photography and a documentary film that was included as part of the cultural program at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Glasgow in November 2021, curated by the Center for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow, Scotland. This data set includes the curriculum content for Modules 4-7 of the course, which focuses on climate change visualization, photography skills development, and the production of documentary film. The files included are complete downloadable/uploadable Desire2Learn (D2L) Brightspace Learning Management System (LMS) archive, with instructions and assignments. The zipped file included here can be uploaded to Canvas and D2L Brightspace Learning Management Systems, for use in coursework by interested instructors. Separate datasets will include the documentary film produced as a result of this course, and the photography by students.

The north has a higher proportion of youth than the south. The Aboriginal population in the north still exhibits what is termed a "young" population (consult the population pyramids for the Northwest Territories, Yukon and Nunavut). There are several regions in southern Canada that have a low proportion of youth. These tend to be in the agricultural regions of the country. Once the scale has been increased, notice the detailed pattern. The small centres in the Prairies have lower proportions of youth than the surrounding rural area.

TwitterWell-functioning financial systems serve a vital purpose, offering savings, credit, payment, and risk management products to people with a wide range of needs. Yet until now little had been known about the global reach of the financial sector - the extent of financial inclusion and the degree to which such groups as the poor, women, and youth are excluded from formal financial systems. Systematic indicators of the use of different financial services had been lacking for most economies.
The Global Financial Inclusion (Global Findex) database provides such indicators. This database contains the first round of Global Findex indicators, measuring how adults in more than 140 economies save, borrow, make payments, and manage risk. The data set can be used to track the effects of financial inclusion policies globally and develop a deeper and more nuanced understanding of how people around the world manage their day-to-day finances. By making it possible to identify segments of the population excluded from the formal financial sector, the data can help policy makers prioritize reforms and design new policies.
The sample excludes Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. The excluded area represents approximately 0.3% of the total adult population.

The Global Findex indicators are drawn from survey data collected by Gallup, Inc. over the 2011 calendar year, covering more than 150,000 adults in 148 economies and representing about 97 percent of the world's population. Since 2005, Gallup has surveyed adults annually around the world, using a uniform methodology and randomly selected, nationally representative samples. The second round of Global Findex indicators was collected in 2014 and is forthcoming in 2015. The set of indicators will be collected again in 2017.
Surveys were conducted face-to-face in economies where landline telephone penetration is less than 80 percent, or where face-to-face interviewing is customary. The first stage of sampling is the identification of primary sampling units, consisting of clusters of households. The primary sampling units are stratified by population size, geography, or both, and clustering is achieved through one or more stages of sampling. Where population information is available, sample selection is based on probabilities proportional to population size; otherwise, simple random sampling is used. Random route procedures are used to select sampled households. Unless an outright refusal occurs, interviewers make up to three attempts to survey the sampled household. If an interview cannot be obtained at the initial sampled household, a simple substitution method is used. Respondents are randomly selected within the selected households by means of the Kish grid.
Surveys were conducted by telephone in economies where landline telephone penetration is over 80 percent. The telephone surveys were conducted using random digit dialing or a nationally representative list of phone numbers. In selected countries where cell phone penetration is high, a dual sampling frame is used. Random respondent selection is achieved by using either the latest birthday or Kish grid method. At least three attempts are made to teach a person in each household, spread over different days and times of year.
The sample size in Canada was 1,013 individuals.

The questionnaire was designed by the World Bank, in conjunction with a Technical Advisory Board composed of leading academics, practitioners, and policy makers in the field of financial inclusion. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Gallup, Inc. also provided valuable input. The questionnaire was piloted in over 20 countries using focus groups, cognitive interviews, and field testing. The questionnaire is available in 142 languages upon request.
Questions on insurance, mobile payments, and loan purposes were asked only in developing economies. The indicators on awareness and use of microfinance insitutions (MFIs) are not included in the public dataset. However, adults who report saving at an MFI are considered to have an account; this is reflected in the composite account indicator.

TwitterThis data set contains interviews of three hunters from Sanikiliaq, Belcher Islands, in the territory of Nunavut, Canada. The hunters describe their observations of sea ice conditions around the Belcher Islands gathered from their many hunting expeditions. The local and traditional knowledge (LTK) gathered from these interviews reveals that the ice is changing and becoming more dangerous and less predictable than it once was.
In addition to the three video interviews, the hunters drew important ice features and changes on maps which are included as part of the data set. Photographs of ice conditions at specific places on the maps are available. Two of the three interviews are in English; the third is in Inuktitut and English.

This table contains mortality indicators by sex for Canada and all provinces except Prince Edward Island. These indicators are derived from the single-year complete life tables. Mortality indicators derived from three-year life tables are also available (table 13-10-0114). For Prince Edward Island, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, the population sizes are too small to allow the calculation of single-years life tables with sufficient accuracy, but mortality indicators derived from three-year abridged life tables are available (table 13-10-0140).

TwitterNew satellite-derived observations of the cryosphere are being developed by Canadian scientists to contribute a snapshot of the current state of the cryosphere in northern Canada and to generate new information, data sets and monitoring capabilities for tundra and alpine snow cover, seasonal frozen ground, lake ice, albedo, land cover and phenology, snow melt characteristics over ice caps, sea ice fluxes through the Arctic islands, and river ice monitoring in northern Québec. Field campaigns are essential for these satellite retrieval activities, and to provide unique observations on characteristics of the cryosphere. Since April 2007, several field campaigns involving both ground-based surveys of snow cover, glaciers and ice caps, river ice and frozen ground characteristics and aircraft remote sensing have taken place across northern Canada (Yukon, NWT, northern Québec, Nunavut and Labrador). These field measurement data sets are an important Canadian contribution to the IPY "snapshot" by providing key information on the state of the cryosphere in northern Canada and an important baseline for assessing future changes. Many residents in northern Canada depend on frozen rivers and sea ice for transportation routes by snowmobile and sled in order to carry out traditional hunting and fishing activities. Outreach activities with northern communities are focussed on providing new information on current river ice and sea ice con ditions in their local area to assist residents in planning safe navigation routes. The development of specialized river ice and sea ice floe edge map products based on satellite radar images has been achieved through the integration of science and traditional knowledge.
