    Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the Honolulu County population over the last 20 plus years. It lists the population for each year, along with the year on year change in population, as well as the change in percentage terms for each year. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population change of Honolulu County across the last two decades. For example, using this dataset, we can identify if the population is declining or increasing. If there is a change, when the population peaked, or if it is still growing and has not reached its peak. We can also compare the trend with the overall trend of United States population over the same period of time.

    Key observations

In 2023, the population of Honolulu County was 989,408, a 0.54% decrease year-by-year from 2022. Previously, in 2022, Honolulu County population was 994,828, a decline of 0.93% compared to a population of 1 million in 2021. Over the last 20 plus years, between 2000 and 2023, population of Honolulu County increased by 113,624. In this period, the peak population was 1.01 million in the year 2020. The numbers suggest that the population has already reached its peak and is showing a trend of decline. Source: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates Program (PEP).

Downloaded by the Hawaii State GIS Program from the Federal Health Resources and Services Administrations (HRSA) website, 3/10/25 (https://data.hrsa.gov/data/download). These data describe geographic areas and populations with a lack of access to primary care health services. Medically Underserved Areas (MUAs) may be a whole county or a group of contiguous counties, a group of county or civil divisions or a group of urban census tracts in which residents have a shortage of personal health services. Medically Underserved Populations (MUPs) may include groups of persons who face economic, cultural or linguistic barriers to health care. HRSA's Bureau of Health Workforce develops shortage designation criteria and uses them to decide whether or not a geographic area or population group is a MUA or MUP.For more information about this layer and attribute values and meanings please see https://files.hawaii.gov/dbedt/op/gis/data/mua_medically_underserved_areas.pdf or contact the Hawaii Statewide GIS Program, Office of Planning and Sustainable Development, State of Hawaii; PO Box 2359, Honolulu, Hi. 96804; (808) 587-2846; email: gis@hawaii.gov; Website: https://planning.hawaii.gov/gis.

    Measurement technique
The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. To measure the three variables, namely (a) male population, (b) female population and (b) total population, we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the age groups. For age groups we divided it into roughly a 5 year bucket for ages between 0 and 85. For over 85, we aggregated data into a single group for all ages. For further information regarding these estimates, please feel free to reach out to us via email at research@neilsberg.com.

    Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the data for the Honolulu County, HI population pyramid, which represents the Honolulu County population distribution across age and gender, using estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. It lists the male and female population for each age group, along with the total population for those age groups. Higher numbers at the bottom of the table suggest population growth, whereas higher numbers at the top indicate declining birth rates. Furthermore, the dataset can be utilized to understand the youth dependency ratio, old-age dependency ratio, total dependency ratio, and potential support ratio.

    Key observations

    • Youth dependency ratio, which is the number of children aged 0-14 per 100 persons aged 15-64, for Honolulu County, HI, is 27.7.
    • Old-age dependency ratio, which is the number of persons aged 65 or over per 100 persons aged 15-64, for Honolulu County, HI, is 30.1.
    • Total dependency ratio for Honolulu County, HI is 57.8.
    • Potential support ratio, which is the number of youth (working age population) per elderly, for Honolulu County, HI is 3.3.

    Description

This dataset contains O'ahu resident count estimates as a function of travel time out of the standard and extreme tsunami-evacuation zones for three different travel speeds (impaired, slow, and fast walk). The data are organized in a manner which permits summarizing or visualizing the data by tsunami-evacuation zone and/or travel time, with communities listed across the top as columns and individual rows representing the number of residents present in the specific evacuation zone/travel time combination. Due to the nature of the methodology used to distribute residential population to structures, resident numbers are not integers. This dataset is intended for use in the U.S. Geological Survey's O'ahu, HI tsunami evacuation web page (https://geography.wr.usgs.gov/science/vulnerability/oahuEvacDashboard.html). These data support the following publication: Wood, N.J., Jones, J.L., Peters, J., and Richards, K., 2018, Pedestrian-evacuation modeling to reduce vehicle use for distant tsunami evacuations in Hawai'i: International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction, v. 28, p. 271–283, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijdrr.2018.03.009.
