This data was gathered as part of the data mining project for General Assembly Data Science Immersive course.
This data was acquired from Google Books store. Google API was used to acquire the data. Nine features were gathered for each book in the data set. the column names mostly are self explanatory nevertheless, it will be explained below.
I like to thank google for making a free available API for their services and websites. I also would love to acknowledge the effort of the web scraper extension developer, it is really nice and powerful tool for web scraping.

Here is a story. you love reading books, and recently, you bought a book that you thought you liked. However, after reading half the book you still don't feel the enthusiasm and joy you expected. I think that machine learning algorithms might help solve such a problems.

The primary reason for creating this dataset is the requirement of a good clean dataset of books. Being a bookie myself (see what I did there?) I had searched for datasets on books in kaggle itself - and I found out that while most of the datasets had a good amount of books listed, there were either a) major columns missing or b) grossly unclean data. I mean, you can't determine how good a book is just from a few text reviews, come on! What I needed were numbers, solid integers and floats that say how many people liked the book or hated it, how much did they like it, and stuff like that. Even the good dataset that I found was well-cleaned, it had a number of interlinked files, which increased the hassle. This prompted me to use the Goodreads API to get a well-cleaned dataset, with the promising features only ( minus the redundant ones ), and the result is the dataset you're at now.
This data was entirely scraped via the Goodreads API, so kudos to them for providing such a simple interface to scrape their database.
The reason behind creating this dataset is pretty straightforward, I'm listing the books for all book-lovers out there, irrespective of the language and publication and all of that. So go ahead and use it to your liking, find out what book you should be reading next ( there are very few free content recommendation systems that suggest books last I checked ), what are the details of every book you have read, create a word cloud from the books you want to read - all possible approaches to exploring this dataset are welcome. I started creating this dataset on May 25, 2019, and intend to update it frequently. P.S. If you like this, please don't forget to give an upvote!
You have the information about the publisher and the publication date now! Also, multiple authors are now delimited by '/'. Enjoy!
Please read the Goodreads API terms and conditions before you decide to use this dataset anywhere.
All I can say is, this dataset was created in good faith to help bibliophiles like me. I will not be maintaining this dataset anymore because as of December 8th, 2020, Goodreads no longer issues new developer keys for their public developer API and plans to retire the current version of these tools.

In 2021, survey data on book readers in the United States revealed that ** percent of female respondents stated they had read or listened to at least one book in the previous 12 months. The share of men who had read a book in that time frame was slightly lower at ** percent, but marked an increase from the ** percent recorded two years earlier. Book readers in the U.S. Whilst digital formats have overtaken print in terms of popularity and consumption, many U.S. media consumers still enjoy a good book – though women tend to read more books than men. A 2018 survey showed that 11 percent of U.S. women read ** or more books that year, compared to **** percent of male respondents. Women were also more likely to prefer reading books in paperback format, and much less likely to be fans of comic books. Regardless of adults’ preferences, something which many U.S. readers agree on is the importance of reading to children. According to a report on family reading habits, 58 percent of parents with a child aged between three and five years old said that they read aloud to their child **** to ***** times per week. The frequency of read-aloud time diminished as children grew older, usually because the child could then read independently, though some children eventually swap reading for other activities such as playing video games, watching television, or using social media.

The online novel reading market was valued at USD 3.88 billion in 2022 and will reach USD 6.91 billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of 7.5% for the forecast period 2023-2030. Driving factor:
Increasing demand for online books is driving the market of the online novel reading market.
Online books are easily available and have the advantage of dictionaries, summaries, and appendices. We can get a variety of books on online websites. They have easy access by only clicking on the unknown word so we can grab more information which will make reading easier. As more information will be provided, the reader will be more interested in reading the book. For example, Walmart has released a new version of Onn tablets which have unexpected features for Android tablets. Therefore, an increase in the availability of a variety of books results in increasing demand for the online novel reading market.
Restraining factor:
Rising piracy issues tend to hinder the growth of the online novel reading market.
There are some crucial parts included in the E-books. This data should be managed and operated in a very precise manner. The lack of books, ignorance of copyright rules, and poverty are some of the factors affecting piracy issues. Therefore, technological and cultural change also have a negative impact due to the adoption of learning and reading experiences.
Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Online Novel Reading Market: There was a positive impact on the market of online reading as it is easily available on online websites. The online novel reading has many advantages such as being cheaper as compared to hardcover, and also having huge discounts on e-books. This is very attractive for the customers who are buying it for the first time. The online reading market has also decreased the consumption of paper which is used for printing paper books so e-books are eco-friendly in nature. Therefore, downloading online books is a simple process and can be stored on the device. Thus, all these factors increase the market of the online novel reading market. In Brazil, each region has its own cultural identity regarding accent, gastronomy, traditions, all of which may reflect its literature. Specially, we believe that country's background and contextual features are directly related to what people read. Hence, we present an enhanced dataset that comprises cultural, geographic, and socioeconomic information to explore Brazilian cultural identity through reading preference.
As our main data source, we chose the Goodreads website due to the sheer volume of data available and its organized and easily accessible API. We collect data from Brazilian readers through the goodreads library, which provides a Python interface to the Goodreads API. Specifically, we collect members of two of the largest Brazilian reading groups: the "Clube de Leitores em Português" (4,229 members) and the "Goodreads Brasil" (3,222 members). For all members of both groups, we also collect data from their friends. Then, we filter only those containing Brazil as location information from the final users' set. Finally, with the same library, we gather users' bookshelves to assess their reading preferences.
To investigate the Brazilian reading identity, we consider a medley of demographic and socioeconomic data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE): including territorial area, population estimate, demographic density, Human Development Index (HDI), Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and monthly household income per capita. All indicators refer to the year 2020, except the HDI that refers to the year 2017. The data collection was carried out from February 23 to March 04, 2021.
Our final dataset, named as BraCID, comprises:

Connell and Marianne grew up in the same small town, but the similarities end there. At school, Connell is popular and well liked, while Marianne is a loner. But when the two strike up a conversation—awkward but electrifying—something life changing begins.
A year later, they’re both studying at Trinity College in Dublin. Marianne has found her feet in a new social world while Connell hangs at the sidelines, shy and uncertain. Throughout their years at university, Marianne and Connell circle one another, straying toward other people and possibilities but always magnetically, irresistibly drawn back together. And as she veers into self-destruction and he begins to search for meaning elsewhere, each must confront how far they are willing to go to save the other.
Normal People is the story of mutual fascination, friendship and love. It takes us from that first conversation to the years beyond, in the company of two people who try to stay apart but find that they can’t.

According to a survey held in the United States between March and April 2020, 70 percent of respondents said that they read print books the most, with 39 percent of those consumers preferring their books to be new.
The study was conducted as the U.S. went into lockdown to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, however although the virus certainly affected media consumption in the United States, what did not change was consumers' book preferences. Print has always been the most popular book format in the U.S. and figures on increased media consumption during the pandemic showed that even Gen Z, a generation famed for loving digital, were the most likely to be reading books more than usual during the outbreak.
Book consumption in the U.S.
Whilst printed newspapers and magazines have struggled to survive as digital formats grow ever more prevalent and appealing, when it comes to books U.S. consumers still have a clear preference for print. Annual survey data consistently shows that U.S. adults are far more likely to have read a print book in the last year than a digital version thereof, and whilst the popularity of digital books has increased, print remains the favorite.
As far as book buying goes, whilst the number of print books sold in the U.S. fluctuates each year, the figures remain relatively stable. Although unit sales have not surpassed 700 million since 2010, the number came close in 2018 and yearly sales from 2015 to 2019 were higher than the amount recorded in 2004.
