    Description

In 2021, survey data on book readers in the United States revealed that ** percent of female respondents stated they had read or listened to at least one book in the previous 12 months. The share of men who had read a book in that time frame was slightly lower at ** percent, but marked an increase from the ** percent recorded two years earlier. Book readers in the U.S. Whilst digital formats have overtaken print in terms of popularity and consumption, many U.S. media consumers still enjoy a good book – though women tend to read more books than men. A 2018 survey showed that 11 percent of U.S. women read ** or more books that year, compared to **** percent of male respondents. Women were also more likely to prefer reading books in paperback format, and much less likely to be fans of comic books. Regardless of adults’ preferences, something which many U.S. readers agree on is the importance of reading to children. According to a report on family reading habits, 58 percent of parents with a child aged between three and five years old said that they read aloud to their child **** to ***** times per week. The frequency of read-aloud time diminished as children grew older, usually because the child could then read independently, though some children eventually swap reading for other activities such as playing video games, watching television, or using social media.

    Description

According to a survey held in the United States between March and April 2020, 70 percent of respondents said that they read print books the most, with 39 percent of those consumers preferring their books to be new.

The study was conducted as the U.S. went into lockdown to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, however although the virus certainly affected media consumption in the United States, what did not change was consumers' book preferences. Print has always been the most popular book format in the U.S. and figures on increased media consumption during the pandemic showed that even Gen Z, a generation famed for loving digital, were the most likely to be reading books more than usual during the outbreak.

    Book consumption in the U.S.

Whilst printed newspapers and magazines have struggled to survive as digital formats grow ever more prevalent and appealing, when it comes to books U.S. consumers still have a clear preference for print. Annual survey data consistently shows that U.S. adults are far more likely to have read a print book in the last year than a digital version thereof, and whilst the popularity of digital books has increased, print remains the favorite.

As far as book buying goes, whilst the number of print books sold in the U.S. fluctuates each year, the figures remain relatively stable. Although unit sales have not surpassed 700 million since 2010, the number came close in 2018 and yearly sales from 2015 to 2019 were higher than the amount recorded in 2004.

    Description

In Brazil, each region has its own cultural identity regarding accent, gastronomy, traditions, all of which may reflect its literature. Specially, we believe that country's background and contextual features are directly related to what people read. Hence, we present an enhanced dataset that comprises cultural, geographic, and socioeconomic information to explore Brazilian cultural identity through reading preference.

As our main data source, we chose the Goodreads website due to the sheer volume of data available and its organized and easily accessible API. We collect data from Brazilian readers through the goodreads library, which provides a Python interface to the Goodreads API. Specifically, we collect members of two of the largest Brazilian reading groups: the "Clube de Leitores em Português" (4,229 members) and the "Goodreads Brasil" (3,222 members). For all members of both groups, we also collect data from their friends. Then, we filter only those containing Brazil as location information from the final users' set. Finally, with the same library, we gather users' bookshelves to assess their reading preferences.

To investigate the Brazilian reading identity, we consider a medley of demographic and socioeconomic data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE): including territorial area, population estimate, demographic density, Human Development Index (HDI), Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and monthly household income per capita. All indicators refer to the year 2020, except the HDI that refers to the year 2017. The data collection was carried out from February 23 to March 04, 2021.

Our final dataset, named as BraCID, comprises:

    • 38,231 Brazilian Goodreads users
    • 75,093 Distinct books
    • 80 Literary genres
    • 6 IBGE indicators regarding the 27 federative units of Brazil

The European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC) collects timely and comparable multidimensional microdata on income, poverty, social exclusion and living conditions.

The EU-SILC collection is a key instrument for providing information required by the European Semester ([1]) and the European Pillar of Social Rights, and the main source of data for microsimulation purposes and flash estimates of income distribution and poverty rates.

AROPE remains crucial to monitor European social policies, especially to monitor the EU 2030 target on poverty and social exclusion. For more information, please consult EU social indicators.

The EU-SILC instrument provides two types of data:

    • Cross-sectional data pertaining to a given time or a certain time period with variables on income, poverty, social exclusion and other living conditions.
    • Longitudinal data pertaining to individual-level changes over time, observed periodically over four‐or more year rotation scheme (Annex III (2) of 2019/1700).

    EU-SILC collects:

    • annual variables,
    • three-yearly modules,
    • six-yearly modules,
    • ad-hoc new policy needs modules,
    • optional variables.

The variables collected are grouped by topic and detailed topic and transmitted to Eurostat in four main files (D-File, H-File, R-File and P-file).

The domain ‘Income and Living Conditions’ covers the following topics: persons at risk of poverty or social exclusion, income inequality, income distribution and monetary poverty, living conditions, material deprivation, and EU-SILC ad-hoc modules, which are structured into collections of indicators on specific topics.

In 2023, in addition to annual data, in EU-SILC were collected: the three yearly module on labour market and housing, the six yearly module on intergenerational transmission of advantages and disadvantages, housing difficulties, and the ad hoc subject on households energy efficiency.

Starting from 2021 onwards, the EU quality reports use the structure of the Single Integrated Metadata Structure (SIMS).

([1]) The European Semester is the European Union’s framework for the coordination and surveillance of economic and social policies.

    Description

Here are a few use cases for this project:

    1. Educational Tools: The RMAI model can be used to develop applications or tools to teach children or adults about letters and numbers. By scanning real-life objects or text, it can identify the mentioned classes and further enhance the learning experience.

    2. Identification of License Plate Numbers: The model can be employed in surveillance software to identify vehicle license plates. Despite the model not being explicitly trained for this purpose, the ability to recognize the mentioned numeral and letter classes may be sufficient for basic applications.

    3. Robot Navigation: The reference image suggests potential for robot navigation use. Robots could use this model to read numbers and letters in their environment, which could be used in synchronizing tasks or following specified routes in a warehouse or factory setting.

    4. Accessibility Tools: The model can be used to develop applications for visually impaired people to read and comprehend written material. This can range from reading books, recognizing signs, or identifying different objects that have numbers or letters on them.

    5. Data Sorting: In an office or warehouse setting, this model could be used to sort packages, files or items based on numbers and letters. This will help in increasing efficiency and reducing potential errors in the process.

    Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize

New York Times Bestseller | A Read with Jenna Today Show Book Club Pick | A New York Times Book Review Notable Book | TIME Magazine's 100 Must-Read Books of 2019 |

Named one of the Best Books of the Year by NPR, The Washington Post;O: The Oprah Magazine, Real Simple, Good Housekeeping, Vogue, Refinery29, and Buzzfeed

Ann Patchett, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Commonwealth, delivers her most powerful novel to date: a richly moving story that explores the indelible bond between two siblings, the house of their childhood, and a past that will not let them go. The Dutch House is the story of a paradise lost, a tour de force that digs deeply into questions of inheritance, love and forgiveness, of how we want to see ourselves and of who we really are.

At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves.

The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother. The two wealthy siblings are thrown back into the poverty their parents had escaped from and find that all they have to count on is one another. It is this unshakeable bond between them that both saves their lives and thwarts their futures.

Set over the course of five decades, The Dutch House is a dark fairy tale about two smart people who cannot overcome their past. Despite every outward sign of success, Danny and Maeve are only truly comfortable when they’re together. Throughout their lives they return to the well-worn story of what they’ve lost with humor and rage. But when at last they’re forced to confront the people who left them behind, the relationship between an indulged brother and his ever-protective sister is finally tested.

    Description

The data collection comprises three elements that link properties of the words that occur in books suitable for children and young people to the morpheme knowledge that readers display in reading tasks. These three elements include the following:

    (a) A lexical database of the words that occur in 1200 books suitable for children and young people aged 7-16. This database comprises over 100,000 words and a range of psycholinguistic properties such as word frequency and contextual diversity. The corpus from which these words were sourced contains over 70 million words.

    (b) A computational algorithm that parses these words into morphemes and provides data about their frequency of occurrence. Notably, the parser works on morphemes defined orthographically (as opposed to etymologically) and so captures what a child might learn about morphology through reading experience.

    (c) Response time and accuracy data from a large-scale study of human readers that links the corpus-based metrics pertaining to morphemes to reading performance.

Each of these datasets, along with relevant pre-processing and analysis code, is available on the Open Science Framework (OSF). Each of these OSF projects also contains comprehensive documentation to facilitate reuse. Links are available as related resources.

    Description

The aim of this research was to explore whether the advantages of shared book reading (the joint attention and high quality adult language input) remain true where children have language difficulties. We compared parents' input to their young children with language difficulties during shared reading and play activities. Sharing books with young children is potentially an excellent opportunity for language development. The children and adults are jointly focused on the same words and pictures, and the text in children’s books tends to have a more varied vocabulary and more accurate and complex grammar than child-directed speech during play. However, in shared reading interventions, the best results have been shown for children who are already progressing well with spoken communication. Children who are at risk for language development (for example because of a slow start to talking, a family history of problems, or socio-economic disadvantage) have benefited less.
