This publication will provide at a local authority level the percentage of schools providing access to the full core offer of extended services. A new UK government took office on 11th May. This is a statutory return from local authorities giving figures for the number of applications they receive for a place in secondary school, and how many of the offers made were of a preferred school broken down into first preference, second preference, any preferred school etc. The LA includes all applicants resident in their area even if they are requesting, or receive an offer to, schools in another LA. The main entry year into secondary schooling is covered - for most Local Authorities this is a national curriculum year 7, but some Local Authorities with middle schools report on a different year generally 8 or 9. The data are collected on national offer day - 1st March or the next working day - relating to applications for entry into the next academic year. Note this dataset is currently only collected at secondary level. In 2014, however, there will be the first national offer day for entry into primary school 16 April 2014 and the intention is to gather data at primary level as well. The regulations to allow this are currently 21 August 2013 in the final stages of drafting before being laid before parliament.

An extended school is likely to be open to pupils, families and the wider community throughout the school day, before and after school hours, at weekends and during school holidays. The services offered by the school might include childcare and learning and recreational activities for all members of the community. Extended schools recognise the need to work in partnership with other agencies (such as health and social care) to help children and young people achieve their potential. Schools that recognise the need to find the best way to help an individual pupil to learn will want to look at both the pupil's learning needs and at overcoming barriers to learning that may come from outside the school. Having easier access to multi - disciplinary teams can support pupils and teachers. Pupils can benefit through early support so that these problems do not get in the way of their learning, and teachers are able to concentrate on teaching. The Department for Education is committed to continuous improvement in its handling of complaints about schools. The completed report covers complaints that relate to state funded schools including academies and free schools, received by the department in the period 1st August 2012 to July 2013. Prior to July 2012 some complaints about schools were handled by the Secretary of State for Education, some were handled as a pilot by the Local Government Ombudsman(LGO). The Education Act 2011 rationalised the LGO arrangements . In July 2012 the powers of the LGO to consider school complaints were repealed, so that all complainants in England could complain to the Secretary of State about a school. During the passage of the Education Act 2011, the department commissioned independent research about its handling of complaints about schools. This report covers those findings and can be located here:- https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/complaints-about-schools-customer-satisfaction-survey-2013

School level revenue balances for all local authority maintained schools by local authority. These tatistics describing the total revenue balances (showing both committed and uncommitted revenue balances) and also the total revenue balances as a proportion of the total revenue income for LA maintained schools. Tables from 1990/00 onwards available on Department for Education website. A schools total revenue income for the year includes all revenue funding available to the year as well as any additional income generated by the school. This does not include any revenue balances carried forward from previous years. Please note that although figures are shown here for committed and uncommitted balances there is considerable variation in how these are defined at local level meaning that at national level this comparison is not consistent or meaningful. Great caution should therefore be used in interpreting these figures. The tables form part of annual series of school balances statistics which have been published on the Department's Every Child Matters website.

This dataset shows estimated condition backlog by CYC maintained school, 'condition element' (roofs, windows etc), condition grading and priority grading. Condition and priority gradings, which are combined to give a single score for each issue, are as follows: Condition A: Good / B: Satisfactory / C: Poor / D: Bad Priority 1: Urgent / 2: Essential / 3: Desirable / 4: Long term These data are collected through condition surveys of school properties carried out periodically. No surveys are currently scheduled for 2015. The level of government maintenance grant funding received by the Local Authority determines how many issues can be addressed in any one financial year.
