This annual study provides selected income and tax items classified by State, ZIP Code, and the size of adjusted gross income. These data include the number of returns, which approximates the number of households; the number of personal exemptions, which approximates the population; adjusted gross income; wages and salaries; dividends before exclusion; and interest received. Data are based who reported on U.S. Individual Income Tax Returns (Forms 1040) filed with the IRS. SOI collects these data as part of its Individual Income Tax Return (Form 1040) Statistics program, Data by Geographic Areas, ZIP Code Data.

Taxes are grouped into six major categories: property, general sales, personal income, business income, real estate-related, and other. We also separate non-exported and exported taxes, that is, taxes levied on New York City resident households and businesses and taxes levied on nonresidents. Taxes in the former category enter into the calculation of New York City tax effort. The latter category includes sales and other taxes on hotel occupancy, city income taxes paid by commuters into the city, and portions of state and MTA auto rental taxes remitted in the city. We could not, however, estimate and net out non-hotel sales and other taxes paid by visitors to the city. Nor could we account, as we did in our previous report, for any New York City tax imports, that is, taxes of other, non-overlapping jurisdictions paid by city residents.1 For brief descriptions of the tables and figures along with methodological notes please see the Tax Effort Background and Methodology document.

The Current Population Survey (CPS) is a monthly survey of households conducted by the Bureau of Census for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The earnings data are collected from one-fourth of the CPS total sample of approximately 60,000 households. Data measures usual hourly and weekly earnings of wage and salary workers. All self-employed persons are excluded, regardless of whether their businesses are incorporated. Data represent earnings before taxes and other deductions and include any overtime pay, commissions, or tips usually received. Earnings data are available for all workers, by age, race, Hispanic or Latino ethnicity, sex, occupation, usual full- or part-time status, educational attainment, and other characteristics. This table contains data on the living wage and the percent of families with incomes below the living wage for California, its counties, regions and cities/towns. Living wage is the wage needed to cover basic family expenses (basic needs budget) plus all relevant taxes; it does not include publicly provided income or housing assistance. The percent of families below the living wage was calculated using data from the Living Wage Calculator and the U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey. The table is part of a series of indicators in the Healthy Communities Data and Indicators Project of the Office of Health Equity. The living wage is the wage or annual income that covers the cost of the bare necessities of life for a worker and his/her family. These necessities include housing, transportation, food, childcare, health care, and payment of taxes. Low income populations and non-white race/ethnic have disproportionately lower wages, poorer housing, and higher levels of food insecurity. Revenue Statistics in Latin America

Taxing Wages

Taxing Wages provides unique information on income tax paid by workers and on social security contributions levied upon employees and their employers in OECD countries. Family benefits paid as cash transfers are specified. Amounts of taxes and benefits are detailed programme by programme, for eight household types which differ by income level and household composition. Results reported include the marginal and effective tax burden for one- and two-earner families, and total labour costs of employers. The data covers the years starting from 2000 extending until 2012. Taxes and benefits

The Benefits and Wages series addresses the complicated interactions of tax and benefit systems for different family types and labour market situations. The series is a valuable tool used to compare the different benefits made available to those without work and those with different levels of in-work income. It covers 37 countries (29 OECD countries and from 2005 Cyprus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta and Slovenia and from 2008 Bulgaria and Romania) for the period 2001-2008. The main social policy areas are as follows: taxes and social security contributions due on earnings and benefits, unemployment benefits, social assistance, family benefits, housing benefits, and in-work benefits. These social policies can be further examined by family type, number of children, first earner, second earner and employment status, 2007 edition of Benefits and Wages, statistics, country specific files and tax-benefit models and calculator, which provide detailed descriptions of all cash benefits available to those in and out of work as well as the taxes they were liable to pay are available on Benefits and Wages. This layer was developed for public use of the most current median household income, median home value and median owner-occupied residential real estate taxes compiled by the US Census Bureau from the 2017 to 2021 American Community Survey at the Census Tract (neighborhood) level.

All data are 2020 Census Tract (neighborhood) level five-year estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey from 2017 to 2021. Median household income earned in the past 12 months. Includes wage or salary income; net self-employment income; interest, dividends, or net rental or royalty income or income from estates and trusts; Social Security or Railroad Retirement income; Supplemental Security Income (SSI); public assistance or welfare payments; retirement, survivor, or disability pensions; and all other income. Median home value (an estimate of how much the property would sell for if it were for sale) for properties owned, being bought, vacant for sale, or sold but not occupied at the time of the survey. Data are based on values reported by property owners. Median real estate taxes (due to all taxing jurisdictions) for owner-occupied properties are based on taxes reported by homeowners to the Census Bureau in the American Community Survey from 2017 to 2021.
