    This is a monthly report on publicly funded community services for children, young people and adults using data from the Community Services Data Set (CSDS) reported in England. The CSDS is a patient-level dataset and has been developed to help achieve better outcomes for children, young people and adults. It provides data that will be used to commission services in a way that improves health, reduces inequalities, and supports service improvement and clinical quality. These services can include NHS Trusts, health centres, schools, mental health trusts, and local authorities. The data collected in CSDS includes personal and demographic information, diagnoses including long-term conditions and disabilities and care events plus screening activities. These statistics are classified as experimental and should be used with caution. Experimental statistics are new official statistics undergoing evaluation. They are published in order to involve users and stakeholders in their development and as a means to build in quality at an early stage. More information about experimental statistics can be found on the UK Statistics Authority website.     About this dataset

    Context

    The dataset tabulates the England population by age cohorts (Children: Under 18 years; Working population: 18-64 years; Senior population: 65 years or more). It lists the population in each age cohort group along with its percentage relative to the total population of England. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population distribution across children, working population and senior population for dependency ratio, housing requirements, ageing, migration patterns etc.

    The Adults’ People and Nature Survey for England gathers information on people’s experiences and views about the natural environment, and its contributions to our health and wellbeing.

    Data is published quarterly as Accredited Official Statistics. Since June 2023 we no longer publish the full dataset on gov.uk. The full dataset will instead be published via https://beta.ukdataservice.ac.uk/datacatalogue/series/series?id=2000123" class="govuk-link">UK Data Service.

    Description

    The Welsh Health Survey (WHS) collects information about the health of people living in Wales, including health status, lifestyle and health behaviours, and use of health services. This dataset covers the seventh year of the current WHS, which ran for 12 months from January 2010. This teaching dataset provides a simplified introductory to the WHS and contains a selection of key variables for adults. With fewer variables than the main WHS dataset, it is easier to use and may be particularly helpful for new users.

    WHS in its current form began in 2003. The survey is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) and is carried out by the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen). Each year, data is collected from a representative sample of around 15,000 adults and 3,000 children in Wales, using a short household interview and individual self-completion questionnaires completed by all adults and up to two children in each household.

    The content of the adult questionnaire has remained fairly stable since 2003, covering:

    • health status, including general health and wellbeing, illness, eyesight and hearing
    • health-related behaviours such as smoking, drinking, fruit and vegetable consumption, Body Mass Index and physical activity
    • health services including GP, hospital visits and use of other services like dentists, opticians and NHS Direct
    Welsh Health Survey, 2010: Teaching Dataset (Adults) is a simplified introductory dataset which covers adults only. The main WHS 2010 adult dataset (available from the UK Data Archive under SN 6895) contains over 400 variables. This teaching dataset is a slimmed down version containing 54 key variables. This makes it easier to use, particularly for new or occasional users. All adult respondents are included in the dataset, and so any results produced from it should match those derived from the more detailed dataset and those shown in the WHS annual report.

    Next Steps (also known as the Longitudinal Study of Young People in England (LSYPE1)) is a major longitudinal cohort study following a nationally representative group of around 16,000 who were in Year 9 attending state and independent schools in England in 2004, a cohort born in 1989-90.

    The first seven sweeps of the study were conducted annually (2004-2010) when the study was funded and managed by the Department for Education (DfE). The study mainly focused on the educational and early labour market experiences of young people.

    In 2015 Next Steps was restarted, under the management of the Centre for Longitudinal Studies (CLS) at the UCL Faculty of Education and Society (IOE) and funded by the Economic and Social Research Council. The Next Steps Age 25 survey was aimed at increasing the understanding of the lives of young adults growing up today and the transitions out of education and into early adult life.

    The Next Steps Age 32 Survey took place between April 2022 and September 2023 and is the ninth sweep of the study. The Age 32 Survey aimed to provide data for research and policy on the lives of this generation of adults in their early 30s. This sweep also collected information on many wider aspects of cohort members' lives including health and wellbeing, politics and social participation, identity and attitudes as well as capturing personality, resilience, working memory and financial literacy.

    Next Steps survey data is also linked to the National Pupil Database (NPD), the Hospital Episode Statistics (HES), the Individualised Learner Records (ILR) and the Student Loans Company (SLC).

    There are now two separate studies that began under the LSYPE programme. The second study, Our Future (LSYPE2) (available at the UK Data Service under GN 2000110), began in 2013 and will track a sample of over 13,000 young people annually from ages 13/14 through to age 20.

    When researchers are approved/accredited to access a Secure Access version of Next Steps, the Safeguarded (EUL) version of the study - Next Steps: Sweeps 1-9, 2004-2023 (SN 5545) - will be automatically provided alongside.

    The Next Steps: Linked Health Administrative Datasets (Hospital Episode Statistics), England, 1998-2023: Secure Access study includes data files from the NHS Digital HES database for those cohort members who provided consent to health data linkage in the Age 25 sweep. The HES database contains information about all hospital admissions in England. The following linked HES data are available:

    1) Accident and Emergency (A&E)
    The A&E dataset details each attendance to an Accident and Emergency care facility in England, between 01-04-2007 and 31-03-2023 (inclusive). It includes major A&E departments, single specialty A&E departments, minor injury units and walk in centres in England.

    2) Admitted Patient Care (APC)
    The APC data summarises episodes of care for admitted patients, where the episode occurred between 01-04-1997 and 31-03-2023 (inclusive).

    3) Critical Care (CC)
    The CC dataset covers records of critical care activity between 01-04-2009 and 31-03-2023 (inclusive).

    4) Out Patient (OP)
    The OP dataset lists the outpatient appointments between 01-04-2003 and 31-03-2023 (inclusive).

    5) Emergency Care Dataset (ECDS)
    The ECDS lists the emergency care appointments between 01-04-2020 and 31-03-2023 (inclusive).

    6) Consent data
    The consents dataset describes consent to linkage, and is current at the time of deposit.

    CLS/ NHS Digital Sub-licence agreement
    NHS Digital has given CLS permission for onward sharing of the Next Steps/HES dataset via the UKDS Secure Lab. In order to ensure data minimisation, NHS Digital require that researchers only access the HES variables needed for their approved research project. Therefore, the HES linked data provided by the UKDS to approved researchers will be subject to sub-setting of variables. The researcher will need to request a specific sub-set of variables from the Next Steps HES data dictionary, which will subsequently make available within their UKDS Secure Account. Once the researcher has finished their research, the UKDS will delete the tailored dataset for that specific project. Any party wishing to access the data deposited at the UK Data Service will be required to enter into a Licence agreement with CLS (UCL), in addition to the agreements signed with the UKDS, provided in the application pack.

    Latest edition information
    For the third edition (January 2025), the data have been updated to include linked data the financial years 2017-2022. In addition, a new dataset for Emergency Care (ECDS) episodes has been added, along with a dataset detailing the consent for linkage. Furthermore, the study documentation has also been updated.

    SUMMARYThis analysis, designed and executed by Ribble Rivers Trust, identifies areas across England with the greatest levels of physical illnesses that are linked with obesity and inactivity. Please read the below information to gain a full understanding of what the data shows and how it should be interpreted.ANALYSIS METHODOLOGYThe analysis was carried out using Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) data, derived from NHS Digital, relating to:- Asthma (in persons of all ages)- Cancer (in persons of all ages)- Chronic kidney disease (in adults aged 18+)- Coronary heart disease (in persons of all ages)- Diabetes mellitus (in persons aged 17+)- Hypertension (in persons of all ages)- Stroke and transient ischaemic attack (in persons of all ages)This information was recorded at the GP practice level. However, GP catchment areas are not mutually exclusive: they overlap, with some areas covered by 30+ GP practices. Therefore, to increase the clarity and usability of the data, the GP-level statistics were converted into statistics based on Middle Layer Super Output Area (MSOA) census boundaries.For each of the above illnesses, the percentage of each MSOA’s population with that illness was estimated. This was achieved by calculating a weighted average based on:- The percentage of the MSOA area that was covered by each GP practice’s catchment area- Of the GPs that covered part of that MSOA: the percentage of patients registered with each GP that have that illnessThe estimated percentage of each MSOA’s population with each illness was then combined with Office for National Statistics Mid-Year Population Estimates (2019) data for MSOAs, to estimate the number of people in each MSOA with each illness, within the relevant age range.For each illness, each MSOA was assigned a relative score between 1 and 0 (1 = worst, 0 = best) based on:A) the PERCENTAGE of the population within that MSOA who are estimated to have that illnessB) the NUMBER of people within that MSOA who are estimated to have that illnessAn average of scores A & B was taken, and converted to a relative score between 1 and 0 (1= worst, 0 = best). The closer to 1 the score, the greater both the number and percentage of the population in the MSOA predicted to have that illness, compared to other MSOAs. In other words, those are areas where a large number of people are predicted to suffer from an illness, and where those people make up a large percentage of the population, indicating there is a real issue with that illness within the population and the investment of resources to address that issue could have the greatest benefits.The scores for each of the 7 illnesses were added together then converted to a relative score between 1 – 0 (1 = worst, 0 = best), to give an overall score for each MSOA: a score close to 1 would indicate that an area has high predicted levels of all obesity/inactivity-related illnesses, and these are areas where the local population could benefit the most from interventions to address those illnesses. A score close to 0 would indicate very low predicted levels of obesity/inactivity-related illnesses and therefore interventions might not be required.LIMITATIONS1. GPs do not have catchments that are mutually exclusive from each other: they overlap, with some geographic areas being covered by 30+ practices. This dataset should be viewed in combination with the ‘Health and wellbeing statistics (GP-level, England): Missing data and potential outliers’ dataset to identify where there are areas that are covered by multiple GP practices but at least one of those GP practices did not provide data. Results of the analysis in these areas should be interpreted with caution, particularly if the levels of obesity/inactivity-related illnesses appear to be significantly lower than the immediate surrounding areas.2. GP data for the financial year 1st April 2018 – 31st March 2019 was used in preference to data for the financial year 1st April 2019 – 31st March 2020, as the onset of the COVID19 pandemic during the latter year could have affected the reporting of medical statistics by GPs. However, for 53 GPs (out of 7670) that did not submit data in 2018/19, data from 2019/20 was used instead. Note also that some GPs (997 out of 7670) did not submit data in either year. This dataset should be viewed in conjunction with the ‘Health and wellbeing statistics (GP-level, England): Missing data and potential outliers’ dataset, to determine areas where data from 2019/20 was used, where one or more GPs did not submit data in either year, or where there were large discrepancies between the 2018/19 and 2019/20 data (differences in statistics that were > mean +/- 1 St.Dev.), which suggests erroneous data in one of those years (it was not feasible for this study to investigate this further), and thus where data should be interpreted with caution. Note also that there are some rural areas (with little or no population) that do not officially fall into any GP catchment area (although this will not affect the results of this analysis if there are no people living in those areas).3.     Description

    The measure shows the percentage of adults receiving secondary mental health services living independently at the time of their most recent assessment, formal review or other multidisciplinary care planning meeting. Adults 'in contact with secondary mental health services' is defined as those aged 18 to 69 who are receiving secondary mental health services and who are on the Care Programme Approach (CPA). 'Living independently, with or without support' refers to accommodation arrangements where the occupier has security of tenure or appropriate stability of residence in their usual accommodation in the medium-to-long-term, or is part of a household whose head holds such security of tenure/residence. These accommodation arrangements are recorded as settled accommodation in the Mental Health Minimum Data Set. The calculation of the measure was changed in 2013-14. Previously, outcome scores were calculated from annual totals from the MHMDS, whereas now the outcome is calculated each month and the ASCOF measure for the year is derived as an average of these monthly scores. In 2017-18 The Mental Health Services Dataset (MHSDS) methodology has also been updated so that only whole numbers are published. Only covers people receiving partly or wholly supported care from their Local Authority and not wholly private, self-funded care. Data Source: Mental Health Minimum Data Set'. Data is Powered by LG Inform Plus and automatically checked for new data on the 3rd of each month.

    Description

    The dataset contains self-reported patient-level data for adults adults and young people or their parents/carers with CKD who are under the care of NHS hospital renal centres in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The data are collected annually via a national survey. Kidney PREM data are anonymised and include socio-demographic information and 39 questions measuring patient experience of kidney care. The kidney PREM has been collected since 2016 and in 2019 almost 16,500 people treated at almost all of the UK’s adult renal centres participated.
