Every year thousands of individuals and entities file business formation applications in the United States. These applications are filed with the state and it is the first step in the process of forming your own business. The United States Census Bureau collects data on these filings and releases a public dataset every quarter.
The business applications measured here are applications for tax IDs from the IRS called Employee Identification Numbers (EIN). An EIN is basically a social security number (SSN) for your business that you must receive from the IRS to open a bank account for your business and complete the application process in your state. So this dataset measures the number of people from each state and county who have filed an application for an Employee Identification Number (EIN).
This dataset was collected from the U.S. Census Bureau. It was part of the annual release of Business Formation Statistics on their website.
This dataset contains two csv files. One on business application data by State and another on business application data by County.
State - Abbreviated state name County - County that each EIN application came from County Code - This is a 4 or 5 digit number that identifies each county. It is made by combining the FIP state and FIP county number. fipstate - two digit FIPS codes that identify unique geographic areas. Makes up the first two digits in the County Code. fipcty - A county FIPS code is 2-3 digits that identifies a unique geographic area. It makes up the last 2-3 digits in the County Code. 2005-2019 - Years in which business applications were filed.
Year - Year in which EIN application was filed (2006-2021). Week - The number of the week in the year in which the application was filed (1-52). State - Abbreviated state name from which EIN application was filed. Business Applications - This is the total number of EIN applications from that state filed this week. High-Propensity Applications - This is the number of EIN applications filed that are considered high-propensity applications. Based on the applications filed these businesses have a high propensity (or high likelihood) of transitioning into businesses with a payroll. Applications w/ Planned Wages - This column consists of the number of high-propensity business applications that indicate a planned date for paying wages. Applications from Corporations - This column consists of a subset of the high-propensity business applications that came from a corporation or service corporation.

Nonemployer Statistics is an annual series that provides statistics on U.S. businesses with no paid employees or payroll, are subject to federal income taxes, and have receipts of $1,000 or more ($1 or more for the Construction sector). This program is authorized by the United States Code, Titles 13 and 26. Also, the collection provides data for approximately 450 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) industries at the national, state, county, metropolitan statistical area, and combined statistical area geography levels. The majority of NAICS industries are included with some exceptions as follows: crop and animal production; investment funds, trusts, and other financial vehicles; management of companies and enterprises; and public administration. Data are also presented by Legal Form of Organization (LFO) (U.S. and state only) as filed with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Most nonemployers are self-employed individuals operating unincorporated businesses (known as sole proprietorships), which may or may not be the owner's principal source of income. Nonemployers Statistics features nonemployers in several arts-related industries and occupations, including the following: Arts, entertainment, and recreation (NAICS Code 71) Performing arts companies Spectator sports Promoters of performing arts, sports, and similar events Independent artists, writers, and performers Museums, historical sites, and similar institutions Amusement parks and arcades Professional, scientific, and technical services (NAICS Code 54) Architectural services Landscape architectural services Photographic services Retail trade (NAICS Code 44-45) Sporting goods, hobby, and musical instrument stores Sewing, needlework, and piece goods stores Book stores Art dealers Nonemployer Statistics data originate from statistical information obtained through business income tax records that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) provides to the Census Bureau. The data are processed through various automated and analytical review to eliminate employers from the tabulation, correct and complete data items, remove anomalies, and validate geography coding and industry classification. Prior to publication, the noise infusion method is applied to protect individual businesses from disclosure. Noise infusion was first applied to Nonemployer Statistics in 2005. Prior to 2005, data were suppressed using the complementary cell suppression method. For more information on the coverage and methods used in Nonemployer Statistics, refer to NES Methodology. The majority of all business establishments in the United States are nonemployers, yet these firms average less than 4 percent of all sales and receipts nationally. Due to their small economic impact, these firms are excluded from most other Census Bureau business statistics (the primary exception being the Survey of Business Owners). The Nonemployers Statistics series is the primary resource available to study the scope and activities of nonemployers at a detailed geographic level. For complementary statistics on the firms that do have paid employees, refer to the County Business Patterns. Additional sources of data on small businesses include the Economic Census, and the Statistics of U.S. Businesses. The annual Nonemployer Statistics data are available approximately 18 months after each reference year. Data for years since 2002 are published via comma-delimited format (csv) for spreadsheet or database use, and in the American FactFinder (AFF). TwitterCounty Business Patterns (CBP) is an annual series that provides economic data by industry at the U.S., State, County and Metropolitan Area levels. This series includes the number of establishments, employment during the week of March 12, first quarter payroll, and annual payroll. CBP provides statistics for businesses with paid employees for the U.S., Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas. Census Bureau staff identified a processing error that affects selected data from the 2014 County Business Patterns (CBP). As a result, we suppressed 2014 employment and payroll totals in the Health Care and Social Assistance sector (Sector 62) for the following geographies: U.S.; Michigan; Battle Creek, MI metro area; Calhoun County, MI; and the 3rd congressional district of Michigan. This processing error did not affect other sectors. While suppressed values can be derived by subtraction, we do not recommend using the derived values in any analyses. The Census Bureau plans to release revised statistics at a later date.

The net job and business growth indicator measures the annual change in both the number of firms and the number of employees between 1978 and 2022. The data is categorized by the size of the firm: those with 1-19 employees, those with between 20 and 499 employees, and those with more than 500 employees.
This data contributes to the big picture of economic conditions in Champaign County. More firms and larger employment numbers are generally positive economic indicators, but any strictly economic indicator should be considered in the context of other factors.
The number of firms and number of employees show very different trends.
Historically, there have been significantly more firms with 1-19 employees than firms in the larger two size categories. The number of firms with 1-19 employees has also been relatively consistent until 2021: there were 95 fewer such firms in 2021 than 1978, and the largest year-to-year change in that 43-year period of analysis was a -3.2% decrease between 1979 and 1980. However, there were 437 fewer such firms in 2022 than 1978. There was a decrease in these firms of 12.5% from 2021 to 2022, the only double-digit year-to-year change and the largest year-to-year change over 44 years.
The larger two size categories have shown an increasing trend over the period of analysis. There were 43 more firms with 20-499 employees in 2022 than 1978, a total increase of 9%. The number of firms with more than 500 employees almost doubled, increasing by 206 firms from 212 in 1978 to 418 in 2022, a total increase of 97.2%.
The trends of employment also vary based on firm size. Firms with 1-19 employees have consistently, and unsurprisingly, accounted for less of the total employment than the larger two categories. Employment in firms with 1-19 employees has also remained relatively consistent over the period of analysis. Employment in firms with more than 500 employees saw an overall trend of growth, interrupted by brief and intermittent decreases, between 1978 and 2022. Employment in the middle category (firms with between 20 and 499 employees) was also greater in 2022 than in 1978.
This data is from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Business Dynamics Statistics Data Tables. This data is at the geographic scale of the Champaign-Urbana Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), which is comprised of Champaign and Piatt Counties, or a larger area than the cities or Champaign County.

The Esri geocoder integrates an address-based approach with more than forty-five million residential and commercial U.S. address records from the Tele Atlas Address Points database. This database maps street addresses to a physical location so each address is a fixed point and not an interpolation from an address range. The geocoder uses address locators in a cascading fallback approach to ensure a match for as many records as possible. The primary locator utilizes the HERE Address Points database. The secondary locator utilizes the HERE Street Address Range database. Records that did not match fall back to the geocode provided by Infogroup. Businesses can be retrieved by their Standard Industrial Classification Code (SIC) as well as by North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Code and Location. The Infogroup Business File can be used for locating both competitors and marketing opportunities. This data is current as of Feb. 2019.
