    Description

Data files containing detailed information about vehicles in the UK are also available, including make and model data.

Some tables have been withdrawn and replaced. The table index for this statistical series has been updated to provide a full map between the old and new numbering systems used in this page.

Tables VEH0101 and VEH1104 have not yet been revised to include the recent changes to Large Goods Vehicles (LGV) and Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV) definitions for data earlier than 2023 quarter 4. This will be amended as soon as possible.

    Recent changes

A number of changes were introduced to these data files in the 2022 release to help meet the needs of our users and to provide more detail.

Fuel type has been added to:

    • df_VEH0120_GB
    • df_VEH0120_UK
    • df_VEH0160_GB
    • df_VEH0160_UK

Historic UK data has been added to:

    • df_VEH0124 (now split into 2 files)
    • df_VEH0220
    • df_VEH0270

A new datafile has been added df_VEH0520.

We welcome any feedback on the structure of our data files, their usability, or any suggestions for improvements; please contact vehicles statistics.

    How to use CSV files

CSV files can be used either as a spreadsheet (using Microsoft Excel or similar spreadsheet packages) or digitally using software packages and languages (for example, R or Python).

When using as a spreadsheet, there will be no formatting, but the file can still be explored like our publication tables. Due to their size, older software might not be able to open the entire file.

    Description

Dataset showing how much fuel each council vehicle has consumed, by year and by fuel type. Dataset guidance The following information refers to the columns in the data: Fleet = fleet number (specific number used to identify a vehicle) Vehicle = vehicle type Fuel = fuel used in litres Dist.Run = Total mileage for the reporting period MPG = Miles Per Gallon Type = D: Diesel, G: Gas Oil Please Note In some cases there may be an asterix in Dist.Run or 'ERROR' in MPG. This is due to an incorrect speedometer reading being input at some time during the report period. When an asterix is present, it may also mean that MPG is incorrect in each case. Where the Fleet number shows a number plate, these vehicles are not council owned but hire vehicles. Parks and Countryside service manage their own fuel stations which are not shown on this dataset. Further Information If you have any further queries you can contact the Head of Fleet Services, Terry Pycroft, by emailing terry.pycroft@leeds.gov.uk or calling 0113 378 1440.

    Context

What would we use this dataset for? Firstly, crime prevention and detection. Following on, so much more else too, like finer traffic control management. Want to make a case to your local council for building that bypass around your village, already?

    Content

With a comprehensive set of images of each of the popular vehicle brands, it should be possible to "teach" a machine-learning application to recognize car brands in real time from live video and camera observations. This gives an added attribute to a vehicle-of-interest's registration / license plate, or at least provides some backup information where the license plate could not be read.

These images have all been manually curated to prevent any ambiguities in the ML process, and advertisements and other useless vehicle views (like vehicle interiors and photos of your smiling salesman) have been removed.

    Acknowledgements

The data collection process is described in https://github.com/gerritonagoodday/VehicleBrandDatasetScraping and used web scraping from popular car deal websites. I used ScrapingBee to do the web scraping where websites had put up obstacles to prevent web scraping.

If you want to enhance the dataset further or create datasets for other countries besides the UK, you can make a few configuration changes in the Python scripts. You will also need your own API key, at $29 per month. Sign up through this link and get your own API key:

    Inspiration

Southern Africa has a huge problem with crime, corruption, and wildlife poaching. Much of this crime is committed by government officials, directly or indirectly. The problem to secure convictions has always been to pinpoint the culprits with irrefutable evidence within an already corrupt judiciary system. This could go some way towards achieving this.

    Description

The census is undertaken by the Office for National Statistics every 10 years and gives us a picture of all the people and households in England and Wales. The most recent census took place in March of 2021.The census asks every household questions about the people who live there and the type of home they live in. In doing so, it helps to build a detailed snapshot of society. Description

In 2022, around **** million motor vehicles were sold in the United Kingdom, down from its peak at around *** million units in 2016. This figure represents a decrease of *** percent year-on-year. Sales recovery does not match 2019 levels In 2022, the UK overtook France as the second-largest car market in Europe, a position it had lost since 2019. New passenger car registrations had grown in the country in 2023, up to the highest volume recorded since their dramatic drop in 2020. However, amid Brexit, the automotive semiconductor shortage, raw material price inflation, and an overall cost of living crisis, the UK's automotive industry has faced various challenges and has yet to reach its pre-COVID-19 pandemic level. The impact of inflation on car purchases The United Kingdom recorded its highest inflation rate since the 1990s in 2022, a situation which marginally improved in 2023. New cars were particularly impacted by the inflation, with their consumer price index being at its highest in the past 15 years in 2023. Despite the inflating prices, car purchasing intentions remained relatively stable based on surveys ending in September 2023 and September 2024, with around **** of UK residents reporting their intention of buying a car in the 12 months following the survey. This is, however, a positive development compared to purchase intentions reported in that same survey ending in September 2022.

    Description

    Dataset population: Households

    Accommodation type

The type of accommodation used or available for use by an individual household. Examples include the whole of a terraced house, or a flat in a purpose-built block of flats.

    Car or van availability

The number of cars or vans that are owned, or available for use, by one or more members of a household. This includes company cars and vans that are available for private use. It does not include motorbikes or scooters, or any cars or vans belonging to visitors.

Households with 10 to 20 cars or vans were counted as having only 1. Responses indicating a number of cars or vans greater than 20 were treated as invalid and a value was imputed.

The count of cars or vans in an area relates only to households. Cars or vans used by residents of communal establishments were not counted.

Number of usual residents aged 17 or over

This derived variable provides a count of the number of people aged 17 or over in the household.

    A household is defined as:

    • One person living alone
    • A group of people (not necessarily related) living at the same address who share cooking facilities and share a living room, sitting room or dining area.

    This includes:

    • Sheltered accommodation units in an establishment where 50 per cent or more have their own kitchens (irrespective of whether there are other communal facilities)
    • All people living in caravans on any type of site that is their usual residence (this will include anyone who has no other usual residence elsewhere in the UK)

A household must contain at least one person whose place of usual residence is at the address. A group of short-term residents living together is not classified as a household, and neither is a group of people at an address where only visitors are staying.

    Description

The United Kingdom produced roughly 905,100 passenger cars in 2023. This marked the first year when figures increased since they started declining in 2016. Compared to 2022, production increased by approximately 16.8 percent in 2023. Challenges on the domestic front The United Kingdom’s automotive industry has been struggling following the Brexit referendum and was hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, supply chain shortages, and raw material price increases. The United Kingdom was once the largest exporter of cars, and its long-standing brands still enjoy success worldwide. The UK domestic market, however, has been faring slightly worse than production for overseas. UK auto industry loses ground In 2023, the United Kingdom did not make it into the top 10 in a list of leading car producers worldwide. That same year, China was the world’s leading manufacturer of such motor vehicles. The country produced a staggering 26.1 million units.
