    Ethnic group classifies people according to their own perceived ethnic group and cultural background.

    The concept of a Household Reference Person (HRP) was introduced in the 2001 Census (in common with other government surveys in 2001/2) to replace the traditional concept of the 'head of the household'. HRPs provide an individual person within a household to act as a reference point for producing further derived statistics and for characterising a whole household according to characteristics of the chosen reference person.

    Household composition

    Household composition classifies households according to the relationships between the household members. Households consisting of one family and no other usual residents are classified according to the type of family (married, same-sex civil partnership or cohabiting couple family, or lone parent family) and the number of dependent children. Other households are classified by the number of people, the number of dependent children, or whether the household consists only of students or only of people aged 65 and over.

    Study Overview These data were collected as part of a longitudinal study of adolescent health and well-being collected in Columbus, Ohio (Adolescent Health and Development in Context Study). The larger goals of the project (R01DA042080) were to understand how geospatial exposures predicted substance use. More specifically, Specific Aims 1a & 1b were to longitudinally and cross-sectionally determine how neural function and structure is reshaped by EtV in the community (1a) and substance use (1b). Specific Aim 2 was to use baseline as well as longitudinal neural changes to predict subsequent substance use and identify neural mediators. Specific Aim 3 was to identify risk and resilience factors that alter the effects of community EtV on the neural embedding of EtV as well as the neural prediction of substance use outcomes. The participants in this longitudinal neuroimaging study were recruited from the Adolescent Health and Development in Context study (Boettner, B., Browning, C. R., & Calder, C. A. (2019).     Study Area The study area is a contiguous space within the Interstate 270 loop outerbelt freeway, encompassing a majority of the city of Columbus as well as several suburban municipalities.

    Sampling The sampling frame was based on a combination of a vendor-provided list of households in the study area with high probability of meeting eligibility criteria and directory data from public school districts represented in the study area. Households were mailed a letter or postcard describing the study, followed by interviewer calls to the household to solicit participation in the study. Once eligibility was confirmed with the household, one randomly selected youth aged 11-17 and one primary caregiver (English speaking) were recruited to participate in the study.

    The racial/ethnic identity of the first wave of the AHDC study was 1,405 youth with 47% white, 38% Black, 5% Hispanic/Latino, 8% multiracial, and 2% Asian. The sample closely approximates the population in the study area with respect to household income of families with children and youth racial/ethnic composition, with the exception that the AHDC sample has a somewhat higher percent of youth who identified as Black compared with the 2009-2013 American Community Survey (ACS) estimates of the area.

    For Wave 3 (the first neuroimaging wave), in addition to the participants recruited from the original sample, a refresher sample was recruited. These participants were recruited from within the families of the original sample (i.e. siblings) as well as using the same methods of recruiting the initial wave from low-income census tracts as well as tabling at schools in these tracts.

    Study Design The study employs a prospective cohort design in which the data on youth and caregivers were collected at multiple time points. The Wave 1 field period began in spring 2014 and was completed in summer 2016. Wave 2 was conducted between January and December 2016. Wave 3 (the first imaging wave) was conducted between July of 2018 and March of 2020, concluding with the cessation of in person activities due to COVID-19 related restrictions on in-person activities. Wave 4 was run between July and October of 2020. Wave 5 was run between March and July of 2021. Wave 6 (the 2nd imaging wave) was run between May of 2022 and January of 2024.

    Study Procedures Within each wave, participant data were collected over a weeklong period. An Entrance Survey with both a focal youth and his or her caregiver was followed by a seven-day smartphone-based Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking and Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) data collection period (EMA Week), and either a final Exit Survey at the end of the week (Waves 1 and 2) or a session at the Center for Cognitive and Behavioral Brain Imaging at the Ohio State University (Waves 3 and 6). Waves 4 and 5 were slightly different due to restrictions on in-person activity. Wave 4 consisted of a phone interview and online survey that was completed remotely with participants downloading an app on their phone for responding to EMAs and GPS tracking. Wave 5 only consisted of an online survey and the responding to EMAs with GPS tracking.

    The Entrance Survey was collected at the initial in-home visit with adolescent participants and their caregivers. It included a wide range of measures across social, economic, psychological, health, and behavioral domains. Both adolescent and caregiver participants reported on geographic location of and experiences at routine activities (e.g. school, work, church, stores, relative’s house).

    The real-time Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) surveys were collected via self-administered survey on project-provided smartphones. The study phones also passively collected GPS spatial coordinates during the seven-day EMA collection period. Youth respondents were prompted up to five times a day, and asked to report on their location, network partner presence, risk behaviors such as substance use, mood, surrounding social climate, and sleep patterns.

    Waves 1 and 2: A second visit, the Exit Survey, gathered follow-up information about the EMA week. The youth completed an interactive Space-Time Budget with the interviewer to collect detailed activity data on five days – the three most recent weekdays and two weekend days. The processed GPS data results in summarized stationary and travel periods during those five days, along with activity types and network partner presence. Concurrently, caregivers completed a self-administered survey about perceptions of social climate and safety in their neighborhood and at other routine locations.

    Waves 3 and 6: The second visit at the conclusion of the week of GPS tracking and EMA sampling was conducted at the Ohio State Center for Cognitive and Behavioral Brain Imaging. Participants completed an initial battery of questionnaires before scanning as well as had the option of providing a hair sample for cortisol or substance use measurement and blood sample for measurement of immune related markers. Participants also completed questionnaires after the scan.

    Participants 309 youths participated in the initial home interviews in Wave 3. 290 of these youths came to the imaging center and 271 adolescents were successfully scanned. Of these 271, 158 were in Wave 1 of the AHDC study, while 113 were part of the refresher sample and were thus new to Wave 3.

    For Wave 6, there were 144 individuals who came to the imaging center and 120 were successfully scanned. Of these, 110 were also scanned at wave 3, while 10 of these were individuals who were scanned for the first time.

    MRI Tasks In the first wave of imaging data (2018 to 2020; Wave 3 of the AHDC parent study), the task sequence was the same for all youths. The time of each run is listed after each and then in parentheses is the number of subjects after quality control checks (e.g. motion). 1. MPRAGE: 6:58 min (n = 249) 2. T2: 3:36 min 3. Resting State Scan (eyes open, rest): 5 min 4. Emotional Faces Task (Surprise, Angry, Fear, Neutral): 4:30 min x 2 runs (n = 214) 5. Cue Reactivity Task (Food, Marijuana, Flavored E-Cigs, Alcohol, and Outdoor images): 5:40 min x 2 runs (n = 215) 6. DTI: 6:55 min 7. Resting State Scan (eyes open, rest): 5 min 8. Field Map: 1:33 min 9. Monetary Incentive Delay Task: 5:23 min x 2 runs (n = 207) 10. Working Memory Task: 4:51 min x 2 runs (n = 183) These latter two tasks used the same Eprime script as used in the ABCD study.

    In the second imaging wave run between 2022 and 2024 (Wave 6 overall), there was a slight change to the task order for all participants in order to reduce the probability of youths falling asleep during the first resting state scan. The scan order for the second wave of imaging data was T1, T2, Emotional Faces Task, Cue Reactivity, Resting State 1, MID, Resting State 2, Field Map, Nback task.

    Caution This dataset is for research purposes only. The data have been anonymized, and users must not perform analyses aimed at re-identifying individual subjects.

    Background:
    The Millennium Cohort Study (MCS) is a large-scale, multi-purpose longitudinal dataset providing information about babies born at the beginning of the 21st century, their progress through life, and the families who are bringing them up, for the four countries of the United Kingdom. The original objectives of the first MCS survey, as laid down in the proposal to the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) in March 2000, were:

    • to chart the initial conditions of social, economic and health advantages and disadvantages facing children born at the start of the 21st century, capturing information that the research community of the future will require
    • to provide a basis for comparing patterns of development with the preceding cohorts (the National Child Development Study, held at the UK Data Archive under GN 33004, and the 1970 Birth Cohort Study, held under GN 33229)
    • to collect information on previously neglected topics, such as fathers' involvement in children's care and development
    • to focus on parents as the most immediate elements of the children's 'background', charting their experience as mothers and fathers of newborn babies in the year 2000, recording how they (and any other children in the family) adapted to the newcomer, and what their aspirations for her/his future may be
    • to emphasise intergenerational links including those back to the parents' own childhood
    • to investigate the wider social ecology of the family, including social networks, civic engagement and community facilities and services, splicing in geo-coded data when available
    Additional objectives subsequently included for MCS were:
    • to provide control cases for the national evaluation of Sure Start (a government programme intended to alleviate child poverty and social exclusion)
    • to provide samples of adequate size to analyse and compare the smaller countries of the United Kingdom, and include disadvantaged areas of England

    The first sweep (MCS1) interviewed both mothers and (where resident) fathers (or father-figures) of infants included in the sample when the babies were nine months old, and the second sweep (MCS2) was carried out with the same respondents when the children were three years of age. The third sweep (MCS3) was conducted in 2006, when the children were aged five years old, the fourth sweep (MCS4) in 2008, when they were seven years old, the fifth sweep (MCS5) in 2012-2013, when they were eleven years old, the sixth sweep (MCS6) in 2015, when they were fourteen years old, and the seventh sweep (MCS7) in 2018, when they were seventeen years old.

    End User Licence versions of MCS studies:
    The End User Licence (EUL) versions of MCS1, MCS2, MCS3, MCS4, MCS5, MCS6 and MCS7 are held under UK Data Archive SNs 4683, 5350, 5795, 6411, 7464, 8156 and 8682 respectively. The longitudinal family file is held under SN 8172.

    Some studies based on sub-samples of MCS have also been conducted, including a study of MCS respondent mothers who had received assisted fertility treatment, conducted in 2003 (see EUL SN 5559).     Release of Sweeps 1 to 4 to Long Format (Summer 2020)
    To support longitudinal research and make it easier to compare data from different time points, all data from across all sweeps is now in a consistent format. The update affects the data from sweeps 1 to 4 (from 9 months to 7 years), which are updated from the old/wide to a new/long format to match the format of data of sweeps 5 and 6 (age 11 and 14 sweeps). The old/wide formatted datasets contained one row per family with multiple variables for different respondents. The new/long formatted datasets contain one row per respondent (per parent or per cohort member) for each MCS family. Additional updates have been made to all sweeps to harmonise variable labels and enhance anonymisation.

    The MCS Linked Education Administrative Dataset (KS1), Scotland: Secure Access (SN 7414) includes a data file containing selected information from the Pupil Census, 2008, the School Meals Survey and attendance and absence records for the year 2008-2009, for those cohort members attending a school in Scotland at the time of MCS4 interview. Also included are anonymised Local Education Authorities (LEA) and anonymised School Numbers, to allow comparison of results across LEA and school. The data were obtained only for children whose parents/carers gave consent to data linkage, and who were successfully matched.

    This study only includes data for MCS cohort members attending schools in Scotland. Data for England and Wales are available under SNs 8481 and 7415 respectively.

    Description

    The Denver Youth Survey (DYS) is part of the larger "Program of Research on the Causes and Correlates of Delinquency" initiated by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention in 1986. The DYS is a longitudinal study of problem and successful behavior over the life course that focuses on delinquency, drug use, victimization, and mental health. The DYS is based on a probability sample of households in "high-risk" neighborhoods of Denver, Colorado. These neighborhoods were selected on the basis of their social ecology in terms of population and housing characteristics. Only socially disorganized neighborhoods with high official crime rates (top one-third) were included. The survey respondents include 1,528 children and youth who were 7, 9, 11, 13, or 15 years old in 1987, and one of their parents, who lived in one of the more than 20,000 randomly selected households. The survey respondents include 807 boys and 721 girls and include White (10 percent), Latino (45 percent), and African American (33 percent) youth, as well as 12 percent from other racial/ethnic backgrounds. The child and youth respondents, along with one caretaker, were interviewed annually from 1988 until 1992, and annually from 1995 until 1999. The age range covered by the study is from age 7 through age 26. The dataset contains 1,528 cases and 22,081 variables.

    Description

    description: This dataset is imported from the US Department of Commerce, National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and its "Data Explorer" site. The underlying data comes from the US Census 1. dataset: Specifies the month and year of the survey as a string, in "Mon YYYY" format. The CPS is a monthly survey, and NTIA periodically sponsors Supplements to that survey. 2. variable: Contains the standardized name of the variable being measured. NTIA identified the availability of similar data across Supplements, and assigned variable names to ease time-series comparisons. 3. description: Provides a concise description of the variable. 4. universe: Specifies the variable representing the universe of persons or households included in the variable's statistics. The specified variable is always included in the file. The only variables lacking universes are isPerson and isHouseholder, as they are themselves the broadest universes measured in the CPS. 5. A large number of *Prop, *PropSE, *Count, and *CountSE columns comprise the remainder of the columns. For each demographic being measured (see below), four statistics are produced, including the estimated proportion of the group for which the variable is true (*Prop), the standard error of that proportion (*PropSE), the estimated number of persons or households in that group for which the variable is true (*Count), and the standard error of that count (CountSE). DEMOGRAPHIC CATEGORIES 1. us: The usProp, usPropSE, usCount, and usCountSE columns contain statistics about all persons and households in the universe (which represents the population of the fifty states and the District and Columbia). For example, to see how the prevelance of Internet use by Americans has changed over time, look at the usProp column for each survey's internetUser variable. 2. age: The age category is divided into five ranges: ages 3-14, 15-24, 25-44, 45-64, and 65+. The CPS only includes data on Americans ages 3 and older. Also note that household reference persons must be at least 15 years old, so the age314 columns are blank for household-based variables. Those columns are also blank for person-based variables where the universe is "isAdult" (or a sub-universe of "isAdult"), as the CPS defines adults as persons ages 15 or older. Finally, note that some variables where children are technically in the univese will show zero values for the age314* columns. This occurs in cases where a variable simply cannot be true of a child (e.g. the workInternetUser variable, as the CPS presumes children under 15 are not eligible to work), but the topic of interest is relevant to children (e.g. locations of Internet use). 3. work: Employment status is divided into "Employed," "Unemployed," and "NILF" (Not in the Labor Force). These three categories reflect the official BLS definitions used in official labor force statistics. Note that employment status is only recorded in the CPS for individuals ages 15 and older. As a result, children are excluded from the universe when calculating statistics by work status, even if they are otherwise considered part of the universe for the variable of interest. 4. income: The income category represents annual family income, rather than just an individual person's income. It is divided into five ranges: below $25K, $25K-49,999, $50K-74,999, $75K-99,999, and $100K or more. Statistics by income group are only available in this file for Supplements beginning in 2010; prior to 2010, family income range is available in public use datasets, but is not directly comparable to newer datasets due to the 2010 introduction of the practice of allocating "don't know," "refused," and other responses that result in missing data. Prior to 2010, family income is unkown for approximately 20 percent of persons, while in 2010 the Census Bureau began imputing likely income ranges to replace missing data. 5. education: Educational attainment is divided into "No Diploma," "High School Grad," "Some College," and "College Grad." High school graduates are considered to include GED completers, and those with some college include community college attendees (and graduates) and those who have attended certain postsecondary vocational or technical schools--in other words, it signifies additional education beyond high school, but short of attaining a bachelor's degree or equivilent. Note that educational attainment is only recorded in the CPS for individuals ages 15 and older. As a result, children are excluded from the universe when calculating statistics by education, even if they are otherwise considered part of the universe for the variable of interest. 6. sex: "Male" and "Female" are the two groups in this category. The CPS does not currently provide response options for intersex individuals. 7. race: This category includes "White," "Black," "Hispanic," "Asian," "Am Indian," and "Other" groups. The CPS asks about Hispanic origin separately from racial identification; as a result, all persons identifying as Hispanic are in the Hispanic group, regardless of how else they identify. Furthermore, all non-Hispanic persons identifying with two or more races are tallied in the "Other" group (along with other less-prevelant responses). The Am Indian group includes both American Indians and Alaska Natives. 8. disability: Disability status is divided into "No" and "Yes" groups, indicating whether the person was identified as having a disability. Disabilities screened for in the CPS include hearing impairment, vision impairment (not sufficiently correctable by glasses), cognitive difficulties arising from physical, mental, or emotional conditions, serious difficulty walking or climbing stairs, difficulty dressing or bathing, and difficulties performing errands due to physical, mental, or emotional conditions. The Census Bureau began collecting data on disability status in June 2008; accordingly, this category is unavailable in Supplements prior to that date. Note that disability status is only recorded in the CPS for individuals ages 15 and older. As a result, children are excluded from the universe when calculating statistics by disability status, even if they are otherwise considered part of the universe for the variable of interest. 9. metro: Metropolitan status is divided into "No," "Yes," and "Unkown," reflecting information in the dataset about the household's location. A household located within a metropolitan statistical area is assigned to the Yes group, and those outside such areas are assigned to No. However, due to the risk of de-anonymization, the metropolitan area status of certain households is unidentified in public use datasets. In those cases, the Census Bureau has determined that revealing this geographic information poses a disclosure risk. Such households are tallied in the Unknown group. 10. scChldHome: 11.

    Background:
    The Millennium Cohort Study (MCS) is a large-scale, multi-purpose longitudinal dataset providing information about babies born at the beginning of the 21st century, their progress through life, and the families who are bringing them up, for the four countries of the United Kingdom. The original objectives of the first MCS survey, as laid down in the proposal to the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) in March 2000, were:

    • to chart the initial conditions of social, economic and health advantages and disadvantages facing children born at the start of the 21st century, capturing information that the research community of the future will require
    • to provide a basis for comparing patterns of development with the preceding cohorts (the National Child Development Study, held at the UK Data Archive under GN 33004, and the 1970 Birth Cohort Study, held under GN 33229)
    • to collect information on previously neglected topics, such as fathers' involvement in children's care and development
    • to focus on parents as the most immediate elements of the children's 'background', charting their experience as mothers and fathers of newborn babies in the year 2000, recording how they (and any other children in the family) adapted to the newcomer, and what their aspirations for her/his future may be
    • to emphasise intergenerational links including those back to the parents' own childhood
    • to investigate the wider social ecology of the family, including social networks, civic engagement and community facilities and services, splicing in geo-coded data when available
    Additional objectives subsequently included for MCS were:
    • to provide control cases for the national evaluation of Sure Start (a government programme intended to alleviate child poverty and social exclusion)
    • to provide samples of adequate size to analyse and compare the smaller countries of the United Kingdom, and include disadvantaged areas of England

    The first sweep (MCS1) interviewed both mothers and (where resident) fathers (or father-figures) of infants included in the sample when the babies were nine months old, and the second sweep (MCS2) was carried out with the same respondents when the children were three years of age. The third sweep (MCS3) was conducted in 2006, when the children were aged five years old, the fourth sweep (MCS4) in 2008, when they were seven years old, the fifth sweep (MCS5) in 2012-2013, when they were eleven years old, the sixth sweep (MCS6) in 2015, when they were fourteen years old, and the seventh sweep (MCS7) in 2018, when they were seventeen years old.

    End User Licence versions of MCS studies:
    The End User Licence (EUL) versions of MCS1, MCS2, MCS3, MCS4, MCS5, MCS6 and MCS7 are held under UK Data Archive SNs 4683, 5350, 5795, 6411, 7464, 8156 and 8682 respectively. The longitudinal family file is held under SN 8172.

    Sub-sample studies:

    SN 8785 - Millennium Cohort Study: Age 5, Sweep 3, 2006: Foundation Stage Profile and Teacher Survey
    The Foundation Stage Profile data were collected as part of the Age 5, Sweep 3 survey. The variables of the evaluation of child’s development (e.g. reading, writing) contain linked data to educational records (Foundation Stage Profile for England) and teacher survey that included similar questions to the Foundation Stage Profile (survey responses for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland).

    Thanks to the 3,015 residents for their participation, the third year's results are in on a survey the City of Minneapolis conducted to understand how Minneapolis residents use computers, mobile devices and the Internet. Access to computers and the Internet, along with the skills to use these tools is critical as technology becomes more and more a part of our daily lives and is integrated in our economic, educational, health, and workforce systems. The results will inform priorities for the City’s digital inclusion initiatives, and help engage businesses, neighborhood and community groups, public sector partners, and funders to more effectively address community technology and economic development needs. In addition, the survey provides data to measure changes in the community over time.

    The City of Minneapolis Information Technology Department contracted with National Research Center, Inc. (NRC) to conduct a survey of residents to inform the City’s efforts to overcome the digital equity gap between individuals and groups in their access to and use and knowledge of information and communication technologies.     The National Child Development Study (NCDS) is a continuing longitudinal study that seeks to follow the lives of all those living in Great Britain who were born in one particular week in 1958. The aim of the study is to improve understanding of the factors affecting human development over the whole lifespan.

    The NCDS has its origins in the Perinatal Mortality Survey (PMS) (the original PMS study is held at the UK Data Archive under SN 2137). This study was sponsored by the National Birthday Trust Fund and designed to examine the social and obstetric factors associated with stillbirth and death in early infancy among the 17,000 children born in England, Scotland and Wales in that one week. Selected data from the PMS form NCDS sweep 0, held alongside NCDS sweeps 1-3, under SN 5565.

    Survey and Biomeasures Data (GN 33004):

    To date there have been nine attempts to trace all members of the birth cohort in order to monitor their physical, educational and social development. The first three sweeps were carried out by the National Children's Bureau, in 1965, when respondents were aged 7, in 1969, aged 11, and in 1974, aged 16 (these sweeps form NCDS1-3, held together with NCDS0 under SN 5565). The fourth sweep, also carried out by the National Children's Bureau, was conducted in 1981, when respondents were aged 23 (held under SN 5566). In 1985 the NCDS moved to the Social Statistics Research Unit (SSRU) - now known as the Centre for Longitudinal Studies (CLS). The fifth sweep was carried out in 1991, when respondents were aged 33 (held under SN 5567). For the sixth sweep, conducted in 1999-2000, when respondents were aged 42 (NCDS6, held under SN 5578), fieldwork was combined with the 1999-2000 wave of the 1970 Birth Cohort Study (BCS70), which was also conducted by CLS (and held under GN 33229). The seventh sweep was conducted in 2004-2005 when the respondents were aged 46 (held under SN 5579), the eighth sweep was conducted in 2008-2009 when respondents were aged 50 (held under SN 6137) and the ninth sweep was conducted in 2013 when respondents were aged 55 (held under SN 7669).

    Four separate datasets covering responses to NCDS over all sweeps are available. National Child Development Deaths Dataset: Special Licence Access (SN 7717) covers deaths; National Child Development Study Response and Outcomes Dataset (SN 5560) covers all other responses and outcomes; National Child Development Study: Partnership Histories (SN 6940) includes data on live-in relationships; and National Child Development Study: Activity Histories (SN 6942) covers work and non-work activities. Users are advised to order these studies alongside the other waves of NCDS.

    From 2002-2004, a Biomedical Survey was completed and is available under End User Licence (EUL) (SN 8731) and Special Licence (SL) (SN 5594). Proteomics analyses of blood samples are available under SL SN 9254.

    The National Child Development Study: Biomedical Survey 2002-2004 was funded under the Medical Research Council 'Health of the Public' initiative, and was carried out in 2002-2004 in collaboration with the Institute of Child Health, St George's Hospital Medical School, and NatCen. The survey was designed to obtain objective measures of ill-health and biomedical risk factors in order to address a wide range of specific hypotheses relating to anthropometry: cardiovascular, respiratory and allergic diseases; visual and hearing impairment; and mental ill-health.

    The majority of the biomedical data (1,064 variables) are now available under EUL (SN 8731), with some data considered sensitive still available under Special Licence (SN 5594). This decision was the result of the CLS's disclosure assessment of each variable and the broad aim to make as much data available with the lowest possible barriers. Information about the medication taken by the cohort members of the study is also available under EUL for the first time. These data were collected in 2002-2004, but they were never released via the UKDS.

    The Special Licence dataset contains 122 variables including new data on child adversity not previously released, as well as a number of original variables that were previously available under Special Licence due to their sensitive nature, such as Clinical Interview Schedule-Revised (CIS-R) specific questions on mental health and questions which contain categories with small frequencies related to personal details such as skin colour, pregnancy, a surgical operation, specific height and unusual high number of children.

    For the second edition (December 2020), the data and documentation have been revised. Previously unreleased variables on child adversity have been added and some variables removed as they are now available under EUL. Users are advised to download the EUL version (SN 8731) before deciding to apply for the Special Licence version.

    Plot summary

    Set at a bucolic Midwestern college known only as The-College-on-the-Hill, White Noise follows a year in the life of Jack Gladney, a professor who has made his name by pioneering the field of Hitler Studies (though he hasn't taken German language lessons until this year). He has been married five times to four women and has a brood of children and stepchildren (Heinrich, Denise, Steffie, Wilder) with his current wife, Babette. Jack and Babette are both extremely afraid of death; they frequently wonder which of them will be the first to die. The first part of White Noise, called "Waves and Radiation," is a chronicle of contemporary family life combined with academic satire. There is little plot development in this section, which mainly serves as an introduction to the characters and themes that will dominate the rest of the book. For instance, the mysterious deaths of men in Mylex suits and the ashen, shaken survivors of a plane that went into free fall anticipate the catastrophe of the book's second part. Outside of the family, another important character introduced here is Murray, another college professor, who frequently discusses his theories, which relate to the rest of the book. In the second part, "The Airborne Toxic Event," a chemical spill from a rail car releases a black noxious cloud over Jack's home region, prompting an evacuation. Frightened by his exposure to the toxin, Gladney is forced to confront his mortality. An organization called SIMUVAC (short for "simulated evacuation") is also introduced in Part Two, an indication of simulations replacing reality. In part three of the book, "Dylarama," Gladney discovers that Babette has been cheating on him in order to gain access to a fictional drug called Dylar, an experimental treatment for the fear of death. The novel becomes a meditation on modern society's fear of death and its obsession with chemical cures as Gladney seeks to obtain his own black market supply of Dylar. However, Dylar does not work for Babette, and it has many possible side effects, including losing the ability to "distinguish words from things, so that if someone said 'speeding bullet,' I would fall to the floor to take cover." Jack continues to obsess over death. During a discussion about mortality, Murray hypothesizes that killing someone could perhaps alleviate the fear. Jack decides to test Murray's theory by tracking down and killing the man who had given Dylar to Babette in exchange for sex. After a black comedy scene of Jack driving and rehearsing, in his head, several ways in which their encounter might proceed, he successfully locates and shoots Willie Mink, who is delirious from his own Dylar addiction. He then puts the gun in Willie's hand to make the murder look like a suicide, but Willie then shoots Jack in the arm. Suddenly realizing the needless loss of life, Jack carries Willie to a hospital run by German nuns who do not believe in God or an afterlife. Having saved Willie, Jack returns home to watch his children sleep. The final chapter describes Wilder, Jack's youngest child, riding a tricycle across the highway and miraculously surviving.

    Background:
    The Millennium Cohort Study (MCS) is a large-scale, multi-purpose longitudinal dataset providing information about babies born at the beginning of the 21st century, their progress through life, and the families who are bringing them up, for the four countries of the United Kingdom. The original objectives of the first MCS survey, as laid down in the proposal to the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) in March 2000, were:

    • to chart the initial conditions of social, economic and health advantages and disadvantages facing children born at the start of the 21st century, capturing information that the research community of the future will require
    • to provide a basis for comparing patterns of development with the preceding cohorts (the National Child Development Study, held at the UK Data Archive under GN 33004, and the 1970 Birth Cohort Study, held under GN 33229)
    • to collect information on previously neglected topics, such as fathers' involvement in children's care and development
    • to focus on parents as the most immediate elements of the children's 'background', charting their experience as mothers and fathers of newborn babies in the year 2000, recording how they (and any other children in the family) adapted to the newcomer, and what their aspirations for her/his future may be
    • to emphasise intergenerational links including those back to the parents' own childhood
    • to investigate the wider social ecology of the family, including social networks, civic engagement and community facilities and services, splicing in geo-coded data when available
    Additional objectives subsequently included for MCS were:
    • to provide control cases for the national evaluation of Sure Start (a government programme intended to alleviate child poverty and social exclusion)

    The first sweep (MCS1) interviewed both mothers and (where resident) fathers (or father-figures) of infants included in the sample when the babies were nine months old, and the second sweep (MCS2) was carried out with the same respondents when the children were three years of age. The third sweep (MCS3) was conducted in 2006, when the children were aged five years old, the fourth sweep (MCS4) in 2008, when they were seven years old, the fifth sweep (MCS5) in 2012-2013, when they were eleven years old, the sixth sweep (MCS6) in 2015, when they were fourteen years old, and the seventh sweep (MCS7) in 2018, when they were seventeen years old.

    End User Licence versions of MCS studies:
    The End User Licence (EUL) versions of MCS1, MCS2, MCS3, MCS4, MCS5, MCS6 and MCS7 are held under UK Data Archive SNs 4683, 5350, 5795, 6411, 7464, 8156 and 8682 respectively. The longitudinal family file is held under SN 8172.

    Sub-sample studies:
    Some studies based on sub-samples of MCS have also been conducted, including a study of MCS respondent mothers who had received assisted fertility treatment, conducted in 2003 (see EUL SN 5559). Also, birth registration and maternity hospital episodes for the MCS respondents are held as a separate dataset (see EUL SN 5614).

    Release of Sweeps 1 to 4 to Long Format (Summer 2020)
    To support longitudinal research and make it easier to compare data from different time points, all data from across all sweeps is now in a consistent format. The update affects the data from sweeps 1 to 4 (from 9 months to 7 years), which are updated from the old/wide to a new/long format to match the format of data of sweeps 5 and 6 (age 11 and 14 sweeps). The old/wide formatted datasets contained one row per family with multiple variables for different respondents. The new/long formatted datasets contain one row per respondent (per parent or per cohort member) for each MCS family. Additional updates have been made to all sweeps to harmonise variable labels and enhance anonymisation.

    The Millennium Cohort Study: Linked Health Administrative Data (Scottish Medical Records), Inpatient and Day Care Attendance, 2000-2015: Secure Access includes data files from the NHS Digital Hospital Episode Statistics database for those cohort members who provided consent to health data linkage in the Age 50 sweep, and had ever lived in Scotland. The Scottish Medical Records database contains information about all hospital admissions in Scotland. This study concerns the Scottish Birth Records.

    Description

    This dataset combines the KwaZulu-Natal portion of the first South African national household survey, the Project for Statistics on Living Standards and Development (PSLSD), which was undertaken in the last half of 1993 under the leadership of the Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit at the University of Cape Town with a re-survey of the same households from March to June 1998. Combining these two surveys yields a panel dataset in which the same individuals and households have been interviewed at two points in time. In 1993, the KwaZulu-Natal portion of the PSLSD sample was representative at the provincial level, conditional on the accuracy of the 1991 census and other information used for the sampling frame, and contained 1519 households of all races. It was decided not to re-survey the small number of white (112) and colored (53) households in 1998. So the 1998 sample includes only African and Indian households.The 1993 survey was an integrated household survey similar in design to a World Bank Living Standards Measurement Survey. The main component was a comprehensive household survey that collected a broad array of information on the socio-economic condition of households and included sections on household demographics, household environment, education, food and non-food expenditures, remittances, employment and income, agricultural activities, health, and anthropometry. The 1998 household questionnaire largely followed the 1993 version with a few important changes: (1) greater focus on individual ownership of assets and control over their use; (2) expanded emphasis on those individuals not living in the household but economically linked to it; (3) four new sections on economic shocks, social capital, assets brought to marriage, and household decisionmaking. Community surveys were also completed in both years; the 1998 community questionnaire included new sections on economic shocks and social capital in addition to sections on local economic activity, infrastructure, and prices. This dataset, along with the Bangladesh Commercial Vegetable and Fish Polyculture Production dataset and the Strengthening and Evaluation of the Hogares Comunitarios Program in Guatemala City dataset, were collected with the objective of examining to what extent intrahousehold allocation processes would affect the outcome of development policies, with particular emphasis on gender as a determinant of intrahousehold allocation. Because the data were designed to make some analyses comparable across countries, several modules are similar for all three datasets. The common modules include: information on assets at marriage of husband and wife, family background information, individual education and anthropometric data. Other modules are different because each country study has a different emphasis.

    Background:
    The Millennium Cohort Study (MCS) is a large-scale, multi-purpose longitudinal dataset providing information about babies born at the beginning of the 21st century, their progress through life, and the families who are bringing them up, for the four countries of the United Kingdom. The original objectives of the first MCS survey, as laid down in the proposal to the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) in March 2000, were:

    • to chart the initial conditions of social, economic and health advantages and disadvantages facing children born at the start of the 21st century, capturing information that the research community of the future will require
    • to provide a basis for comparing patterns of development with the preceding cohorts (the National Child Development Study, held at the UK Data Archive under GN 33004, and the 1970 Birth Cohort Study, held under GN 33229)
    • to collect information on previously neglected topics, such as fathers' involvement in children's care and development
    • to focus on parents as the most immediate elements of the children's 'background', charting their experience as mothers and fathers of newborn babies in the year 2000, recording how they (and any other children in the family) adapted to the newcomer, and what their aspirations for her/his future may be
    • to emphasise intergenerational links including those back to the parents' own childhood
    • to investigate the wider social ecology of the family, including social networks, civic engagement and community facilities and services, splicing in geo-coded data when available
    Additional objectives subsequently included for MCS were:
    • to provide control cases for the national evaluation of Sure Start (a government programme intended to alleviate child poverty and social exclusion)
    • to provide samples of adequate size to analyse and compare the smaller countries of the United Kingdom, and include disadvantaged areas of England

    The first sweep (MCS1) interviewed both mothers and (where resident) fathers (or father-figures) of infants included in the sample when the babies were nine months old, and the second sweep (MCS2) was carried out with the same respondents when the children were three years of age. The third sweep (MCS3) was conducted in 2006, when the children were aged five years old, the fourth sweep (MCS4) in 2008, when they were seven years old, the fifth sweep (MCS5) in 2012-2013, when they were eleven years old, the sixth sweep (MCS6) in 2015, when they were fourteen years old, and the seventh sweep (MCS7) in 2018, when they were seventeen years old.

    End User Licence versions of MCS studies:
    The End User Licence (EUL) versions of MCS1, MCS2, MCS3, MCS4, MCS5, MCS6 and MCS7 are held under UK Data Archive SNs 4683, 5350, 5795, 6411, 7464, 8156 and 8682 respectively. The longitudinal family file is held under SN 8172.

    Sub-sample studies:
    Some studies based on sub-samples of MCS have also been conducted, including a study of MCS respondent mothers who had received assisted fertility treatment, conducted in 2003 (see EUL SN 5559). Also, birth registration and maternity hospital episodes for the MCS respondents are held as a separate dataset (see EUL SN 5614).

    Release of Sweeps 1 to 4 to Long Format (Summer 2020)
    To support longitudinal research and make it easier to compare data from different time points, all data from across all sweeps is now in a consistent format. The update affects the data from sweeps 1 to 4 (from 9 months to 7 years), which are updated from the old/wide to a new/long format to match the format of data of sweeps 5 and 6 (age 11 and 14 sweeps). The old/wide formatted datasets contained one row per family with multiple variables for different respondents. The new/long formatted datasets contain one row per respondent (per parent or per cohort member) for each MCS family. Additional updates have been made to all sweeps to harmonise variable labels and enhance anonymisation.

    The Millennium Cohort Study: NHS Patient Episode Database for Wales (PEDW), Linked Administrative Datasets: ICD-10 Codes in Continuous Spells, 2001-2012: Secure Access includes inpatient and day case data collected by NHS Wales, when cohort members were aged between 0-11 years old. This summary dataset contains derived variables for the number of hospitalisations in each age year, and the ICD-10 (10th revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems) chapter relevant to the diagnosis.

    This is a publication on maternity activity in English NHS hospitals. This report examines data relating to delivery and birth episodes in 2022-23, and the booking appointments for these deliveries. This annual publication covers the financial year ending March 2023. Data is included from both the Hospital Episodes Statistics (HES) data warehouse and the Maternity Services Data Set (MSDS). HES contains records of all admissions, appointments and attendances for patients admitted to NHS hospitals in England. The HES data used in this publication are called 'delivery episodes'. The MSDS collects records of each stage of the maternity service care pathway in NHS-funded maternity services, and includes information not recorded in HES. The MSDS is a maturing, national-level dataset. In April 2019 the MSDS transitioned to a new version of the dataset. This version, MSDS v2.0, is an update that introduced a new structure and content - including clinical terminology, in order to meet current clinical practice and incorporate new requirements. It is designed to meet requirements that resulted from the National Maternity Review, which led to the publication of the Better Births report in February 2016. This is the fourth publication of data from MSDS v2.0 and data from 2019-20 onwards is not directly comparable to data from previous years. This publication shows the number of HES delivery episodes during the period, with a number of breakdowns including by method of onset of labour, delivery method and place of delivery. It also shows the number of MSDS deliveries recorded during the period, with breakdowns including the baby's first feed type, birthweight, place of birth, and breastfeeding activity; and the mothers' ethnicity and age at booking. There is also data available in a separate file on breastfeeding at 6 to 8 weeks. The count of Total Babies includes both live and still births, and previous changes to how Total Babies and Total Deliveries were calculated means that comparisons between 2019-20 MSDS data and later years should be made with care. Information on how all measures are constructed can be found in the HES Metadata and MSDS Metadata files provided below. In this publication we have also included an interactive Power BI dashboard to enable users to explore key NHS Maternity Statistics measures. The purpose of this publication is to inform and support strategic and policy-led processes for the benefit of patient care. This report will also be of interest to researchers, journalists and members of the public interested in NHS hospital activity in England.
