Users like to find funny or entertaining content and enjoy sharing photos and videos with friends, but mainly use social media to stay in touch with current events friends. We used TikTok’s built-in account analytics to download and record video and account metrics for the period between 10/8/2021 and 2/6/2022. We collected the following summary data for each individual video: video views, likes, comments, shares, total cumulative play time, average duration the video was watched, percentage of viewers who watched the full video, unique reached audience, and the percentage of video views by section (For You, personal profile, Following, hashtags).
We evaluated the “success” of videos based on reach and engagement metrics, as well as viewer retention (how long a video is watched). We used metrics of reach (number of unique users the video was seen by) and engagement (likes, comments, and shares) to calculate the engagement rate of each video. The engagement rate is calculated as the engagement parameter as a percentage of total reach (e.g., Likes / Audience Reached *100).

The goal of the study is to explore how social media users think in moral and ethical terms about their online participation when they talk about TikTok. Relatively little research has focused on moral and ethical reasoning in the use of social media and no study to date has provided the opportunity to voice a user’s own experience with moral issues as they perceive them through their use of TikTok. A thematic analysis of 40 in-depth interviews is applied to explore how young users define the ‘good’ and what significance they attribute to moral principles.

According to a March 2024 survey conducted in the United States, 32 percent of adults reported feeling that social media had neither a positive nor negative effect on their own mental health. Only seven percent of social media users said that online platforms had a very positive effect on their mental health, while 12 percent of users said it had a very negative impact. A 2023 survey of individuals between 11 and 59 years old in the United States found that over 73 percent of TikTok users agreed that the platform was addictive. Furthermore, nearly 27 percent of those surveyed reported experiencing negative psychological effects related to TikTok use. Users belonging to Generation Z were the most likely to say that TikTok is addictive, yet millennials felt the negative effects of using the app more so than Gen Z. In the U.S., it is also not uncommon for social media users to take breaks from using online platforms, and as of March 2024, over a third of adults in the country had done so. Following mental health-related content Although online users may be aware of the negative and addictive aspects of social media, it is also a useful tool for finding supportive content. In a global survey conducted in 2023, 32 percent of social media users followed therapists and mental health professionals on social media. Overall, 24 percent of respondents said that they followed people on social media if they had the same condition as they did. Between January 2020 and March 2023, British actress and model Cara Delevingne was the celebrity mental health activist with the highest growth in searches tying her name to the topic.
