    Description

Ireland, Italy, and Germany had some of the highest household electricity prices worldwide, as of March 2025. At the time, Irish households were charged around 0.45 U.S. dollars per kilowatt-hour, while in Italy, the price stood at 0.43 U.S. dollars per kilowatt-hour. By comparison, in Russia, residents paid almost 10 times less. What is behind electricity prices? Electricity prices vary widely across the world and sometimes even within a country itself, depending on factors like infrastructure, geography, and politically determined taxes and levies. For example, in Denmark, Belgium, and Sweden, taxes constitute a significant portion of residential end-user electricity prices. Reliance on fossil fuel imports Meanwhile, thanks to their great crude oil and natural gas production output, countries like Iran, Qatar, and Russia enjoy some of the cheapest electricity prices in the world. Here, the average household pays less than 0.1 U.S. dollars per kilowatt-hour. In contrast, countries heavily reliant on fossil fuel imports for electricity generation are more vulnerable to market price fluctuations.

    Description

    Abstract

Energy price inflation is an important metric to inform economic policy but traditional sources of consumer prices are often produced with delay during crises and only at an aggregate level. This may poorly reflect the actual price trends in rural or poverty-stricken areas, where large populations reside in fragile situations. This data set includes energy price estimates and is intended to help gain insight in price developments beyond what can be formally measured by traditional methods. The estimates are generated using a machine-learning approach that imputes ongoing subnational price surveys, often with accuracy similar to direct measurement of prices. The data set provides new opportunities to investigate local price dynamics in areas where populations are sensitive to localized price shocks and where traditional data are not available.

    Description

Electricity prices in Europe are expected to remain volatile through 2025, with Italy projected to have some of the highest rates among major European economies. This trend reflects the ongoing challenges in the energy sector, including the transition to renewable sources and the impact of geopolitical events on supply chains. Despite efforts to stabilize the market, prices in countries like Italy are forecast to reach ****** euros per megawatt hour by February 2025, indicating persistent pressure on consumers and businesses alike. Natural gas futures shaping electricity costs The electricity market's future trajectory is closely tied to natural gas prices, a key component in power generation. Dutch TTF gas futures, a benchmark for European natural gas prices, are projected to be ***** euros per megawatt hour in July 2025. The reduced output from the Groningen gas field and increased reliance on imports further complicate the pricing landscape, potentially contributing to higher electricity costs in countries like Italy. Regional disparities and global market influences While European electricity prices remain high, significant regional differences persist. For instance, natural gas prices in the United States are expected to be roughly one-third of those in Europe by March 2025, at **** U.S. dollars per million British thermal units. This stark contrast highlights the impact of domestic production capabilities on global natural gas prices. Europe's greater reliance on imports, particularly in the aftermath of geopolitical tensions and the shift away from Russian gas, continues to keep prices elevated compared to more self-sufficient markets. As a result, countries like Italy may face sustained pressure on electricity prices due to their position within the broader European energy market.

    Description

This dataset contains average hourly, daily and monthly wholesale day-ahead electricity prices for European countries.

Hourly data is provided as a .zip file to reduce download size. This folder includes a compiled file for all countries, as well as individual files per country. The compiled dataset is larger than the Excel row limit, so will need to be extracted with some other software (e.g. Python, R, Power Query etc).

Note that these are the prices generators receive for selling electricity on the spot market. They are not the same as the prices paid by electricity consumers, which can also include taxes, levies, network charges, subsidies, and supplier profits. They also do not account for hedging. Description

This dataset contains the GIS data used in the report, "Global Photovoltaic Power Potential by Country" generated by Solargis (https://solargis.com) with funding provided by the Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP). The study summarizes global solar resource and PV power potential on a country and regional basis. Analysis is based on Solargis's high-resolution datasets, and GIS mask layers which are downloadable via the 'resources' tab. A country comparison spreadsheet is also provided as an additional download, which provides indicators of PV power potential for all countries as described in the study. The study provides: • Ranking and comparison of countries and regions according to their PV potential; • Approximate levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) relevant to current PV projects; • Cross-correlation with the socio-economic indicators relevant to PV development. Description

Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner. The International Energy Agency (IEA) datasets published by the Energy Statistics Division (ESD) contain annual, quarterly and monthly time series data from 1960 onwards on energy production, trade, stocks, transformation, consumption, prices and taxes as well as on greenhouse gas emissions for the OECD Member countries and non-OECD countries world-wide. In OECD Member countries the data is collected by official bodies (most often the national statistics office in each country) from firms, government agencies and industry organisations and are then reported to the IEA using questionnaires to ensure international comparability. In non-OECD countries the data is collected directly from government and industry contacts and from national publications. The International Energy Agency (IEA) Energy Prices and Taxes database contains a major international compilation of energy prices at all market levels: import prices, industry prices and consumer prices. The statistics cover import costs and export prices of main petroleum products, natural gas and coal in Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. End-user prices and taxes for selected petroleum, gas and coal products as well as for electricity are provided for industry, electricity generation and households for OECD countries and a selection of non-OECD countries. Full notes on sources and methods and a description of price mechanisms in each country are included. Time series availability varies with each data series. In general, end-user prices and taxes start in 1978, import costs in 1980 and spot prices in 1982. This database is updated by the IEA in January, April, July and October of each year. These data were first provided by the UK Data Service in June 2005 and is updated quarterly.

    Description

Cabo Verde recorded the highest electricity price for households in Africa. As of June 2024, one kilowatt-hour costs around **** U.S. dollars in the country. Kenya and Sierra Leone followed, with households paying **** and **** U.S. dollars per kilowatt-hour, respectively. Mail, Burkina Faso, and Gabon also recorded relatively higher prices for electricity on the continent. On the other hand, Egypt, Zambia, Angola, and Libya registered the lowest prices for electric energy in Africa. Countries usually retain high prices for household and business electricity In Africa, countries with high electricity prices for households also tend to have higher prices for businesses. For instance, Cabo Verde, Burkina Faso, and Kenya’s energy prices for companies placed them among the most expensive four countries on the continent. As of late 2023, the electricity prices stood at around ***, ***, and **** U.S. dollars per kilowatt-hour, respectively. Electricity access and reliability vary across the continent A significant share of Africans still live with no access to electricity. Although almost all of North Africa's population had access to electricity, the other regions had lower electricity access in 2021. Western, Southern, and Eastern Africa had just over ** percent of their citizens living in electrified areas, while in Central Africa it stood at around ** percent. Nevertheless, according to a survey, two Eastern African countries ranked highest with the most reliable electricity supply on the continent. Between 2021 and 2023, some ** percent of Mauritians and ** percent of Seychellois reported having a supply that worked most or all the time.
