    Description

Companies importing and exporting electricity hold regulatory authorization from the CER and are required to report their export/import activities each month. Generated electricity not consumed domestically is exported. Electricity trade with United States is affected by prices, weather, power-line infrastructure and regional supply and demand. All these cause trade to vary from year to year. Canada also imports some electricity from the United States. The integrated Canada-US power grid allows for bi-directional flows to help meet fluctuating regional supply and demand. This dataset provides historical import and export volumes, values, and prices (by year and month) broken out by source and destination.

    Description

Canada has abundant resources of crude oil, with an estimated remaining ultimate potential of 52.3 106m³ (329 billion barrels) as of December 2017. Of this, oil sands account for 92 per cent. There are two major producing areas in Canada, the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, which includes Alberta, Saskatchewan and parts of British Columbia and Manitoba, and offshore eastern Canada. Oil is also produced in modest volumes in Ontario and the Northwest Territories. Although Canada was the 4th largest producer in the world in 2018, it produces only about five per cent of total daily production, so it does not have a major influence on the world oil prices. In 2018, 96 per cent of Canadian crude exports went to the U.S. The Canada Energy Regulator regulates the export of crude oil. Holders of export authorizations report monthly statistics on export activities. This dataset provides historical export volumes of crude oil (by year and month), and by either type of oil or by destination of export.

    Description

Canada’s Energy Future 2023: Energy Supply and Demand Projections to 2050 (EF2023) is the latest long-term energy outlook from the Canada Energy Regulator (CER). The Canada’s Energy Future series explores how possible energy futures might unfold for Canadians over the long term. We use economic and energy models to explore how supply and demand for energy could evolve. EF2023 is the CER’s first long-term outlook that models scenarios where Canada reaches net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. To model net-zero we begin with the end goal in mind: net-zero GHG emissions in 2050, and use our models to identify pathways to that point. This is a different approach compared to past versions of the report where we ran our models without restrictions, giving us insights into what a given premise meant for the future. EF2023 contains three scenarios. Two of these scenarios explore pathways where Canada achieves net-zero emissions by 2050. In the Global Net-zero Scenario, we assume Canada achieves net-zero emissions by 2050. We also assume the rest of the world reduces emissions enough to limit global warming to 1.5 Celsius (°C). In the Canada Net-zero Scenario, Canada also achieves net-zero emissions by 2050 but the rest of the world moves more slowly to reduce GHG emissions. The third scenario, the Current Measures Scenario, assumes limited action to reduce GHG emissions beyond measures in place today. In this scenario, we do not require our modeling results achieve net-zero GHG emissions in Canada by 2050. We also assume limited future global climate action.
