Graph and download economic data for Global price of Iron Ore (PIORECRUSDM) from Jan 1990 to Jun 2025 about ore, iron, World, and price.
In May 2024, iron ore was valued at approximately *** U.S. dollars per dry metric ton unit (dmtu), as compared to *** U.S. dollars per dmtu in the same month of the previous year. Iron ore prices and production Iron ore refers to the minerals and rocks from which metallic iron is economically viable to extract. Pig iron, which is one of the raw materials used in steel production, is derived from iron ore. The price of iron ore has fluctuated a great deal over the last twenty years. In 2003, one dmtu of iron ore cost ** U.S. dollars, and increased to a high of *** U.S. dollars per dmtu in 2011. The price saw dramatic drops in the past decade, from ****** U.S. dollars per dry metric ton unit in March 2013 to ***** U.S. dollars per dmtu in December 2015. Since then, the price has increased gradually to ****** U.S. dollars per dmtu as of July 2021, before dropping sharply in August 2021. Iron ore producers Overall, the global production of iron ore did not decrease when the prices dropped. In fact, an increase in production among several of the world's largest iron ore producing countries was observed in the past five years. Australia produced *** million metric tons of iron ore in 2023. China is also among the world's largest iron ore producers, though its production is calculated differently than in other countries. Based primarily on the production of raw ore rather than usable ore, China produced an estimated *** million metric tons in 2023.

Given that metals, minerals and energy resources extracted through mining are fundamental to human society, it follows that accurate data describing mine production are equally important. Although there are often national statistical sources, this typically includes data for metals (e.g., gold), minerals (e.g., iron ore) or energy resources (e.g., coal). No such study has ever compiled a national mine production data set which includes basic mining data such as ore processed, grades, extracted products (e.g., metals, concentrates, saleable ore) and waste rock. These data are crucial for geological assessments of mineable resources, environmental impacts, material flows (including losses during mining, smelting-refining, use and disposal or recycling) as well as facilitating more quantitative assessments of critical mineral potential (including possible extraction from tailings and/or waste rock left by mining). This data set achieves these needs for Australia, providing a world-first and comprehensive review of a national mining industry and an exemplar of what can be achieved for other countries with mining industry sectors.

The Geochemical Database for Iron Oxide-Copper-Cobalt-Gold-Rare Earth Element Deposits of Southeast Missouri (IOCG-REE_GX) contains new geochemical data compilations for samples from IOCG-REE type deposits in which each rock sample has one "best value" determination for each analyzed species, greatly improving speed and efficiency of use. IOCG-REE_GX was created and designed to compile whole-rock and trace element data from southeast Missouri in order to facilitate petrologic studies, mineral resource assessments, and the definition and statistics of geochemical baseline values. This relational database serves as a data archive in support of present and future geologic and geochemical studies of IOCG-REE type deposits, and contains data tables in two different formats describing historical and new quantitative and qualitative geochemical analyses. The analytical results were determined by 24 laboratory analytical methods on 457 rock samples collected during two phases from outcrop and drill core sites from throughout the entire St. Francois Mountains terrane made by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). In the first phase, the USGS collected and analyzed 315 samples from 1989 to 1995. During the second phase from 2013-2015, 119 samples were collected and analyzed, and 23 samples from the first phase were reanalyzed using analytical methods of higher precision. The data presents the most precise analytical approach to report the best value for each element. In order to facilitate examination of the geochemistry of the broad range of samples reported (i.e., regional samples, ore zone, or ore deposit alteration-related), a short sample description is given and each sample is coded (Jcode) according to the type of rock suites defined by Kisvarsanyi (1981), whether the sample was collected as a non-ore deposit-related representative of a given rock suite or as a deposit-related sample (Kcode, and; if the sample was related to a specific ore deposit the zone within the given deposit was included (Lcode. These coded data provide a robust tool for evaluating the regional geologic setting of the host terrane as well as assessing the character of hydrothermal alteration related to many of the contained mineral deposits. Data from the first phase are currently maintained in the USGS National Geochemical Database (NGDB), and data from the second phase will soon be added. The data of the IOCG-REE_GX were checked for accuracy regarding sample location, sample media type, and analytical methods used.
