The Current Employment Statistics (CES) program is a Federal-State cooperative effort in which monthly surveys are conducted to provide estimates of employment, hours, and earnings based on payroll records of business establishments. The CES survey is based on approximately 119,000 businesses and government agencies representing approximately 629,000 individual worksites throughout the United States.

CES data reflect the number of nonfarm, payroll jobs. It includes the total number of persons on establishment payrolls, employed full- or part-time, who received pay (whether they worked or not) for any part of the pay period that includes the 12th day of the month. Temporary and intermittent employees are included, as are any employees who are on paid sick leave or on paid holiday. Persons on the payroll of more than one establishment are counted in each establishment. CES data excludes proprietors, self-employed, unpaid family or volunteer workers, farm workers, and household workers. Government employment covers only civilian employees; it excludes uniformed members of the armed services.

Employment by Industry reports several labor statistics related to employment and wage. Domain Frequency Annual Full Description Employment by Industry reports the total Number of Employers, the Annual Average Employment, and the Annual Average Wage by industry at the town, county, and state level. Industries included in this dataset vary from location to location. In as many locations as possible, five specific industry segments are consistently present (Construction, Manufacturing, Retail Trade, All Industries, Total Government) as well as the largest 3 out of the remaining segments for that location, ranked by Annual Average Employment. Not every location has data for every segment, and some may not have data for the five consistently reported segments. This data is from the Connecticut Department of Labor Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW). The program produces a comprehensive tabulation of employment and wage information for workers covered by Connecticut Unemployment Insurance (UI) laws and Federal workers covered by the Unemployment Compensation for Federal Employees (UCFE) program.

This is a dataset that tracks relevant population statistics and employment rates per US state since 1976.

All data are official figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics that have been compiled and structured by myself. Besides the 50 US states, the unemployment data of three other areas are also being tracked in order to increase the analytical potential of the dataset: the District of Columbia, the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Glendale metropolitan division, and New York City.

Why did I create this dataset? Employment continues to be a significant issue in America today and contributes to other predicaments such as the homelessness crisis. By uploading time-series data regarding American unemployment over the past four decades, I hope that the community is able to determine the various statistical trends offered. In my personal opinion, achieving a quantitative yet objective viewpoint of a subject such as unemployment is crucial to understanding the issues at hand.

Data Sources

The primary data source used was the Bureau of Labor Statistics's official website, which publishes employment data pertaining to America. Considering the meticulous documentation of federal statistics by such a accredited government agency, no other authority is more equipped to provide insight on US unemployment.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics's State Employment and Unemployment Technical Note - The Bureau of Labor Statistics released a detailed overview of their unemployment data, the methodology behind their data, and the proper definitions and terminologies for the variables tracked. The guide mainly provided essential contextual knowledge needed to create a meaningful dataset.

This is monthly US unemployment rate data from January 2017 to November 2022. The datasets were curated from the Federal Reserve Economic Data that can be found here.

Definition of Unemployment Rate :

"The unemployment rate represents the number of unemployed as a percentage of the labour force. Labour force data are restricted to people 16 years of age and older, who currently reside in 1 of the 50 states or the District of Columbia, who do not reside in institutions (e.g., penal and mental facilities, homes for the aged), and who are not on active duty in the Armed Forces." The Green Goods and Services (GGS) program provides national and State estimates of GGS employment levels and rates by North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS) industry code and ownership. GGS employment is employment associated with producing green goods or providing green services. GGS employment level and rate estimates are also published at the State level for private, local government, State government, and federal government ownerships at the NAICS industry sector level. The Uniform National Threshold Entered Employment Rate (UNTEER) is a national threshold Veterans’ Entered Employment Rate (VEER) for veterans and other eligible persons served by the Jobs for Veterans State Grants (JVSG) program and the Wagner-Peyser funded Employment Service. This data table shows the percentage of veteran and eligible persons who were not employed at program entry who were then employed in the first quarter after exit by Program Year (PY) for each state, ranked from highest to lowest VEER.

Virginia Works (Department of Workforce Development and Advancement) today announced that Virginia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in January remained unchanged at 3.0 percent, which is 0.1 percentage point below the rate from a year ago. According to household survey data in January, the number of employed residents increased by 8,212 to 4,448,520 and the number of unemployed residents increased by 346 to 139,731. The labor force increased by 8,558 to 4,588,251. Virginia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is 0.7 percentage points below the national rate, which remained unchanged at 3.7 percent.

The Commonwealth’s labor force participation rate increased by 0.1 percentage points to 66.6 percent in January. The labor force participation rate measures the proportion of the civilian population age 16 and older that is employed or actively looking for work.

In January, Virginia’s nonagricultural employment, from the monthly establishment survey increased by 8,700 to 4,200,000. December’s preliminary estimate of employment, after revision, increased by 34,300 to 4,191,300. In January, private sector employment increased by 4,200 to 3,458,500 while government employment increased by 4,500 to 741,500. Within that sector, federal government jobs increased by 700 to 190,500, state government employment increased by 3,700 to 157,400, and local government increased by 100 to 393,600 over the month. Seasonally adjusted total nonfarm employment data is produced for eleven industry sectors. In January, six experienced over-the-month job gains, one remained unchanged, and four experienced a decline. The largest job gain occurred in Professional and Business Services (+5,100) to 807,900. The second largest job gain occurred in Government (+4,500) to 741,500. The third largest job gain occurred in Financial Activities (+1,400) to 224,000.
