    Time period covered
    2007 - 2023
    Area covered
    The Netherlands
    Description

This table contains statistics regarding income and capital of self-employed persons in the Netherlands. A distinction is made between, on the one hand, persons for whom self-employment provides for the main source of income, and on the other hand all persons with income from self-employed work. The figures in this table are broken down by type of self-employed person, sector, gender, age, migration background, position in the household, and by income and wealth decile groups.

All statistics in this table are at the individual level, this includes capital; (corporate) assets are summed per household and then assigned to all household members, thus serving as a measure of personal prosperity. The sample date for both population and capital is the first of January of the reporting year. For the older years 2007 up to and including 2010, capital is sampled on the first of January of the year following the reporting year.

The General Business Register (ABR) is used to determine the sector (SBI) of self-employed persons. The ABR has been subject to various trend breaks in the period 2007-2011. This leads to a sharp decrease in the number of self-employed persons in the financial services (sector K) in 2010. Therefore caution is advised when consulting sector trends or comparing numbers across sectors.

    Data available from: 2007.

Status of the figures: The figures for 2006 to 2022 are final. The figures for 2023 are preliminary.

Changes as of November 1 2024: Figures for 2022 have been finalized. Figures for 2023 have been added.

Changes as of March 2022: Figures on the wealth of the self-employed in 2010 were incorrect, and have been removed. For this year the wealth of 2011 applies, as 2011 marks a shift in sample date from December 31 to January 1. Missing wealth figures for 2013 have been supplemented.

Changes as of July 2021: Revised data for 2006 to 2019 have been added. Due to the availability of new sources and improvements in the methodology, wealth figures have changed. Additionally everyone with personnel is now classified as self-employed with employee (formerly this distinction was based solely on the enterprise constituting the main source of income).

When will new figures be published? New figures for 2024 will be published in December 2025.

    Wales
    Description

The data in this dataset relates to the status of persons employed in Wales, breaking the total down into those who are self-employed or employees and those who are in full time or part time. As the data come from a survey, the results are sample-based estimates and therefore subject to differing degrees of sampling variability, i.e. the true value for any measure lies in a differing range about the estimated value. This range or sampling variability increases as the detail in the data increases, for example individual local authority data are subject to higher variability than Wales data. LFS data is collected throughout the year, and is available from the ONS in a variety of ways. This dataset contains the latest annual results, as referred to in the second bullet below. Key data on the labour market is updated every month showing the position for the latest three months, for the UK and each of the UK countries and English regions. Note these data are seasonally adjusted and also that no sub-regional (i.e. local authority) data are published by the ONS to a monthly timetable. Annual results covering the periods described earlier are also available from the ONS, providing more detailed data from the LFS, including data for sub-Wales geographies. These annual datasets use results from the samples for the quarterly surveys used for the key series, together with results from additional persons sampled to provide a more robust (boosted) dataset, with estimates subject to much lower sampling variability. Quarterly results are also available, again providing more detailed data from the LFS than the key series, including data for sub-Wales geographies. However, although these data are available earlier than the data taken from the annual datasets, data for sub-Wales geographies taken from the quarterly datasets are no longer included on StatsWales as the results are far less robust than those which come from the annual datasets. Note that as data are taken from the ANNUAL Labour Force Survey datasets they do NOT exactly match annual averages derived from the 4 QUARTERLY datasets in the relevant 12 month period covered due to differences in the sampling structure.

    Description

Data shows the number of jobs and job density by borough.

The number of jobs in an area is composed of jobs done by residents (of any age) and jobs done by workers (of any age) who commute into the area.

Total jobs is a workplace based measure of jobs and comprises:

    - employees (from the Annual Business Inquiry),

    - self-employment jobs (from the Annual Population Survey), People who are self-employed in a second job are included in the self-employed totals.

    - government-supported trainees (from DfES and DWP) and

    - HM Forces (from MoD).

Job density is the number of jobs per resident of working age (male and female: 16-64). For example, a job density of 1.0 would mean that there is one job for every resident of working age in the population.

More information on jobs available in Workplace Employment by Sex and Status, Borough and modelled estimates and projections of jobs are available in the GLA Employment Projections. These are considered to be the most accurate jobs estimates at borough level.

    Description

Numbers of jobs in an area by gender, and whether an employee or self-employed.

This data shows the number of jobs, not the number of people. People with more than one job are counted more than once.

Figures may not add up due to rounding. Figures are rounded to the nearest thousand. Percentages are rounded to one decimal place and were calculated on unrounded figures.

Employees - An employee is anyone aged 16 years or over that an organisation directly pays from its payroll(s), in return for carrying out a full-time or part-time job or being on a training scheme. It excludes voluntary workers, self-employed and working owners who are not paid via PAYE

People who are self-employed in a second job are included in the self-employed totals.

Self-employment data is taken from the Annual Population Survey, and is by place of work. The micro data is available from the UK Data Archive.

The male/female split for employee jobs was taken from the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings data from NOMISweb.co.uk. These proportions were then applied to the BRES employee totals since the ASHE is a not a reliable source for total employee jobs.

See more on the BRES website.

Modelled estimates and projections of jobs are available in the GLA Employment Projections. These are considered to be the most accurate jobs estimates at borough level.

    Description

This table presents population data and data for total employment and its two components: employees and self-employed people. The presentation is according to the national concept, which is defined by the residence of the person. Employment refers to residents who are employed (or self-employed) in resident and non-resident producer units.

These indicators were presented in the previous dissemination system in the QNA dataset.
