Analysis of ‘Unemployment and mental illness survey’ provided by Analyst-2 (analyst-2.ai), based on source dataset retrieved from https://www.kaggle.com/michaelacorley/unemployment-and-mental-illness-survey on 28 January 2022.
--- Dataset description provided by original source is as follows ---
This is a paid research survey to explore the linkage between mental illness and unemployment. NAMI has conducted multiple surveys verifying the high unemployment rate among those with mental illness, but this is the only survey to date which targets causation (why they are unemployed). Statistical significance of the variance has long since been proven by previous, larger samples.

I received several messages about methodology of collection because various people would like to use this data for papers.
I paid respondents on Survey Monkey in a general population sampling. I did not target any specific demographic as not to get skewed results. Survey Monkey stratifies the sample according to certain characteristics like income and location.
I know that the general population sampling went well because the number of people self identifying as having a mental illness is consistent with larger samples.
Although we disqualified people without a mental illness, they were still given the complete survey. That means that the data contains sampling of people with and without mental illness and a yes/no indicator.
***Sample size:** n = 334; 80 w/ mental illness - this proportion is approximately equal to estimates of the general population diagnosed with mental illness (typically estimated at 20-25% according to various studies).*

When comparing the actual rate to government statistics, it is important to take into account the labor force participation rate (the % of people who are legally considered to be in the workforce). People not included in the unemployment statistic, like discouraged workers (for example the mentally ill) will be "not participating" in the workforce.

The Mass Layoff Statistics (MLS) program collects reports on mass layoff actions that result in workers being separated from their jobs. Monthly mass layoff numbers are from establishments which have at least 50 initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) filed against them during a 5-week period. Extended mass layoff numbers (issued quarterly) are from a subset of such establishments—where private sector nonfarm employers indicate that 50 or more workers were separated from their jobs for at least 31 days. MLS was eliminated in 2013 under sequestration. For more information and data visit: https://www.bls.gov/mls/

This dataset provides the number of graduates who enrolled in each type of postsecondary education per district.
Wage records are obtained from the Massachusetts Department of Unemployment Assistance (DUA) using a secure, anonymized matching process with limitations. For details on the process and suppression rules, please visit the Employment and Earnings of High School Graduates dashboard.
This dataset is one of three containing the same data that is also published in the Employment and Earnings of High School Graduates dashboard: Average Earnings by Student Group Average Earnings by Industry College and Career Outcomes
List of Outcomes
The data link between high school graduates and future earnings makes it possible to follow students beyond high school and college into the workforce, enabling long-term evaluation of educational programs using workforce outcomes.
While DESE has published these data in the past, as of June 2025 we are temporarily pausing updates due to an issue conducting the link that was brought to our attention in 2023 by a team of researchers. The issue impacts the earnings information for students who never attended a postsecondary institution or who only attended private or out-of-state colleges or universities, beginning with the 2017 high school graduation cohort, with growing impact in each successive high school graduation cohort.
The issue does not impact the earnings information for students who attended a Massachusetts public institution of higher education, and earnings data for those students will continue to be updated.
Once a solution is found, the past cohorts of data with low match rates will be updated. DESE and partner agencies are exploring linking strategies to maximize the utility of the information.
More detailed information can be found in the attached memo provided by the research team from the Annenberg Institute. We thank them for calling this issue to our attention.

This data set indicates how many people employed in Cambridge are covered by the unemployment insurance compensation system, the number employed by economic sector, and how much these workers earn.
The data covers the work force in Cambridge, regardless of their place of residence, and are taken from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, ES-202 Series based on the requirements set forth in the Massachusetts Employment Security Law (1967 to present) and the Compensation for Federal Employees Law (1980 to present). Note that the unemployment compensation system does cover all workers, excluding groups such as the self-employer, religious workers and some domestic workers.
This data set assigns workers to sectors using the the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. Since 2001, only the North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS) code system is used to assign workers to sectors. Older, historic data is available in the open data set "Cambridge Workforce By Industry: 2001 - Present". The 2001 figures summarize the same raw data but are recoded to NAICS there.
