Fires set for slash-and-burn agriculture contribute to the current unsustainable accumulation of atmospheric greenhouse gases, and they also deplete the soil of essential nutrients, which compromises agricultural sustainability at local scales. Integrated assessments of greenhouse gas emissions have compared intensive cropping systems in industrialized countries, but such assessments have not been applied to common cropping systems of smallholder farmers in developing countries. We report an integrated assessment of greenhouse gas emissions in slash-and-burn agriculture and an alternative chop-and-mulch system in the Amazon Basin. The soil consumed atmospheric methane under slash-and-burn treatment and became a net emitter of methane to the atmosphere under the mulch treatment. Mulching also caused about a 50% increase in soil emissions of nitric oxide and nitrous oxide and required greater use of fertilizer and fuel for farm machinery. Despite these significantly higher emissions of greenhouse gases during the cropping phase under the alternative chop-and-mulch system, calculated pyrogenic emissions in the slash-and-burn system were much larger, especially for methane. The global warming potential CO2-equivalent emissions calculated for the entire crop cycles were at least five times lower in chop-and-mulch compared to slash-and-burn. The crop yields were similar for the two systems. While economic and logistical considerations remain to be worked out for alternatives to slash-and-burn, these results demonstrate a potential win-win strategy for maintaining soil fertility and reducing net greenhouse gas emissions, thus simultaneously contributing to sustainability at both spatial scales.

The Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program (GHGRP) collects information on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions annually from facilities across Canada. It is a mandatory program for those who meet the requirements. Facilities that emit 10 kilotonnes or more of GHGs, in carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent (eq.) units, per year must report their emissions to Environment and Climate Change Canada. The emissions data is available in two files, each presenting emissions by different breakdowns and offered in two convenient formats for downloads: .xlsx and .csv. The Emissions by Gas file, covering data from 2004 to present, contains emissions (in tonnes and tonnes of CO2 eq.) for each facility categorized by gas type, including carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFC), perfluorocarbons (PFC), and sulphur hexafluoride (SF6). The Emissions by Source file, starting from 2022, includes emissions data (in tonnes and tonnes of CO2 eq.) broken down by source category, encompassing Stationary Fuel Combustion, Industrial Process, On-site Transportation, Waste, Wastewater, Venting, Flaring, and Leakage. For additional information and usage guidelines, please refer to the accompanying "Lisez Moi - Read Me" file. Additionally, our data search tool can assist you in efficiently navigating and extracting specific information from the GHGRP's data. Three files containing data sets used in the paper titled "Prediction of Gas Hydrate Formation at Blake Ridge using Machine Learning and Probabilistic Reservoir Simulation" published in Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems (G-Cubed). Two files are in ASCII format and contain geographic information and geophysical or statistical variable values. The third (FigureData.h5) is in HDF5 format and contains sediment profile outputs used to make each of the figures in the manuscript. Groups are named after the Figure they correspond to (i.e., Figure_03, Figure_04, Figure_06, and Figure_11). Description of the files is provided in "Data Description SAND2021-2004 O.pdf" along with example Python scripts on how to load data into arrays.
A cells polygon feature class was created by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to illustrate the degree of exploration, type of production, and distribution of production in the State of Ohio. Each cell represents a quarter-mile square of the land surface, and the cells are coded to represent whether the wells included within the cell are predominantly oil-producing, gas-producing, both oil and gas-producing, or the type of production of the wells located within the cell is unknown or dry. The well information was acquired from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological Survey in a Geographic Information System (GIS) data layer that contains all of the locatable oil and gas wells in Ohio. Cells were developed as a graphic solution to overcome the problem of displaying proprietary well data. No proprietary data are displayed or included in the cell maps. The data are current as of 2004.

The 2025 annual OPEC basket price stood at ***** U.S. dollars per barrel as of June. This would be lower than the 2024 average, which amounted to ***** U.S. dollars. The abbreviation OPEC stands for Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and includes Algeria, Angola, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, and the United Arab Emirates. The aim of the OPEC is to coordinate the oil policies of its member states. It was founded in 1960 in Baghdad, Iraq. The OPEC Reference Basket The OPEC crude oil price is defined by the price of the so-called OPEC (Reference) basket. This basket is an average of prices of the various petroleum blends that are produced by the OPEC members. Some of these oil blends are, for example: Saharan Blend from Algeria, Basra Light from Iraq, Arab Light from Saudi Arabia, BCF 17 from Venezuela, et cetera. By increasing and decreasing its oil production, OPEC tries to keep the price between a given maxima and minima. Benchmark crude oil The OPEC basket is one of the most important benchmarks for crude oil prices worldwide. Other significant benchmarks are UK Brent, West Texas Intermediate (WTI), and Dubai Crude (Fateh). Because there are many types and grades of oil, such benchmarks are indispensable for referencing them on the global oil market. The 2025 fall in prices was the result of weakened demand outlooks exacerbated by extensive U.S. trade tariffs.

We have updated and extended the dataset on giant oil discoveries previously published by Mike Horn under the auspice of the AAPG that contains discoveries from 1868 to 2010 (Halbouty, 2014; Horn, 2004). Beyond incorporating new discoveries after 2010 up to 2018 (and soon 2020), and corrections to the data, the main contribution has been to provide estimates of the US dollar value of the petroleum field presented in terms of Net Present Value (NPV). This is based on the discoveries’ estimated ultimate recoverable (EUR) amount of oil and gas, measured in nominal and real US dollars, using the price of petroleum in the year of discovery. In 2004, the Yukon Oil and Gas Management Branch in Whitehorse, arranged with the National Energy Board (NEB) in 2004 to compile formation tops for the Yukon oil and gas wells. Previously, Yukon well tops had been picked by a number of geologists from the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC). Many of these well tops were published in various GSC publications and in several editions of the NEB Schedule of Wells. This report is an effort to update and revise the formation tops and to offer a consistent data set spanning the entire territory. In total, 73 oil and gas were drilled during the period 1957 to 2005. The majority of these wells were drilled between 1957 and 1985, however, there was been drilling activity in the Territory in 2004 and 2005. Formation tops for this dataset were picked using wireline logs exclusively. The data are presented in both imperial and metric values to accommodate both historical and recent well data, as well as user preference. The data set is complemented by the Yukon Stratigraphic Correlation Chart v. 3.04. Formation tops are useful for the regional mapping of subsurface horizons. A variety of information can be obtained from this type of mapping, including structural trends and facies boundaries. Using regional correlation of formation tops, cross-sections can be constructed to aid in the understanding of basin morphology. The List of Wells and Formation Tops, Yukon Territory, version 1.0, is an evolving dataset. We encourage comments and notification of any errors. This dataset will be updated regularly when new research warrants revision.
