    Description

The IZA Evaluation Dataset Survey (IZA ED) was developed in order to obtain reliable longitudinal estimates for the impact of Active Labor Market Policies (ALMP). Moreover, it is suitable for studying the processes of job search and labor market reintegration. The data allow analyzing dynamics with respect to a rich set of individual and labor market characteristics. It covers the initial period of unemployment as well as long-term outcomes, for a total period of up to 3 years after unemployment entry. A longitudinal questionnaire records monthly labor market activities and their duration in detail for the mentioned period. These activities are, for example, employment, unemployment, ALMP, other training etc. Available information covers employment status, occupation, sector, and related earnings, hours, unemployment benefits or other transfer payments. A cross-sectional questionnaire contains all basic information including the process of entering into unemployment, and demographics. The entry into unemployment describes detailed job search behavior such as search intensity, search channels and the role of the Employment Agency. Moreover, reservation wages and individual expectations about leaving unemployment or participating in ALMP programs are recorded. The available demographic information covers employment status, occupation and sector, as well as specifics about citizenship and ethnic background, educational levels, number and age of children, household structure and income, family background, health status, and workplace as well as place of residence regions. The survey provides as well detailed information about the treatment by the unemployment insurance authorities, imposed labor market policies, benefit receipt and sanctions. The survey focuses additionally on individual characteristics and behavior. Such co-variates of individuals comprise social networks, ethnic and migration background, relations and identity, personality traits, cognitive and non-cognitive skills, life and job satisfaction, risky behavior, attitudes and preferences. The main advantages of the IZA ED are the large sample size of unemployed individuals, the accuracy of employment histories, the innovative and rich set of individual co-variates and the fact that the survey measures important characteristics shortly after entry into unemployment.

    Description

    Context

This is a dataset that I built by scraping the United States Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics. I was looking for county-level unemployment data and realized that there was a data source for this, but the data set itself hadn't existed yet, so I decided to write a scraper and build it out myself.

    Content

This data represents the Local Area Unemployment Statistics from 1990-2016, broken down by state and month. The data itself is pulled from this mapping site:

    https://data.bls.gov/map/MapToolServlet?survey=la&map=county&seasonal=u

Further, the ever-evolving and ever-improving codebase that pulled this data is available here:

    https://github.com/jayrav13/bls_local_area_unemployment

    Acknowledgements

Of course, a huge shoutout to bls.gov and their open and transparent data. I've certainly been inspired to dive into US-related data recently and having this data open further enables my curiosities.

    Inspiration

I was excited about building this data set out because I was pretty sure something similar didn't exist - curious to see what folks can do with it once they run with it! A curious question I had was surrounding Unemployment vs 2016 Presidential Election outcome down to the county level. A comparison can probably lead to interesting questions and discoveries such as trends in local elections that led to their most recent election outcome, etc.

    Next Steps

Version 1 of this is as a massive JSON blob, normalized by year / month / state. I intend to transform this into a CSV in the future as well.

    Description

The employment and unemployment indicator shows several data points. The first figure is the number of people in the labor force, which includes the number of people who are either working or looking for work. The second two figures, the number of people who are employed and the number of people who are unemployed, are the two subcategories of the labor force. The unemployment rate is a calculation of the number of people who are in the labor force and unemployed as a percentage of the total number of people in the labor force.

The unemployment rate does not include people who are not employed and not in the labor force. This includes adults who are neither working nor looking for work. For example, full-time students may choose not to seek any employment during their college career, and are thus not considered in the unemployment rate. Stay-at-home parents and other caregivers are also considered outside of the labor force, and therefore outside the scope of the unemployment rate.

The unemployment rate is a key economic indicator, and is illustrative of economic conditions in the county at the individual scale.

There are additional considerations to the unemployment rate. Because it does not count those who are outside the labor force, it can exclude individuals who were looking for a job previously, but have since given up. The impact of this on the overall unemployment rate is difficult to quantify, but it is important to note because it shows that no statistic is perfect.

The unemployment rates for Champaign County, the City of Champaign, and the City of Urbana are extremely similar between 2000 and 2023.

All three areas saw a dramatic increase in the unemployment rate between 2006 and 2009. The unemployment rates for all three areas decreased overall between 2010 and 2019. However, the unemployment rate in all three areas rose sharply in 2020 due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The unemployment rate in all three areas dropped again in 2021 as pandemic restrictions were removed, and were almost back to 2019 rates in 2022. However, the unemployment rate in all three areas rose slightly from 2022 to 2023.

This data is sourced from the Illinois Department of Employment Security’s Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS), and from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Sources: Illinois Department of Employment Security, Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS); U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

--- Dataset description provided by original source is as follows ---

ANOFM calculates and publishes statistical indicators on registered unemployment, as required by the law. Registered unemployed persons represent both the unemployed paid (unemployed jobseekers with work experience benefits and SOMERI recipients of unemployment benefits without work experience/education graduates) as well as the unemployed (without receiving unemployment benefits) and are squeezed on the basis of data from the primary documents and records in the database of territorial employment agencies. The civilian active population represents the potential labour supply and employment of the civilian and registered unemployed population. The indicator is determined annually by the National Institute of Statistics by means of the balance of labour at country, development region and county level. The rate of summons is calculated with the population of civil activity on 1 January 2017. The total number of registered SOMERI is structured on: Gender (women, Barbate), Type of compensation (indemnities, non-indemnities); Level of education (without education, primary education, secondary education, upper secondary education, postgraduate education, professional education/arts and trades, university education); Age groups (under 25, 25-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-55 years, over 55 years). Description

Statistical open data on LAU regions of Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary (and other countries in the future). LAU1 regions are called counties, okres, okresy, powiat, járás, járási, NUTS4, LAU, Local Administrative Units, ... and there are 733 of them in this V4 dataset. Overall, we cover 733 regions which are described by 137.828 observations (panel data rows) and more than 1.760.229 data points.

This LAU dataset contains panel data on population, on age structure of inhabitants, on number and on structure of registered unemployed. Dataset prepared by Michal Páleník. Output files are in json, shapefiles, xls, ods, json, topojson or CSV formats. Downloadable at zenodo.org.

    This dataset consists of:

data on unemployment (by gender, education and duration of unemployment),

    Description

Unemployment rates represent unemployed persons as a percentage of the labour force. The labour force is the total number of people employed and unemployed. Unemployed persons comprise persons aged 15 to 74 who were: a. without work during the reference week, b. currently available for work, i.e. were available for paid employment or self-employment before the end of the two weeks following the reference week, c. actively seeking work, i.e. had taken specific steps in the four weeks period ending with the reference week to seek paid employment or self-employment or who found a job to start later, i.e. within a period of, at most, three months. This table does not only show unemployment rates but also unemployed in 1000 and as % of the total population.
