Project Contract Signed - The overall objective of this project is to ensure forests, biodiversity and seascape ecosystems in Eastern and Southern Africa are sustainably managed and continue providing ecosystem services and contribute to the well-being of the populations, by providing improved, regular and updated information for informed decision making
A protected area is a clearly defined geographical space, recognized, dedicated and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values. This dashboard shows the protected areas we have in the 24 countries covered in Eastern and Southern Africa. The data is pulled from the protected planet which is the world database of protected area. The dashboard is hosted at the Regional Centre of Excellence for Biodiversity, Forests and Seascape Ecosystems Management in Eastern and Southern Africa. The RCoEs will enable knowledge and informed decisions in responding to megatrends including climate change, environmental degradation, population growth, technological development and diversification of security threats in Sub-Saharan Africa. The overall objective of the project is to ensure forests, biodiversity and seascape ecosystems in Eastern and Southern Africa are sustainably managed and continue providing ecosystem services and contribute to the well-being of the populations, by providing improved, regular and updated information for informed decision-making. This dashboard shows the forest cover percentage, forest cover change trend from 1990 to 2020 and forest ownership. The data is applicable for the following countries Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania and Uganda. https://rcoe-geoportal.rcmrd.org The source of this data is from State of Uganda Forestry 2015, Kenya National Forest Programme, Global Forest Resources Assessment 2020 for Tanzania, Ethiopia Mozambique
This web map is used to show the points and polygons for Protected and Conserved Areas in Eastern and Southern Africa. The data is pulled from UNEP-WCMC protected planet. This site host the World Database on Protected Areas that RCMRD makes contribution through the RCoE project. RCoE is the Regional Excellence for Biodiversity, Forests and Seascape Ecosystems Management in Eastern and Southern Africa. The main dashboard for protected and conserved areas is accessible on this link.
A protected area is a clearly defined geographical space, recognized, dedicated and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values. This dashboard is hosted at the Regional Centre of Excellence (RCoE) located in Nairobi, Kenya. The RCoE geoportal is a Eastern and Southern Africa for the Eastern and Southern African region that supports better decision making for fair and effective management and governance of Protected and Conserved Areas https://rcoe-geoportal.rcmrd.orgThe Regional Centre of Excellence offers information management systems and tools, capacity building, knowledge sharing products and communication activities aiming to reinforce the management effectiveness and governance of protected areas and surrounding communities in Eastern and Southern Africa region.
The RCoE geoportal provides a platform for sharing, exchanging, and accessing data and information related to East and Southern Africa’s forests, biodiversity and seascapes ecosystems. The objective of the observatory is to produce a comprehensive and harmonized regional dataset on the latest trends and threats to forests, biodiversity and seascapes to make information useful and easily accessible to policymakers, funders, practitioners and citizens. By informing decision-making, RCoE supports 24 countries in the region to meet their climate and environment targets. In these 24 countries, RCoE works closely with focal point institutions in biodiversity, forestry and seascapes.Although RCoE’s databases already provide an initial overview of these priority areas, collaboration with participating countries is needed to ensure that data is updated and more information is collected. The RCoE database provides information such as streamlined country-level information on forestry, biodiversity and seascapes. RCoE Geoportal
