    Description

Over the observed years, the population of Hungary gradually decreased. On January 1, 2025, the country's population amounted to 9.54 million people, compared to over 10.4 million recorded in 1989. What are the drivers of population decline?  Emigration is just one of the causes behind Hungary’s decreasing population. Over the past decade, the number of deaths exceeded the number of live births in the country each year, which contributed to the country’s aging population. The Hungarian government has introduced various financial incentives to fight this phenomenon and increase fertility rates in the country; however, it remains to be seen whether these measures will bring the desired results. From which countries are people immigrating to Hungary?  Net migration in Hungary has presented positive values over the past years, meaning that the number of immigrants exceeded the number of people leaving the country. In 2023, the highest number of foreigners arrived from Asian countries their number measuring at nearly 22,000. Vietnamese constituted the second-largest group, with approximately 9,700 people moving to Hungary during the same year.

    Description

Introduction: Uterus transplantation (UTx) is a novel, clinically successful treatment option for patients with absolute uterine factor infertility (AUFI) seeking biological motherhood. The procedure has been performed over 100 times worldwide in the past decade at 20 centers, but it remains widely unfamiliar, even among healthcare professionals. This study aimed to reveal the public opinion about the procedure and also identified knowledge gaps in the investigated population’s perception of UTx in Hungary. Methods: This prospective study, conducted between December 18, 2024, and January 5, 2025, consisted of an online survey involving 2896 participants. Out of them the final sample size of 1500 people were selected using an iterative mathematical weighting procedure adjusted to the 2022 Hungarian census data, which made the sample to be representative according to age, gender, education and place of residence for the Hungarian internet user population aged between 18 and 70. The questionnaire contained 24 questions on their opinions about organ donation, transplantation, infertility, surrogacy, and UTx. Results: Most of the participants (77%, 1155/1500) supported UTx (strongly agree: 44%, 660/1500; agree: 33%, 495/1500). Among participants personally affected by fertility problems, 84% (152/181) supported UTx, with 51% (92/181) strongly agreeing that it should be performed. Only 4% rejected UTx. Importantly, only 15% of the responders heard of UTx being performed abroad. Conclusions: Our online survey demonstrates approval by the participants regarding UTx, as a procedure proding hope for those AUFI patients who are seeking biological motherhood, although increased public awareness is necessary in the topic to widen the general knowledge about the topic.
