Materials discovery and development necessarily begins with the preparation and identification of product phase(s). Crystalline compounds can be identified by their characteristic diffraction patterns using X-rays, neutrons, and or electrons. An estimated 20,000 X-ray diffractometers and a comparable number of electron microscopes are used daily in materials research and development laboratories for this purpose. Access to crystal structure data is a critical step in solving research and applications problems in materials researches, and these data are of interest to analysts in areas such as materials design, property prediction and compound identification. NIST Crystallographic Data Center, in collaboration with partners all over the world, evaluates and disseminates chemical, physical and crystallographic information published on these materials. NIST Standard Reference Database 3: NIST Inorganic Crystal Structure Database (NIST ICSD) is a comprehensive collection of crystal structure data of nonorganic compounds (including inorganics, ceramics, minerals, pure elements, metals, and intermetallic systems) containing over 210,000 entries and covering the literature from 1913. NIST ICSD includes entries that fall into the following categories: full structure data from experimental refinement or derived from their iso-structural structure types, theoretically predicted structures from computer simulations, as well as partially characterized structures. The NIST ICSD web application provides materials researchers with a user-friendly interface to search the database based on bibliographic information, chemistry, unit cell, space group, experimental settings, mineral name/group and other derived data from expert evaluation. In addition, it also provides users with functions to easily create and examine results from various crystallographic computations, such as reduced cell, bond distance/angle, calculated powder diffraction data, and structure standardization.

The global market size for Pacemakers and Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs) was valued at approximately $9.5 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach around $15.2 billion by 2032, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.3%. This growth is driven by an aging population, advancements in medical technology, and increasing prevalence of cardiovascular diseases. These devices are critical in managing and treating heart rhythm disorders, contributing to the market's expansion.
One of the primary growth factors for the market is the rising prevalence of cardiovascular diseases globally. With an increasing number of individuals diagnosed with heart conditions such as arrhythmias, the demand for pacemakers and ICDs is on the rise. According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide, emphasizing the need for effective management solutions like pacemakers and ICDs. This surge in cardiovascular conditions is propelling the market forward, with healthcare providers and patients seeking reliable and efficient treatment options.
Technological advancements in the field of cardiology are another significant growth driver. Innovations such as MRI-compatible pacemakers, leadless pacemakers, and subcutaneous ICDs have revolutionized the market. These advanced devices offer better patient outcomes, reduced complications, and enhanced functionality, making them highly sought after. Additionally, ongoing research and development efforts are focused on improving device performance, miniaturization, and longevity, further fueling market growth. The continuous evolution of pacemaker and ICD technology is set to provide more effective and patient-friendly solutions, augmenting market prospects.
Moreover, increasing awareness and accessibility to healthcare services are contributing to market growth. Governments and healthcare organizations across the globe are investing in improving cardiovascular care infrastructure, particularly in emerging economies. Programs aimed at early diagnosis and treatment of heart conditions are leading to higher adoption rates of pacemakers and ICDs. Additionally, favorable reimbursement policies and insurance coverage for cardiac procedures are encouraging more patients to opt for these life-saving devices. The collective efforts to enhance healthcare accessibility and affordability are playing a crucial role in expanding the market.
Subcutaneous Implantable Defibrillators (S-ICDs) represent a significant advancement in the field of cardiac rhythm management. Unlike traditional ICDs, S-ICDs are implanted under the skin without the need for transvenous leads, which can reduce the risk of complications associated with lead placement. This innovative design not only enhances patient safety but also simplifies the implantation procedure, making it a preferred choice for certain patient populations. The growing acceptance of S-ICDs is driven by their ability to provide effective defibrillation therapy while minimizing the invasiveness of the procedure. As healthcare providers become more familiar with the benefits of S-ICDs, their adoption is expected to increase, contributing to the overall growth of the ICD market.
On the regional front, North America holds a significant share in the pacemakers and ICDs market, attributed to advanced healthcare infrastructure and high patient awareness levels. Europe follows closely, driven by a robust healthcare system and the presence of key market players. The Asia Pacific region is anticipated to witness the fastest growth, buoyed by improving healthcare facilities and a growing patient population. Countries like China and India are experiencing a surge in demand for pacemakers and ICDs due to increasing healthcare expenditures and rising awareness about cardiovascular health.
The market for pacemakers and ICDs can be segmented by product type into Single Chamber Pacemakers, Dual Chamber Pacemakers, Biventricular Pacemakers, Single Chamber ICDs, Dual Chamber ICDs, and Biventricular ICDs. Single Chamber Pacemakers, which stimulate only one chamber of the heart, are commonly used for patients with specific types of arrhythmias. While they are relatively less complex and generally cost-effective, advancements in technology are leading to more sophisticated devices that can provide better patient

Database for completely identified inorganic crystal structures. Collection of known inorganic crystal structures published since 1913, including their atomic coordinates. Includes only data which have passed thorough quality checks. Tool for materials research.
The Inorganic Crystal Structure Database (ICSD) is produced cooperatively by the Fachinformationszentrum Karlsruhe (FIZ) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Components and devices used in a broad spectrum of technology sectors such as health care, communications, energy and electronics are manufactured from crystalline materials; the development of advanced crystalline materials requires accurate crystal-structure data. SRD 84 ICSD provides critically evaluated, comprehensive crystal-structure data and search software that enable phase identification by their characteristic diffraction patterns using X-rays, neutrons and electrons. SRD 84 ICSD contains full crystallographic and atomic-position information for more than 180,000 non-organic materials, including inorganics, ceramics, minerals, pure elements, metals and intermetallics, published in literature from 1913 through the present. ICSD is updated twice a year, with each update comprising about 2,000 to 10,000 new or re-evaluated entries. Data items include bibliographic information, compound designation such as chemical name, chemical formula, mineral name; and crystallographic parameters such as unit cell, space group, element symbol with numbering, oxidation state, multiplicity for Wyckoff position, x,y,z coordinates, site occupation, thermal parameters and reliability index R, among others. A free demonstration CD which includes a comprehensive user interface, FindIt, for a demo database is available upon request or can be downloaded from the website https://www.nist.gov/srd/nist-standard-reference-database-84.

Germany had the highest rate of hospitals implanting cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) in 2021 at 8.9 per million population. The lowest amount of ICDs were implanted in Moldova, Belarus, and Slovakia. An ICD is a device that detects a life-threatening, rapid heartbeat. In case of detecting abnormal heartbeat the ICD sends an electrical shock to the heart which corrects the rhythm. ICDs are used to prevent sudden death in people with arrhythmia, ventricular tachycardia, congenital heart disease or cardiac sarcoidosis
In financial year 2021, more than ** million mothers and children benefitted under Integrated Child Development Scheme in India. The beneficiaries covered under ICDS include children up to the age of ***, pregnant women, and lactating mothers.
