This dataset represents the water feature areas (for example, lakes and ponds) of Lake County, Illinois. The features captured in this polygon dataset include: lakes, ponds, detention/retention basins, river/streams/creeks greater than five feet wide, and islands.
The data has not been field verified and errors and/or omissions may be present.
The names used for the water bodies were collected from a number of sources including: existing datasets, historic maps and/or atlases, US Geologic Survey (USGS) Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), current and historical USGS topographic quadrangle maps, local publications on place names within the county, and platted subdivisions.
The dataset was updated to reflect changes in spring 2022. The water features were compiled using softcopy analytical stereoplotters. This dataset should meet National Map Accuracy Standards for a 1:1200 product and it is georeferenced to the Illinois State Plane, Eastern Zone, using the NAD83 HARN horizontal datum.
The U.S. Geological Survey-Illinois Water Science Center collected bathymetric data in Lake Calumet and a portion of the Calumet River in the vicinity of Lake Calumet to produce a bathymetric map. The bathymetric survey was conducted over three days (July 26, September 11, and November 7, 2012). Lake Calumet has become a focus area for Asian carp rapid response efforts by state and federal agencies and very little bathymetric data existed prior to this survey. This bathymetric survey provides data for a variety of scientific and engineering studies of the area; for example, hydraulic modelling of water and sediment transport from Lake Calumet to the Calumet River.

Although technically the county's eastern border extends eastward into Lake Michigan to the state line where Illinois meets Michigan, we routinely use the Lake Michigan shoreline as our eastern boundary for mapping purposes. The north, west and south boundaries are based on a compilation of survey data which aligns well, but not perfectly, with the border as mapped by neighboring counties and the State of Wisconsin, which forms the northern boundary of the county. Update Frequency: This dataset is updated on a weekly basis.

Lake Villa Township Special Service Areas
Illinois Public Bodies of Water are defined in 17 Illinois Administrative Code, Chapter I, Section 3704 as all lakes, rivers, streams and waterways which are or were navigable and are open or dedicated to public use including all bayous, sloughs, backwaters and submerged lands connected by water to the main channel or body of water during normal flows or stages. The entire length and surface area of these waters in Illinois are open to the public except to a head of navigation for the following rivers: Sinsiniwa, Galena, Apple, Plum, Des Plaines, Iroquois, Vermilion(Illinois River Basin), Spoon, Sangamon, Sangamon River South Fork, Kaskaskia, Big Muddy, Vermilion (Wabash River Basin), Little Wabash, Saline, and Saline North Fork. A head of navigation limiting public access is also present for the following creeks; Stillman, Henderson, Bay, Macoupin, and Otter. The limiting head of navigation has been mapped for these rivers and creeks using the Public Land Survey System descriptions as listed in 17 IAC Section 3704 Appendix A. The extent of normal flows or stages open to public use are not represented in this dataset or this interactive web map. Additional site-specific data is required to determine the extent of normal flows or stages. Consequently all bayous, sloughs, backwaters and submerged lands connected by water to the main channel or body of water during normal flows or stages have not been mapped within this graphical dataset. The Illinois Public Water extent at the State boundaries are based on USGS 7.5 Minute Quadrangle Maps except for the boundary between Illinois and Kentucky. The Illinois/Kentucky border in this dataset is based on boundary coordinates from Illinois vs. Kentucky No. 106, Original, 500 U.S. 380 (1991) US Supreme Court Case. The final decree was entered on December 2, 1994.
Lake temperature is an important environmental metric for understanding habitat suitability for many freshwater species and is especially useful when temperatures are predicted throughout the water column (known as temperature profiles). In this data release, multiple modeling approaches were used to generate predictions of daily temperature profiles for thousands of lakes in the Midwest.
Predictions were generated using two modeling frameworks: a machine learning model (specifically an entity-aware long short-term memory or EA-LSTM model; Kratzert et al., 2019) and a process-based model (specifically the General Lake Model or GLM; Hipsey et al., 2019). Both the EA-LSTM and GLM frameworks were used to generate lake temperature predictions in the contemporary period (1979-04-12 to 2022-04-11 for EA-LSTM and 1980-01-01 to 2021-12-31 for GLM; times differ due to modeling spin-up/spin-down configurations) using the North American Land Data Assimilation System [NLDAS; Mitchell et al., 2004] as meteorological drivers. In addition, GLM was used to generate lake temperature predictions under future climate scenarios (covering 1981-2000, 2040-2059, and 2080-2099) using six dynamically downscaled Global Climate Models (GCM; Notaro et al., 2018) as meteorological drivers. Appropriate application of the six GCMs is dependent on the use-case and will be up to the user to determine. For an example of a similar analysis in the Midwest and Great Lakes region using 31 GCMs, see Byun and Hamlet, 2018.
The modeling frameworks and driver datasets have slightly different footprints and input data requirements. This means that some of the lakes do not meet the criteria to be included in all three modeling approaches, which results in different numbers of lakes in the output (noted in the file descriptions below). The input data requirements for lakes to be included in the EA-LSTM predictions are lake latitude, longitude, elevation, and surface area, plus NLDAS drivers at the lake's location. All 62,966 lakes included this data release met these requirements. The input data requirements for lakes to be included in the contemporary GLM NLDAS-driven predictions are lake location (within one of the following 11 states: North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri, Arkansas, and Ohio), latitude, longitude, maximum depth (though more detailed hypsography was used where available), surface area, and a clarity esitmate, plus NLDAS drivers at the lake's location. 12,688 lakes included this data release met these requirements. The input data requirements for lakes to be included in the future climate scenario GCM-driven predictions were the same as for the contemporary GLM predictions, except GCM drivers at the lake's location were required in place of NLDAS drivers. 11,715 lakes included this data release met these requirements.

Hydrography Polygons Representing DuPage County, Illinois hydrography: lakes, ponds, wetlands, rivers, streams, creeks, and ditch polygons. The DuPage County surface hydrography coverage reflect extensions to the original surface hydrography ARC/INFO coverage that was built from 1:2400 scale aerial photography and planimetric mapping. The original 1991-92 coverage embraced a simple line-based structure with no polygon definitions. Extensions to the original coverage structure are meant to accommodate more sophisticated Department GIS application needs such as area-based (polygon) measurements, attribute driven thematic displays, network modeling to support hydrologic/hydraulic flow routing, and stream corridor management. An extensive quality control effort was completed in 1996. Updated Spring\Fall 2006 using most current orthophotography. Additional updates have been made to this dataset, and have been completed using the Spring 2013 orthophotography. Updates will be made as needed.
