    Description

Replication files for David Slichter, "The Employment Effects of the Minimum Wage: A Selection Ratio Approach to Measuring Treatment Effects,” Journal of Applied Econometrics, forthcoming Firstly, I’ve provided a .do file called sr.do which contains general code for implementing the selection ratio approach, with detailed instructions written as comments in the code. For the minimum wage application, the main data file is mw_final.dta. A .csv version is also provided. Observations are a county in a time period. I have added self-explanatory variable labels for most variables. A few variables warrant a clearer explanation: adj1-adj14: List of FIPS codes of all counties which are adjacent to the county in question. Each variables holds one adjacent county, and counties with fewer than 14 neighbors will have missing values for some of these variables. change, logchange: Minimum wage this quarter - minimum wage last quarter, measured either in dollars or in logs. time, t1-t108: The variable "time" converts years and quarters into a univariate time period, with time=1 in 1990Q1 and time=108 in 2016Q4. t1-t108 are indicators for each of these time periods. lnemp_1418, lnearnbeg_1418, lnsep_1418, lnhira_1418, lnchurn_1418: Logs of employment, earnings, separations, hires, and churn, respectively, for 14-18 year olds. gt1-gt6: Dummies for inclusion in each of the six comparisons used for the main (i.e., not spillover-robust) analysis. All treated counties which neighbor a control country take value 1 for each of these variables; all other treated counties take value 0. Among control counties, gt1=1 if the county neighbors a treated county and 0 otherwise, gt2=1 if the county has gt1=0 but neighbors a gt1=1 county, gt3=1 if county has gt1=gt2=0 but neighbors a gt2=1 county, etc. h2-h6: Dummies for inclusion in each of the first spillover-robust (i.e., excluding border counties only) comparisons. Among control counties, h2-h6 are equal to gt2-gt6. Among treated counties, h2-h6 are equal to 1 if the treated county has gt1=0 but borders a gt1=1 county, and 0 otherwise. k3-k6: Dummies for inclusion in each of the second spillover-robust (i.e., excluding two layers) comparisons. Among control counties, these variables are equal to gt3-gt6. Among treated counties, all observations take value 1 except those with gt1=1 or h2=1. The data sources are as follows. The minimum wage law series is taken from David Neumark's website (https://www.economics.uci.edu/~dneumark/datasets.html). The economic variables are taken from the QWI, which I accessed via the Ithaca Virtual RDC. County adjacency files were downloaded from the Census Bureau (https://www.census.gov/geo/reference/county-adjacency.html). The file main.do then runs the analyses. The resulting output file containing results is results.dta.

    Description

This repository contains replication data for Carleton et al. (Quarterly Journal of Economics, 2022), "Valuing the mortality consequences of climate change accounting for adaptation costs and benefits". All non-confidential data inputs are included, as well as intermediate data outputs, final data outputs, and final tables and figures for all main text and supplementary tables and figures. Some input data are confidential (e.g., mortality records in some countries); therefore, intermediate regression results files are included in the upload to ensure all later stages of the analysis are fully replicable. The full data output files resulting from Monte Carlo simulations of future climate change impacts on mortality far exceed Zenodo file size limits; therefore, key aggregates of the raw output files are included here, which allow for replication of all tables and figures in the paper.

    • data.zip contains raw, intermediate, and final datasets
    • outputs.zip contains output tables and figures

All replication code for the paper is available on a public Github repository, accessible here.

The manuscript and supplementary information are available at the QJE, here.

    Description

The Kilian and Murphy (Journal of Applied Econometrics, 2014, 29, 454-478) structural vector autoregressive model has become the workhorse model for the analysis of oil markets. I explore various refinements and extensions of this model, including the effects of (1) correcting an error in the measure of global real economic activity, (2) explicitly incorporating narrative sign restrictions into the estimation, (3) relaxing the upper bound on the impact price elasticity of oil supply, (4) evaluating the implied posterior distribution of the structural models, and (5) extending the sample. I demonstrate that the substantive conclusions of Kilian and Murphy (2014) are largely unaffected by these changes.

    Description

Generally, one of the main problems of the oil-exporting economies is their budget dependence on oil revenues, which increases government expenditure during a positive oil shock and usually imposes a considerable budget deficit in time of a negative oil shock. Consequently, these fluctuations lead to macroeconomic instability and, due to the macro-financial linkages, jeopardize the stability of the financial sector. As a result, the way to achieve sustainable growth, which fosters the creation of employment and the formation of capital, has been faced with major disruptions for these economies. In this research, it is shown that how the application of macroeconomic stabilization policies and macroprudential instruments can reduce the adverse effects of oil-revenue fluctuations on the stability of the real sector and the financial sector in such economies.

    Description

In the context of predicting the term structure of interest rates, we explore the marginal predictive content of real-time macroeconomic diffusion indexes extracted from a data rich real-time data set, when used in dynamic Nelson-Siegel (NS) models of the variety discussed in Svensson (NBER technical report, 1994; NSS) and Diebold and Li (Journal of Econometrics, 2006, 130, 337-364; DNS). Our diffusion indexes are constructed using principal component analysis with both targeted and untargeted predictors, with targeting done using the lasso and elastic net. Our findings can be summarized as follows. First, the marginal predictive content of real-time diffusion indexes is significant for the preponderance of the individual models that we examine. The exception to this finding is the post Great Recession period. Second, forecast combinations that include only yield variables result in our most accurate predictions, for most sample periods and maturities. In this case, diffusion indexes do not have marginal predictive content for yields and do not seem to reflect unspanned risks. This points to the continuing usefulness of DNS and NSS models that are purely yield driven. Finally, we find that the use of fully revised macroeconomic data may have an important confounding effect upon results obtained when forecasting yields, as prior research has indicated that diffusion indexes are often useful for predicting yields when constructed using fully revised data, regardless of whether forecast combination is used, or not. Nevertheless, our findings also underscore the potential importance of using machine learning, data reduction, and shrinkage methods in contexts such as term structure modeling.

Cite as: Sheng, Y, Jackson, T and Lawson, K ,2018, Evaluating the benefits from transport infrastructure in agriculture: a hedonic analysis of farmland prices. Australian Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics. doi:10.1111/1467-8489.12243 Access to transport infrastructure generates a range of benefits to the agriculture sector; many of which are difficult to measure directly. In this study, we use hedonic regression analysis of farm-level data to examine the contribution of transport infrastructure to the value of farmland traded between 2009 and 2011 through its impact on farm productivity. We show that a one per cent of reduction in the cost of transportation between farms and ports leads to a 0.33 per cent increase in land prices, and there is no significant difference between rail and road transportation at the aggregate level. Moreover, the benefits generated by particular types of infrastructure services vary between industries and with farm size, suggesting there are multiple channels through which public infrastructure influences agricultural production. Our findings help to inform future investment decisions in Australia and in other countries by providing new evidence regarding the benefits of existing transport infrastructure.

    Description

This paper makes two empirical contributions to the literature, based on predictions generated by a lobby groupmodel. First, we investigate how environmental lobby groups affect the determination of environmental policy in rich and developing countries. Second, we explore the interaction between democratic participation and political (electoral) competition. The empirical findings suggest that environmental lobby groups tend to positively affect the stringency of environmental policy. Moreover, political competition tends to raise policy stringency, in particular where citizens’ participation in the democratic process is widespread.

    Description

Abstract The relationship between supply and demand generates commercial cycles. Operant behavioral economics explain that these cycles are shaped by three-term bilateral contingencies – situations that create supply and demand responses and which, in turn, generate reinforcing or punitive consequences that can maintain or mitigate these. Research shows how the commercial cycle of a company occurs and investigates how price discounts affect basic and differentiated service revenues according to seasonality. Based on a longitudinal design, two time-series analyses were performed using the ARIMA model, while another was carried out using a Generalized Estimating Equations divided into seasonal combinations. The results show, among other things, (1) that a company handles most of the marketing context strategies and programmed consequences of services used by consumers, creating a new commercial situation for the company, (2) the effects of price discounts on sophisticated services have a positive impact and produce higher revenues during the low season, while those related to basic services have a greater impact and produce greater revenue during the high season; and (3) the seasonality of the greatest purchasing intensity exerts a more positive influence on revenues than the seasonality of demand characterized by heterogeneous reinforcements. These findings are useful for the administration of price discounts to generate maximum revenue and make it possible to have a better understanding of the way the commercial cycle of a company functions.
