The global inflation rate reached almost nine percent in 2022 amid the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia and invasion of Ukraine. The inflation was particularly high in emerging and developing economies, where it reached almost 10 percent that year. Global inflation is expected to slow somewhat until 2025.

The annual monthly inflation rate in the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) increased steadily from February 2021 to October 2022, when the inflation rate reached 10.7 percent compared to the same month the previous year. However, it has been slowing slightly since, dropping to 5.4 percent as of July 2024. Over a third of consumers said that this impact would be major, while only one-tenth of consumers think that inflation will not have any impact on their Christmas shopping.

In a survey conducted by Rakuten Insight in March 2023, 43 percent of the respondents in the Philippines stated that their households were significantly impacted by inflation. In comparison, 14 percent of the respondents in China were significantly impacted by inflation as of March 2023.

According to a September 2023 study on the impact of inflation on travel planning in the United States, 77 percent of U.S. respondents mentioned changing something about their holiday plans as a result of high prices. In July 2022, respondents from Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Argentina, and Mexico were asked whether major events such as the pandemic, climate change, and the war in Ukraine had made them more or less secure about their food access. A majority of the respondents in each country said that they felt less secure in their access to food, with Brazil leading with 73 percent, followed by Colombia with 72 percent. The two countries with the lowest percentage of respondents who felt less secure were Argentina and Mexico with 58 percent each.

Guatemala recorded the highest wage growth worldwide in 2022 with an increase of 26 percent when using purchasing power parity U.S. dollars. Colombia and Vietnam followed behind. Worldwide, real wages fell by nearly one percent in 2022.

As of February 15, 2024, about 80 percent of the population of Afghanistan experienced and suffered from insufficient food consumption. It is only superseded by Somalia, where a share of 97 percent of the population suffers from insufficient food intake. The 12 countries shown here accounted for about 28 percent of the total number of people with insufficient food consumption. Not all countries are included in the monitoring of the source. Insufficient food consumption covers individuals who eat staples and vegetables daily, and also consume vegetable oil and pulses a few times a week, and everyone who eats less than that.Compared to September 19, 2022, the share of people in the top 12 has grown by three percent.

Average real wage growth has differed regionally between 2010 and 2022. Both Central and Western Asia and the Asia Pacific region (including China) have seen high rates of growth and have experienced minimal decreases. Growth peaked at 12.4% in 2021 for Central and Western Asia and 4.7% for the Asia Pacific region. However, much of the growth in the Asia Pacific region can be attributed to the growth of China. Inflation is generally defined as the continued increase in the average prices of goods and services in a given region. Following the extremely high global inflation experienced in the 1980s and 1990s, global inflation has been relatively stable since the turn of the millennium, usually hovering between three and five percent per year. While this is figure is over 100 times larger than the global average in most years, it actually marks a decrease in Venezuela's inflation rate, which had peaked at over 65,000 percent in 2018. Between 2016 and 2021, Venezuela experienced hyperinflation due to the government's excessive spending and printing of money in an attempt to curve its already-high inflation rate, and the wave of migrants that left the country resulted in one of the largest refugee crises in recent years. In addition to its economic problems, political instability and foreign sanctions pose further long-term problems for Venezuela. While hyperinflation may be coming to an end, it remains to be seen how much of an impact this will have on the economy, how living standards will change, and how many refugees may return in the coming years.

In March 2025, holiday centers, camping sites, and similar accommodation establishments reported the sharpest inflation rate among the selected travel and tourism services in the European Union, with the harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP) rising by 6.1 percent over the previous year. Meanwhile, passenger transport by underground and tram also recorded a high inflation rate in March 2025, with the HICP increasing by 4.8 percent compared to March 2024.

In 2024, the consumer price index (CPI) of package holidays in the United Kingdom grew by 8.1 percent over the previous year. This was one of the sharpest annual price increases recorded among the selected travel and tourism services in the UK. Meanwhile, accommodation services also reported a high annual inflation rate in 2024, with the CPI growing by 5.3 percent compared to 2023.

The travel price index (TPI) published by the U.S. Travel Association includes data on the changes in the consumer price index (CPI) of travel and tourism services in the United States, such as airline fares, lodging, and recreation. In 2023, the TPI went up by 2.5 percent compared to the previous year, while the CPI experienced year-over-year growth of 4.1 percent. As forecast, the TPI and CPI are expected to increase by 1.3 percent and 2.9 percent, respectively, in 2024 over the previous year.

In March 2025, the inflation rate for hotels, motels, inns, and similar accommodation establishments in the European Union was 3.8 percent. This figure represented a decline of 0.3 percentage points over the previous month.
