    Description

Inflation in Argentina was 54 percent in 2019, before falling to 42 percent in 2020. Despite Argentina's fluctuating economic instability over the twentieth century, the largest factor in its current economic status is the legacy of poor fiscal discipline left by the economic depression from 1998 to 2002. Although data is not available from 2014 to 2016, Argentina's inflation rate has been among the highest in the world for the past five years.

    What causes inflation?

Inflation is a rise in price levels for all goods. Major causes of inflation include an increase in money supply, low central bank interest rates, and expectation of inflation. In a country such as Argentina, the expectation can be one of the biggest obstacles. People expect inflation to be high and demand increasing wages, and firms continue raising prices because they expect the costs of inputs to increase. Banks follow suit, charging high interest rates on fixed deposits.

    Effects of inflation

Inflation negatively affects savers. 100 Argentinian pesos in 2018 was worth just under 75 pesos in 2019, after adjusting for the 34 percent inflation rate. Similarly, frequently changing prices has its own inherent cost, called “menu cost” after the price of printing new menus. Inflation will also have a positive effect on national debt when that debt is denominated in Argentinian pesos, because the pesos will be cheaper when the loan matures. However, the majority of Argentina’s debts are in foreign currency, which means that inflation will make these debts larger in peso terms.

    Description

Although the American Community Survey (ACS) produces population, demographic and housing unit estimates, it is the Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program that produces and disseminates the official estimates of the population for the nation, states, counties, cities, and towns and estimates of housing units for states and counties..Supporting documentation on code lists, subject definitions, data accuracy, and statistical testing can be found on the American Community Survey website in the Technical Documentation section.Sample size and data quality measures (including coverage rates, allocation rates, and response rates) can be found on the American Community Survey website in the Methodology section..Source: U.S. Census Bureau, 2015-2019 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates.Data are based on a sample and are subject to sampling variability. The degree of uncertainty for an estimate arising from sampling variability is represented through the use of a margin of error. The value shown here is the 90 percent margin of error. The margin of error can be interpreted roughly as providing a 90 percent probability that the interval defined by the estimate minus the margin of error and the estimate plus the margin of error (the lower and upper confidence bounds) contains the true value. In addition to sampling variability, the ACS estimates are subject to nonsampling error (for a discussion of nonsampling variability, see ACS Technical Documentation). The effect of nonsampling error is not represented in these tables..The Class of Worker status "unpaid family workers" may have earnings. Earnings reflect any earnings from all jobs held during the 12 months prior to the ACS interview. The Class of Worker status reflects the job or business held the week prior to the ACS interview, or the last job held by the respondent..In 2019, methodological changes were made to the class of worker question. These changes involved modifications to the question wording, the category wording, and the visual format of the categories on the questionnaire. The format for the class of worker categories are now listed under the headings "Private Sector Employee," "Government Employee," and "Self-Employed or Other." Additionally, the category of Active Duty was added as one of the response categories under the "Government Employee" section for the mail questionnaire. For more detailed information about the 2019 changes, see the 2016 American Community Survey Content Test Report for Class of Worker located at http://www.census.gov/library/working-papers/2017/acs/2017_Martinez_01.html..The 2015-2019 American Community Survey (ACS) data generally reflect the September 2018 Office of Management and Budget (OMB) delineations of metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas. In certain instances, the names, codes, and boundaries of the principal cities shown in ACS tables may differ from the OMB delineation lists due to differences in the effective dates of the geographic entities..Estimates of urban and rural populations, housing units, and characteristics reflect boundaries of urban areas defined based on Census 2010 data. As a result, data for urban and rural areas from the ACS do not necessarily reflect the results of ongoing urbanization..Explanation of Symbols:An "**" entry in the margin of error column indicates that either no sample observations or too few sample observations were available to compute a standard error and thus the margin of error. A statistical test is not appropriate. An "-" entry in the estimate column indicates that either no sample observations or too few sample observations were available to compute an estimate, or a ratio of medians cannot be calculated because one or both of the median estimates falls in the lowest interval or upper interval of an open-ended distribution, or the margin of error associated with a median was larger than the median itself. An "-" following a median estimate means the median falls in the lowest interval of an open-ended distribution. An "+" following a median estimate means the median falls in the upper interval of an open-ended distribution. An "***" entry in the margin of error column indicates that the median falls in the lowest interval or upper interval of an open-ended distribution. A statistical test is not appropriate. An "*****" entry in the margin of error column indicates that the estimate is controlled. A statistical test for sampling variability is not appropriate. An "N" entry in the estimate and margin of error columns indicates that data for this geographic area cannot be displayed because the number of sample cases is too small. An "(X)" means that the estimate is not applicable or not available.

This table contains projections (2019-2060) of the population of the Netherlands on 1 January by age (three groups) and population development: the number of live births, the number of deaths and foreign migration. In addition, the table contains demographic pressure, the total fertility rate per woman and the period life expectancy at birth and at age 65 by gender. The period life expectancy, calculated from a period survival table, is a summary measure of the mortality probabilities in a calendar year. It indicates how old people would live on average if the mortality probabilities-by-age of that year would apply throughout their lives. See section 4 for an explanation of the difference between the period survival table and a cohort survival table. Forecast intervals are also included in the table. Data available: 2019-2060 Status of the figures: The figures in this table are calculated forecast figures. Changes as of December 16, 2020: This table has been discontinued. See section 3 for the successor to this table. Changes as of December 17, 2019: None, this is a new table in which the previous forecast has been adjusted on the basis of the observations that have now become available. The forecast period now runs from 2019 to 2060. When will new figures be released? The publication frequency of this table is one-off. The new population forecast table will be published in December 2020.

    Description

This collection contains information on federal criminal cases sentenced under the Sentencing Guidelines and Policy Statements of the Sentencing Reform Act of 1984. The data files include all cases received by the United States Sentencing Commission that had sentencing dates between October 1, 2018, and September 30, 2019, and were assessed as constitutional. Constitutionality compares each case's sentencing date, circuit, district, and judge to provide uniformity in reporting the cases. In 1999, the United States Sentencing Commission added more variables from its databases to this collection, so the data are now provided in two files. Several variables iterate to include multiple occurrences of the same event. Part 1, Main Data, includes all noniterating variables plus the highest occurrences of each iterating variable. Part 2, Supplementary Data, includes the remaining iterations.

    Description

Global buy now, pay later (BNPL) transactions are predicted to increase by nearly 450 billion USD between 2021 and 2026. This would mean a further acceleration of what was seen between 2019 and 2021 - when the alternative payment method increased by almost 400 percent. Regardless, BNPL reached a global market share of around three percent in 2021 - with eight out of 10 top global buy now, pay later markets worldwide being located in northwestern Europe. The market share of BNPL services in domestic e-commerce payments in both Sweden and Germany, for instance, was around ten times higher than the market share in global e-commerce payments.

    Big international names, local competition?

Common names that spring to mind when it comes to BNPL include Klarna (Sweden), Affirm (United States), and Afterpay (Australia), as all three providers had millions of active users in 2021. The three are sometimes joined by Quadpay/Zip (United States) in some sources. These apps are popular in the United States, Canada, and Europe. Europeans, for instance, downloaded Klarna significantly more than other BNPL apps available to them. That is not to say all countries prefer BNPL through Klarna, however: In Switzerland, it is expected that one of the country’s most popular payment methods - mobile payment option TWINT – will implement payments in installments to compete with Klarna.

    Uncertainty going forward

It is uncertain whether the initial success of buy now, pay later will hold. In May 2022 – shortly after the figures provided here were released – Klarna announced it would cut roughly 10 percent of its global staff. CEO and co-founder Sebastian Siemiatkowski cited an expected decline in consumer spending, caused by the war in Ukraine and growing inflation worldwide since. Regardless, some experts still fear that having the option to do payments might be too enticing for low-income households – especially in a time of uncertainty when it comes to personal finance.
