The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. To measure the three variables, namely (a) Population (Male), (b) Population (Female), and (c) Gender Ratio (Males per 100 Females), we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the gender classifications (biological sex) reported by the US Census Bureau across 18 age groups, ranging from under 5 years to 85 years and above. These age groups are described above in the variables section. For further information regarding these estimates, please feel free to reach out to us via email at research@neilsberg.com.

    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the population of Puerto Rico by gender across 18 age groups. It lists the male and female population in each age group along with the gender ratio for Puerto Rico. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population distribution of Puerto Rico by gender and age. For example, using this dataset, we can identify the largest age group for both Men and Women in Puerto Rico. Additionally, it can be used to see how the gender ratio changes from birth to senior most age group and male to female ratio across each age group for Puerto Rico.

    Description

In 2023, the total population of Puerto Rico amounted to approximately 3.21 million inhabitants. The number of women who lived on this island exceeded the number of men by approximately 190,000. Population figures in this Caribbean island show a maintained downward trend at least since 2008. In part, this can be attributed to falling fertility levels and migration to the United States, where Puerto Ricans enjoy better rates of employment than on the island.

    Description

This study explored the lives of the working poor in the inner city. Three hundred male and female participants were drawn from central and west Harlem, New York City; 200 worked at one of four fast food restaurants in Harlem, and 100 had applied to one of those restaurants but were not hired. Participants were African American, Dominican and Puerto Rican of varied ages, most between 15 and 40 years of age. Educational status also varied, with the majority of participants' highest level of education being a high school degree. This study consists of three waves. The first wave was conducted in 1993-1994 with 300 participants. All 300 completed a survey, providing data on basic demographics (such as race, marital status, income, members of family, places where respondent has lived), as well as information on education, health care, and in-depth employment history. One-hundred fifty of these participants completed an extensive, semi-structured three to four hour interview telling their life history, covering topics such as family history; neighborhood identity; work history and aspirations; and race relations. Interviewers noted their impressions of the neighborhood and the physical appearance of the participant and her surroundings. The restaurant owners and managers were interviewed as well. Twelve of the participants agreed to be intensely studied; members of the research team worked alongside these participants at the fast food restaurants for four months, got to know their parents and children, and interviewed other key figures in their lives such as teachers and priests. The second wave was conducted in 1997-1998 with 100 of the original participants - some were employed, and some were unemployed. A survey was completed, addressing the same topics as the wave one survey. Interviews were conducted to ascertain life updates since wave one. The third wave was conducted in 2001-2002 with 40 of the 100 wave 2 participants. No more follow-up waves are planned. The Henry A. Murray Research Archives currently holds original record paper data, and audiotape data from waves 1 and 2 of this study.

    Measurement technique
The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. To measure the three variables, namely (a) male population, (b) female population and (b) total population, we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the age groups. For age groups we divided it into roughly a 5 year bucket for ages between 0 and 85. For over 85, we aggregated data into a single group for all ages. Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the data for the Puerto Rico population pyramid, which represents the Puerto Rico population distribution across age and gender, using estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. It lists the male and female population for each age group, along with the total population for those age groups. Higher numbers at the bottom of the table suggest population growth, whereas higher numbers at the top indicate declining birth rates. Furthermore, the dataset can be utilized to understand the youth dependency ratio, old-age dependency ratio, total dependency ratio, and potential support ratio.

    Key observations

    • Youth dependency ratio, which is the number of children aged 0-14 per 100 persons aged 15-64, for Puerto Rico, is 20.6.
    • Old-age dependency ratio, which is the number of persons aged 65 or over per 100 persons aged 15-64, for Puerto Rico, is 35.5.
    • Total dependency ratio for Puerto Rico is 56.1.
    • Potential support ratio, which is the number of youth (working age population) per elderly, for Puerto Rico is 2.8.

    Description

IntroductionFemale sex workers are a vulnerable hard-to-reach group. Research in this field is scarce due to several issues, such as methodological difficulties or societal stigmatization. Most of the available literature focuses on sexually transmittable diseases. This review and meta-analysis aim to compile literature on the mental health of female sex workers. We investigated the prevalence of as well as risk factors for mental disease among female sex workers globally.MethodsUtilizing Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we conducted a comprehensive search across several databases, ultimately analyzing data from 80 studies comprising 24,675 individuals in total.ResultsMost of the studies stemmed from the United States (n = 24), followed by China (n = 12), India (n = 7) and Kenya (n = 5). Four studies were conducted in South Africa and three in Mexico. Two studies originated from Australia, Cambodia, Thailand, the Netherlands, and Uganda. Single studies were identified from Scotland, Switzerland, Israel, Portugal, Mongolia, Malawi, Cameroon, Ukraine, Togo, Lebanon, the Dominican Republic, Tanzania, Puerto Rico, Ethiopia, and Moldova. The review highlights significant heterogeneity in the prevalence of mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, suicidality, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance use and dependence, investigating the influence of socio-economic, legal, and individual factors on these outcomes. The meta-analysis reveals that while factors like legal status of sex work and economic conditions did not show any impact, specific demographic characteristics, notably female sex workers living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), migrant female sex workers, or female sex workers engaged in substance use, exhibit notably higher mental health challenges.DiscussionThese findings suggest the critical need for targeted mental health interventions and policy reforms that consider the complex interplay of various factors affecting sex workers. Future research should focus on under-researched regions and subgroups within this population to enhance understanding and support the development of comprehensive health services.Systematic review registrationPROSPERO, CRD42022312737, available from: https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/display_record.php?ID=CRD42022312737.

Description
About this dataset

Context

The dataset tabulates the population of Puerto Rico by gender across 18 age groups. It lists the male and female population in each age group along with the gender ratio for Puerto Rico. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population distribution of Puerto Rico by gender and age. For example, using this dataset, we can identify the largest age group for both Men and Women in Puerto Rico. Additionally, it can be used to see how the gender ratio changes from birth to senior most age group and male to female ratio across each age group for Puerto Rico.

Key observations

Largest age group (population): Male # 25-29 years (111,781) | Female # 60-64 years (120,493). Source: U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates.

Scope of gender :

Please note that American Community Survey asks a question about the respondents current sex, but not about gender, sexual orientation, or sex at birth. The question is intended to capture data for biological sex, not gender. Respondents are supposed to respond with the answer as either of Male or Female. Our research and this dataset mirrors the data reported as Male and Female for gender distribution analysis.
