Between 1980 and 2022, around 15 percent of families in the United States reported to have had an event of incest in the family, while around 46 percent of rape victims who were children were raped by someone in their own family. Only 20 percent of incest victims reported the crime to law enforcement.
When looking at estimates of the number of people reporting incest in France between 2009 and 2020, it appears that the number of reported victims increased from 2 million to 6.7 million during the period studied. It can be assumed that this increase is not necessarily explained by a greater occurrence of these crimes, but by a relatively freer speech of the victims, who are relatively less afraid to testify about the violence they suffered in their childhood.
In France in 2023, around one French person out of ten declared they were victims of an incestuous situation, at least once, during their childhood. Most of these people were women and only 35 percent were men.
According to a survey conducted in 2023, in France, around ** percent of the respondents declared they knew someone in their close circle who was a victim of sexual assault by a family member when they were children.

Context:Even if Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) is frequently reported in childhood and adolescent, familial environment of these patients is rarely precisely examined. Objective:The main objective of our study is to describe the family interactions of adolescents who are victims of CSA, and then, to explore the differences in family profiles based on the existence of incestuous acts and/or to incestuous climate. Methods:This study was conducted with 425 adolescents aged 13 to 19 years, hospitalized in a psychiatric unit over the past four years, among which 107 reported CSA, including 39 intrafamilial and 45 extrafamilial CSA. An incestuous climate was observed in 72 families. Intrafamilial and extrafamilial CSA, as well as the incestuous climate, were the basis of a between-group comparison of DSM-V psychiatric disorders and family interactions, as measured by the At-Risk Family Interactions and Levers scale (ARFIL).Results:Families where CSA was identified among adolescents were more characterized by interactions of rejection (emotional coldness, devaluation, abandonment, etc.) and by a lack of family cohesion. Intrafamilial CSA was distinguished from extrafamilial CSA by the presence of an incestuous climate and a traumatic context. The risk of detecting intrafamilial CSA in an incestuous environment within the family was estimated at 4 (RR=4.09).Conclusion:These results suggest observation of family interactions using the ARFIL scale provide both an aid to the detection of CSA and a therapeutic lever for the management of these situations. In particular, identifying incestuous climate within families provides insights for improving the screening of adolescents who are victims of CSA. Family interactions should be systematically explored during medical care of adolescents and children.
When looking at the proportion of people who declared to have been victims of incest in France between 2009 and 2023, it appears that the share of reported victims increased from three to 11 percent over the study period. It can be assumed that this increase is not due to a greater occurrence of these crimes but to a liberation of the victims' speech who are less afraid to testify about the violence they suffered in their childhood.

This statistic shows the rate of sexual assault victims of police-reported family violence in Canada in 2016, distinguished by province. Among all provinces of Canada, 'Nunavut' had the highest rate of sexual assaults by family members with 111 victims per 100,000 population in 2016.
On the model of the #Metoo movement, which initiated a wave of testimonies from women denouncing sexual assault and harassment from 2017 onwards, following the revelations about the American producer Harvey Weinstein, the hashtag #Metooincest generated a proliferation of testimonies from victims of incest on social networks. When asked about this issue at the end of 2021, the French were relatively unanimous about the fact that this hashtag had a positive impact on the consideration of the child victims of incest.
In 2023, at least six-in-ten American adults among almost all religious groups believed that abortion should be legal in the case of rape or incest, Muslim Americans were the only exception with 52 percent. On the other hand, fewer than one-in-ten respondents among most religious groups believed that abortion should not be legal in the United States, regardless of the circumstance. This statistic illustrates the share of support toward the legalization of abortion in the United States in 2023, by circumstance and religion.
According to a survey conducted in South Korea in 2024, around ** percent of respondents stated that having an abortion because the pregnancy came about due to rape or incest is acceptable even after the 23rd week of pregnancy. Overall, ** percent supported abortion at some point during the pregnancy in the case of rape or incest.
Following the #Metoo movement, which resulted in a wave of testimonies from women denouncing sexual assault and harassment from 2017 onwards, after the revelations about the American producer Harvey Weinstein, the hashtag #Metooincest generated a proliferation of testimonies from victims of incest on social networks. When asked about this issue at the end of 2021, the French were relatively unanimous about the fact that this hashtag had a positive impact on the evolution of laws aimed at protecting child victims of sexual violence.
In 2022, about 194,164 perpetrators of child abuse in the United States were white. In that same year, about 83,314 perpetrators of child abuse were Hispanic, and 25,092 were of unknown ethnic origin.
Alaska saw the highest rape rate in the United States in 2023, with 118.4 rapes per 100,000 inhabitants. The lowest rate was found in New Jersey, with 17.9 rapes per 100,000 inhabitants. Sexual assault in Alaska Fighting sexual assault in Alaska is particularly difficult due to small, isolated, close-knit communities who can be wary of airing their dirty laundry to outsiders, as well as a low number of law enforcement employees in the state. In addition, Alaska’s low population is spread out over a large land area, meaning that in the event of an assault being reported to police, it can take law enforcement hours, or even days, to reach the most isolated communities. The victims of sexual assault There tends to be more reported female victims of sexual assault than male victims. However, since sexual assault is typically an underreported crime, especially among males, these figures could be, and probably are, much higher. In addition, many victims of sexual offenses tend to be young, although sexual assault can occur at any age.
In 2023, Texas had the highest number of forcible rape cases in the United States, with 15,097 reported rapes. Delaware had the lowest number of reported forcible rape cases at 194. Number vs. rate It is perhaps unsurprising that Texas and California reported the highest number of rapes, as these states have the highest population of states in the U.S. When looking at the rape rate, or the number of rapes per 100,000 of the population, a very different picture is painted: Alaska was the state with the highest rape rate in the country in 2023, with California ranking as 30th in the nation. The prevalence of rape Rape and sexual assault are notorious for being underreported crimes, which means that the prevalence of sex crimes is likely much higher than what is reported. Additionally, more than a third of women worry about being sexually assaulted, and most sexual assaults are perpetrated by someone the victim knew.
In 2019, about 22,600 medical exams were performed on presumed victims of sexual assault under the age of 18 in Colombia, down from approximately 22,800 one year before.
According to a survey conducted in France in 2023, among the respondents who knew an incest victim, in 58 percent of the cases, no complaint was filed.
In 2021, 107 abortions in Poland were performed after prenatal tests or other medical reasons indicated a high probability of severe and irreversible impairment of the fetus or an incurable life-threatening disease. Moreover, in 32 cases, the procedure was performed because the pregnancy threatened the life or health of the mother. There were no cases of abortion because there was a reasonable suspicion that the pregnancy was a result of a criminal act (such as rape or incest). Since 1995 the number of legal abortions in Poland has significantly decreased.
The current Act of 1993 allows for abortion when the pregnancy poses a threat to the life or health of a woman, or there is a high probability of severe and irreversible impairment of the fetus or an incurable disease threatening its life, or when the pregnancy is the result of a prohibited act (rape or incest). In the first two cases, termination of pregnancy is allowed until the fetus can live independently outside the mother's body. Regarding a prohibited act, if no more than 12 weeks have passed since the beginning of the pregnancy.
