The Cline Center Global News Index is a searchable database of textual features extracted from millions of news stories, specifically designed to provide comprehensive coverage of events around the world. In addition to searching documents for keywords, users can query metadata and features such as named entities extracted using Natural Language Processing (NLP) methods and variables that measure sentiment and emotional valence. Archer is a web application purpose-built by the Cline Center to enable researchers to access data from the Global News Index. Archer provides a user-friendly interface for querying the Global News Index (with the back-end indexing still handled by Solr). By default, queries are built using icons and drop-down menus. More technically-savvy users can use Lucene/Solr query syntax via a ‘raw query’ option. Archer allows users to save and iterate on their queries, and to visualize faceted query results, which can be helpful for users as they refine their queries. Additional Resources: - Access to Archer and the Global News Index is limited to account-holders. If you are interested in signing up for an account, please fill out the Archer Access Request Form so we can determine if you are eligible for access or not. - Current users who would like to provide feedback, such as reporting a bug or requesting a feature, can fill out the Archer User Feedback Form. - The Cline Center sends out periodic email newsletters to the Archer Users Group. The World Press Freedom Index (WPFI) is an annual ranking of countries compiled and published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) since 2002. This comprehensive index aims to assess and rank countries based on their press freedom records in the previous year. It provides valuable insights into the degree of freedom that journalists, news organizations, and netizens enjoy in each country, as well as the efforts made by authorities to uphold and protect this fundamental freedom.
Reporters Without Borders emphasizes that the WPFI exclusively focuses on press freedom and does not evaluate the quality of journalism or address human rights violations in a broader context. This dataset helps shed light on the status of press freedom around the world, which is crucial for maintaining an informed and democratic society.
The methodology for the WPFI has undergone significant changes over the years. Initially, it relied on seven general criteria, including pluralism, media independence, self-censorship, legislative framework, transparency, infrastructure, and abuses. However, in 2022, there was a major overhaul of the methodology, departing from the one used from 2013 to 2021. As a result, the criteria and thresholds for categorization have been adjusted to provide a more nuanced and accurate assessment of press freedom.
The WPFI now evaluates countries against five distinct categories to gauge their press freedom status. These categories are: 1. Political Context: Examining the political landscape's influence on press freedom. 2. Legal Framework: Assessing the legal structures in place to support or hinder press freedom. 3. Economic Context: Analyzing the economic factors that affect the media's independence and viability. 4. Sociocultural Context: Understanding the cultural and societal factors that impact press freedom. 5. Safety: Assessing the safety of journalists and media workers within a given country.
This dataset, with its revised methodology, offers a more comprehensive understanding of the complex interplay between various factors and press freedom worldwide. 🌐🗽📊
Here is the information about the columns in the dataset for the World Press Freedom Index (WPFI):

TwitterIn 2025, the United States had a press freedom index score of ***** points, down from ***** a year earlier. According to this global ranking, the greater the index score, the better the situation regarding press freedom in a given country. Despite a decrease in press freedom violations compared to in 2020, the index score in the United States was the worst on record in 2025 compared to previous years in the timeline. Why is press freedom in the U.S on the decline? Despite limited direct government control over how journalism is carried out in the United States, concentration of ownership in the country’s news landscape remains a significant issue, as does the gradual but consistent disappearance of local news outlets. The renewed influence of political figures — particularly President Donald Trump — continues to shape public discourse, with accusations of “fake news” still widespread in 2025. Distrust in the media remains high, and the waves of layoffs that began in 2023 continued through 2024 and into 2025, resulting in job losses for thousands of journalists and newsroom employees across the country. Falling trust in news Globally, more than half of journalists believe that the public has lost trust in the media over the last year. Unfortunately, this suspicion is not far from the truth. Only ** percent of U.S. respondents to a global survey considered journalists to be trustworthy. Further, almost ** percent of U.S. adults have no trust at all in the mass media to report the news accurately and fairly, close to double the share who felt the same way a decade earlier.
