The goals of the juvenile justice system in the United States have always been multiple, beginning with rehabilitation, the primary goal when the juvenile court was established. More recently, policies advocating accountability seem to have predominated over other goals of the court, and concern exists that structured decision-making (SDM) in support of individual accountability has begun to fundamentally change the juvenile justice system. This study examined the use of SDM in state correctional agencies in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio and in juvenile courts in three counties in each of those states. Data were collected in phases from March 1999 to August 2000 during periodic site visits. Probation officers, judges and referees, prosecutors, and defense attorneys were interviewed in each of the 12 courts. Each survey contained a core set of questions eliciting respondents' views of juvenile justice, disposition objectives, and the use and value of SDM. Questions relevant to particular decision-makers were also included. All respondents provided demographic information and information about their job experience in criminal justice and professional training.

This study was a multi-site, quasi-experimental investigation of risk assessment-informed pretrial release decisions relative to decisions made without risk assessments. The study objectives were to investigate whether use of pretrial risk assessments: 1) improved risk management decisions relative to practice as usual; 2) improved the fairness of pretrial release decisions for racial minorities relative to practice as usual; and 3) revealed judge-level variation in pretrial release decisions. Secondary, administrative data were gathered from four counties in Indiana. Apart from risk assessment information, all data represent public records: court, jail and prison. Variables gathered from the data sources fall into three main categories: defendant variables, pretrial release decisions, and pretrial misconduct outcomes. Examples of specific variables include: booking and release dates, bond amounts, number and type of charges, and demographic information (age, sex and race).

The MacArthur Mental Health Court (MHC) project is a longitudinal study examining the effectiveness of these specialty courts in reducing recidivism, reducing the number of jail days and stays, and increasing access to community mental health and substance use treatment. The study included four data collection sites (two in California, one in Minnesota, and one in Indiana), two samples (newly enrolled MHC clients and a comparison sample of offenders with mental illness in the traditional criminal justice system), two interview time points (baseline and 6-month follow-up), and the collection of objective criminal justice and court data up to 18 months post-enrollment in the MHC/post-arrest. This study was originally published through OpenICPSR.

This dataset provides information on the number of re-arrests by county and race. Below are a few items to note about the dataset: Re-arrest rates are given for a cohort of releases within a given year. The re-arrest rate is calculated based upon the number of individuals released that had an arrest within a year of their release date. County is based upon county of commitment. Parole violations (& possibly probation violations) are not captured in Indiana State Police (ISP) arrest data and will therefore be underrepresented in the data. Arrest data comes from the Criminal History Repository System (CHRIS). Data feeding into the CHRIS system comes from three main sources. Arrest data comes from the LiveScan system, which is used for fingerprinting and capturing other pertinent information at the time of the arrest. Criminal disposition data are maintained by prosecutors in ProsLink system, and by the courts in the Odyssey system. Arrest data are sent to ISP soon after the arrest occurs, but disposition data have a lag of approximately seven months as the case makes its way through the legal system. Text description of the original offenses are provided by the arresting officer when the offender is arrested. Later, the prosecutor's office or court provides a text description of the filed offenses, along with the Indiana Code title, article, chapter, and section (e.g.35-48-4-6). The filed offense may be amended later. The data refers to the "most recent" offenses (arrest or dispositioned). The date range for the data is 2013 to 2020. The data provides a one-year post-release analysis on the charges of recently released individuals.
This data collection represents the sixth in a series of statistical reports sponsored by the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The purpose of the series is to provide statistical information on how prosecutors and the courts dispose of criminal cases involving adults arrested for felony crimes. With this purpose in mind, information was collected on items such as an individual's arrest date, sentencing date, court charge, and case disposition.
