    Description

    These statistics update the English indices of deprivation 2015.

    The English indices of deprivation measure relative deprivation in small areas in England called lower-layer super output areas. The index of multiple deprivation is the most widely used of these indices.

    The statistical release and FAQ document (above) explain how the Indices of Deprivation 2019 (IoD2019) and the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD2019) can be used and expand on the headline points in the infographic. Both documents also help users navigate the various data files and guidance documents available.

    The first data file contains the IMD2019 ranks and deciles and is usually sufficient for the purposes of most users.

    Mapping resources and links to the IoD2019 explorer and Open Data Communities platform can be found on our IoD2019 mapping resource page.

    Further detail is available in the research report, which gives detailed guidance on how to interpret the data and presents some further findings, and the technical report, which describes the methodology and quality assurance processes underpinning the indices.

    We have also published supplementary outputs covering England and Wales.

    Description

    The English Indices of Deprivation 2010 provide a relative measure of deprivation at small area level across England. Areas are ranked from least deprived to most deprived on seven different dimensions of deprivation and an overall composite measure of multiple deprivation. Most of the data underlying the 2010 Indices are for the year 2008. The domains used in the Indices of Deprivation 2010 are: income deprivation; employment deprivation; health deprivation and disability; education deprivation; crime deprivation; barriers to housing and services deprivation; and living environment deprivation. Each of these domains has its own scores and ranks, allowing users to focus on specific aspects of deprivation. In addition, two supplementary indices measure income deprivation amongst children - the Income Deprivation Affecting Children Index (IDACI) - and older people - the Income Deprivation Affecting Older People Index (IDAOPI).This data was then combined with the LSOA boundaries in ArcGIS. The first data column is the Index of Multiple Deprivation Score. The second data column is the Rank of the Index of Multiple Deprivation Score. The LSOA with a rank of 1 is the most deprived, and 32482 the least deprived, on this overall measure. The IMD 2010 was constructed by combining the seven transformed domain scores, using the following weights: * Income (22.5%) * Employment (22.5%) * Health and Disability (13.5%) * Education, Skills and Training (13.5%) * Barriers to Housing and Services (9.3%) * Crime (9.3%) * Living Environment (9.3%) The the seven domain indices are each presented in separate tables available from the DCLG website. Data sourced from Data.gov.uk: http://data.gov.uk/dataset/index-of-multiple-deprivation and LSOA data from ONS Geoportal: https://geoportal.statistics.gov.uk/geoportal/catalog/main/home.page (the dataset date in this case refers to the date the data was uploaded). GIS vector data. This dataset was first accessioned in the EDINA ShareGeo Open repository on 2013-12-06 and migrated to Edinburgh DataShare on 2017-02-22.

    Description
    The English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) study is a longitudinal survey of ageing and quality of life among older people that explores the dynamic relationships between health and functioning, social networks and participation, and economic position as people plan for, move into and progress beyond retirement. The main objectives of ELSA are to:

    • construct waves of accessible and well-documented panel data;
    • provide these data in a convenient and timely fashion to the scientific and policy research community;
    • describe health trajectories, disability and healthy life expectancy in a representative sample of the English population aged 50 and over;
    • examine the relationship between economic position and health;
    • investigate the determinants of economic position in older age;
    • describe the timing of retirement and post-retirement labour market activity; and
    • understand the relationships between social support, household structure and the transfer of assets.

    Further information may be found on the the ELSA project website or the Natcen Social Research: ELSA web pages.

    Health conditions research with ELSA - June 2021

    The ELSA Data team have found some issues with historical data measuring health conditions. If you are intending to do any analysis looking at the following health conditions, then please contact elsadata@natcen.ac.uk for advice on how you should approach your analysis. The affected conditions are: eye conditions (glaucoma; diabetic eye disease; macular degeneration; cataract), CVD conditions (high blood pressure; angina; heart attack; Congestive Heart Failure; heart murmur; abnormal heart rhythm; diabetes; stroke; high cholesterol; other heart trouble) and chronic health conditions (chronic lung disease; asthma; arthritis; osteoporosis; cancer; Parkinson's Disease; emotional, nervous or psychiatric problems; Alzheimer's Disease; dementia; malignant blood disorder; multiple sclerosis or motor neurone disease).

    Secure Access Data:
    Secure Access versions of ELSA have more restrictive access conditions than versions available under the standard End User Licence or Special Licence (see 'Access' section below).

    Secure Access versions of ELSA include:
    • Primary Data from Wave 8 onwards (SN 8444) includes all the variables in the SL primary dataset (SN 8346) as well as day of birth, combined SIC 2003 code (5 digit), combined SOC 2000 code (4 digit), NS-SEC long version including and excluding unclassifiable and non-workers.
    • Pension Age Data from Wave 8 onwards (SN 8445) includes all the variables in the SL pension age data (SN 8375) as well as year reached pension age variable.
    • Detailed geographical identifier files for each wave, grouped by identifier held under SN 8423 (Index of Multiple Deprivation Score), SN 8424 (Local Authority District Pre-2009 Boundaries), SN 8438 (Local Authority District Post-2009 Boundaries), SN 8425 (Census 2001 Lower Layer Super Output Areas), SN 8434 (Census 2011 Lower Layer Super Output Areas), SN 8426(Census 2001 Middle Layer Super Output Areas), SN 8435 (Census 2011 Middle Layer Super Output Areas), SN 8427 (Population Density for Postcode Sectors), SN 8428 (Census 2001 Rural-Urban Indicators), SN 8436 (Census 2011 Rural-Urban Indicators).

    Where boundary changes have occurred, the geographic identifier has been split into two separate studies to reduce the risk of disclosure. Users are also only allowed one version of each identifier:

    • either SN 8424 (Local Authority District Pre-2009 Boundaries) or SN 8438 (Local Authority District Post-2009 Boundaries)
    • either SN 8425 (Census 2001 Lower Layer Super Output Areas) or SN 8434 (Census 2011 Lower Layer Super Output Areas)
    • either SN 8426 (Census 2001 Middle Layer Super Output Areas) or SN 8435 (Census 2011 Middle Layer Super Output Areas)
    • either SN 8428 (Census 2001 Rural-Urban Indicators) or SN 8436 (Census 2011 Rural-Urban Indicators)
    English Longitudinal Study of Ageing: Waves 1-10, 2002-2023: Index of Multiple Deprivation Score: Secure Access
    This dataset contains an Index of Multiple Deprivation Score variable for each Wave of ELSA to date, and a unique individual serial number variable is also included for matching to the main data files. These data have more restrictive access conditions than those available under the standard End User Licence or Special Licence (see 'Access' section).

    Latest edition information
    For the second edition (October 2024), data for waves 9 and 10 have been added to the study and data for waves 1 to 8 have been updated.

    Description

    Der „German Index of Socioeconomic Deprivation“ bildet regionale sozioökonomische Unterschiede auf verschiedenen räumlichen Ebenen ab. Für die Indexbildung werden acht Indikatoren aus den drei Kerndimensionen sozialer Ungleichheit - Bildung, Beruf und Einkommen - herangezogen. Eine höhere sozioökonomische Deprivation findet sich in Teilregionen der neuen Bundesländer, aber auch im Saarland, in Nordrhein-Westfalen und in Niedersachsen. Regionen mit höherer sozioökonomischer Deprivation weisen eine geringere Lebenserwartung, eine höhere Sterblichkeit und eine Häufung von Gesundheitsrisiken auf. Der German Index of Socioeconomic Deprivation ist für Forschung und Gesundheitsberichterstattung auf verschiedenen räumlichen Ebenen und für verschiedene Jahre verfügbar. Die Gesundheitsberichterstattung erschließt durch den Index neue Datenquellen für die Analyse der gesundheitlichen Ungleichheit. Die Konstruktion des GISD wird im Juni 2017 im Rahmen einer Orginalarbeit im Journal of Health Monitoring (JOHM) des Robert Koch-Institutes beschrieben.

    Description

    The European Deprivation Index was developed under the Townsend theorization of deprivation. Using data from the European Union - Statistics on Income and Living Conditions Survey, we obtained an indicator of individual deprivation. This indicator became the gold-standard variable, based on what we selected the variables at aggregate level (census 2001) to be included in the European Deprivation Index, a total of eight. The European Deprivation Index was produced for the smallest area unit possible (n = 16 094, mean/area = 643 inhabitants), parish level and municipality level, and resulted from the weighted sum of the previous variables. It was then classified into quintiles.More details here:Ribeiro, A. I., Mayer, A., Miranda, A., & Pina, M. F. (2017). Also available are maps of the SOA multiple deprivation measure and individual domains, a press release and a list of the indicators used in the updated deprivation measure.The Northern Ireland Multiple Deprivation Measure 2010 report (also available in large print) was published on 26 May 2010 along with further deprivation data at Output Area, Electoral Ward, Local Government District and Assembly Area levels. A description of indicators document and a guidance leaflet are available.The NIMDM 2010 is made up from 52 indicators mostly relating to the period 2007-2009. The indicators are grouped into seven types of 'domains' of deprivation weighted as follows:Income Deprivation 25%Employment Deprivation 25%Health Deprivation and Disability 15%Education, Skills and Training Deprivation 15%Proximity to Services 10%Living Environment 5%Crime and Disorder 5%Information on changes to Super Output Areas and the new Small Areas, following the 2011 Census, is available on the NISRA Geography page.In keeping with equality guidelines a policy screening form for the update to the measures has been completed.It is not advised to compare the deprivation measures across the UK as data definitions, collection methods and base populations are not the same across Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales. In November 2010 NISRA produced a recommendations document which sets out the recommendations for future deprivation measures.

    Description

    The National Material and Social Deprivation Indices (MSDI) for all Canadian Census enumeration areas (now called dissemination areas) were downloaded July 21, 2017 by CANUE staff from the INSPQ website. The indices were provided in Excel spreadsheets named TableEquivalenceCompleteCanada1991.xlxs; TableEquivalenceCompleteCanada1996.xlxs; TableEquivalenceCompleteCanada2001.xlxs; TableEquivalenceCompleteCanada2006.xlxs; andTableEquivalenceCompleteCanada2011.xlxs. Data for 2016 were provided directly to CANUE by INSPQ.ArcGIS was used by CANUE staff to associate the single link DMTI Spatial postal codes to the Statistics Canada enumeration/dissemination area boundary file, and then spatially join the MSDI data to DMTI single link postal codes using enumeration or dissemination area as a unique identifier. There may be many postal codes within a single enumeration or dissemination area - these will have the same index values. CANUE staff translated the variable names from French to English and added a distance attribute (maximum distance from postal code centroid to boundary of census area).

    Description

    In this analysis we have combined several data sources around the floods in Bangladesh in August 2017.

    Visualization

    • See attached map for a map visualization of this analysis.
    • See http://bit.ly/2uFezkY for a more interactive visualization in Carto.

    Situation

    Currently, in Bangladesh many water level measuring stations measure water levels that are above danger levels. This sets in triggers in motion for the partnership of the 510 Data Intitiative and the Red Cross Climate Centre to get into action.

    Indicators and sources

    In the attached map, we combined several sources:

    Detailed methodology Vulnerability

    • The above-mentioned poverty source file is on a raster level. This raster level poverty was transformed to admin-4 level geographic areas (source: https://data.humdata.org/dataset/bangladesh-admin-level-4-boundaries), by taking a population-weighted average. (Source population also Worldpop).
    • The district-level PCA components from abovementioned reports were matched to the geodata based on district names, and thus joined to the admin-4 level areas, which now contain a poverty value as well as Deprivation Index value. Note that all admin-4 areas within one district (admin-2) obviously all have the same value. The poverty rates do differ between all admin-4 areas.
    • Lastly, both variables were transformed to a 0-10 score (linearly), and a geomean was taken to calculate the final index of the two. A geomean (as opposed to an arithmetic mean) is often used in calculating composite risk indices, for example in the widely used INFORM-framework (www.inform-index.org).

    Description

    Urbanisation brings with it rapid socio-economic change with volatile livelihoods and unstable ownership of assets. Yet, current measures of wealth are based predominantly on static livelihoods found in rural areas. We sought to assess the extent to which seven common measures of wealth appropriately capture vulnerability to poverty in urban areas. We then sought to develop a measure that captures the characteristics of one urban area in Nepal. We collected and analysed data from 1,180 households collected during a survey conducted between November 2017 and January 2018 and designed to be representative of the Kathmandu valley. A separate survey of a sub set of households was conducted using participatory qualitative methods in slum and non-slum neighbourhoods. A series of currently used indices of deprivation were calculated from questionnaire data. We used bivariate statistical methods to examine the association between each index and identify characteristics of poor and non-poor. Qualitative data was used to identify characteristics of poverty from the perspective of urban poor communities which were used to construct an Urban Poverty Index that combined asset and consumption focused context specific measures of poverty that could be proxied by easily measured indicators as assessed through multivariate modelling. We found a strong but not perfect association between each measure of poverty. There was disagreement when comparing the consumption and deprivation index on the classification of 19% of the sample. Choice of short-term monetary and longer-term capital approaches accounted for much of the difference. Those who reported migrating due to economic necessity were most likely to be categorised as poor. A combined index was developed to capture these dimension of poverty and understand urban vulnerability. A second version of the index was constructed that can be computed using a smaller range of variables to identify those in poverty. Current measures may hide important aspects of urban poverty. Those who migrate out of economic necessity are particularly vulnerable. A composite index of socioeconomic status helps to capture the complex nature of economic vulnerability.
