Non-residential electricity prices in the Netherlands for an annual consumption of 500 to 2,000 megawatt-hours averaged 17.62 euro cents per kilowatt-hour in 2022. This was the highest price recorded in a decade, reached after a steady growth of electricity prices in the country from 2019 that boomed during the global energy crisis of 2022.

In October 2024, the average wholesale electricity price in the Netherlands amounted to 87.8 euros per megawatt-hour, an increase from the previous month. Figures reached a record high of 447 euros per megawatt-hour in August 2022.

This table shows the average prices paid for natural gas and electricity. The total prices represent the sum of energy supply prices and network prices.

The total price is the price paid by an end-user, for instance a household or an industrial company consuming energy in their production process. Natural gas used for non-energy purposes or for electricity generation is excluded from the data.

The price cap set by the Dutch government for 2023 has now been incorporated into the prices.

This table contains consumer prices for electricity and gas. Weighted average monthly prices are published broken down into transport rate, delivery rates and taxes, both including and excluding VAT. These prices are published on a monthly basis. The prices presented in this table were used to compile the CPI up to May 2023. Prices for newly offered contracts were collected. Contract types that are no longer offered, but have been in previous reporting periods, are imputed. The average can therefore diverge from the prices paid for energy contracts by Dutch households.

In 2020, Liander was the operating manager (DSO or distribution system operator) with the highest market share in the Dutch electricity market. The Netherlands has a single electricity market, where taxes are imposed on a national basis. The country’s distribution network, however, operates on different regional levels. Liander, for example, operates in the Amsterdam area, whereas Stedin is active in cities like Rotterdam, Utrecht, and most of the South Holland and Utrecht provinces. Enexis operates in Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, Noord-Brabant, and Limburg.

What about energy companies in the Netherlands?

With Liander being the biggest electricity system operator, who is the biggest energy supplier in the Netherlands? As of 2018, it was estimated that Essent/energiedirect.nl had the most clients of all private energy companies active in the country. Market data for energy suppliers in the Netherlands is something domestic sources struggle to collect. In 2004, the Dutch government liberalized the supply of electricity and natural gas, allowing more energy suppliers to enter the market. As these companies do not have to openly share their data, the exact market shares are difficult to determine. This is different than in for example Belgium and Luxembourg, where companies have to share their data with the local authorities.

Electricity prices In the second half of 2021, the average electricity price for Dutch households was 14.5 euro cents per kilowatt-hour for a medium annual consumption (2.500 – 5.000 kilowatt-hours). This marked a price increase compared to a minimum reached in the first half of the year. In contrast, industrial prices of electricity did not drop in 2020 and increased continuously until 2021 instead.

In 2023, imports of non-electric industrial or laboratory furnaces and ovens into the Netherlands soared to 3.3K units, picking up by 58% on 2022 figures.

As of 9 March 2023, this table will be published monthly, providing the average consumer prices paid (on average) by Dutch households for electricity and gas upon taking out a new variable contract. This table will be discontinued as of June 2023.

The Dutch non-electric industrial furnace market was finally on the rise to reach $338M in 2023, after four years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption saw a buoyant expansion. Non-electric industrial furnace consumption peaked at $935M in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2023, the Dutch electric blanket market increased by 29% to $16M, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, consumption showed a remarkable increase. Electric blanket consumption peaked in 2023 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2024, the Dutch electrical transformer market decreased by -4.9% to $3.3B, falling for the fourth year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption posted mild growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $8.8B. From 2021 to 2024, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.
