    Description

In 1955, the infant mortality rate in Turkey was 217 deaths per thousand live births; this means that for every child born in Turkey between 1950 and 1955, over one fifth of these would not survive past their first birthday. Since these records began, the rate of infant mortality in Turkey has fallen continuously during each five year period, with the largest rate of decline occurring in the 1980s. This increased rate can largely be attributed to campaigns of mass immunization and vaccination programs launched by the Turkish government. Infant mortality has continued to decline well into the 21st century, and in 2020, it is estimated that over 99 percent of all babies born in Turkey survive past their first birthday.

    Description

The infant mortality rate in France, for children under the age of one year old, was 182 deaths per thousand births in 1830. This means that for all babies born in 1830, over eighteen percent did not survive past their first birthday. Over the course of the next two centuries, this number has dropped significantly, reaching its lowest point ever in the 2015 to 2020 period, at three deaths per thousand births. Since the turn of the twentieth century, infant mortality in France has increased just two times, once in the 1910s as a result of the First World War and Spanish Flu pandemic, and then again in the 1940s due to the Second World War.

    Description

In 2023, the infant mortality rate in India was at about 24.5 deaths per 1,000 live births, a significant decrease from previous years. Infant mortality as an indicatorThe infant mortality rate is the number of deaths of children under one year of age per 1,000 live births. This rate is an important key indicator for a country’s health and standard of living; a low infant mortality rate indicates a high standard of healthcare. Causes of infant mortality include premature birth, sepsis or meningitis, sudden infant death syndrome, and pneumonia. Globally, the infant mortality rate has shrunk from 63 infant deaths per 1,000 live births to 27 since 1990 and is forecast to drop to 8 infant deaths per 1,000 live births by the year 2100. India’s rural problemWith 32 infant deaths per 1,000 live births, India is neither among the countries with the highest nor among those with the lowest infant mortality rate. Its decrease indicates an increase in medical care and hygiene, as well as a decrease in female infanticide. Increasing life expectancy at birth is another indicator that shows that the living conditions of the Indian population are improving. Still, India’s inhabitants predominantly live in rural areas, where standards of living as well as access to medical care and hygiene are traditionally lower and more complicated than in cities. Public health programs are thus put in place by the government to ensure further improvement.

    Description

In the early 1950s, the infant mortality rate in the area of present-day Bangladesh was estimated to be 211 deaths per thousand live births, meaning that more than two of every ten babies born in these years would not survive past their first birthday. While infant mortality would decline steadily throughout most of the late-20th century, infant mortality rates would briefly spike in the early 1970s, as a result of the Bangladesh War of Independence in 1971, the famine of 1974, and the transition period into independence. However, the decline in Bangladesh's infant mortality rate would largely resume upon its pre-war trajectory from the late 1970s onwards, and continue to decline well into the 21st century. As Bangladesh continues to see improvements in access to healthcare and nutrition, it is estimated in 2020, that for every thousand children born in Bangladesh, over 97 percent will live beyond the age of one year.
