    Description

    Context

In 1938, the Fair Labor Standards Act established a federal minimum wage of $0.25. Over the years, amendments to that act have raised the rate. Today, that rate is $7.25, having remained so since 2009. In this dataset, I map the journey this metric has taken, adding other economic indicators for each year.

4/26/2022 Update In addition, I have added a dataset which compares min wage increases to the political party which controlled the white house, senate, and house of representatives.

    Content

The dataset contains the minimum wage, inflation, unemployment rate, and GDP growth for each year.

    Description

In February 2026, inflation amounted to *** percent year-on-year, while wages grew by *** percent. Over the observed period, the inflation rate has not exceeded the rate of wage growth since January 2023. Post-pandemic inflation In the post covid-19 pandemic period, the U.S. like much of the world, was gripped by a period of high inflation. Consumer prices peaked at an annual rate of *** percent in June 2022, the fastest pace in four decades. In real terms, wages struggled to keep up, eroding purchasing power and leaving many households feeling poorer. Many Americans continued to worry about the state of the economy and felt their personal finances had deteriorated. Wage erosion in the U.S. At the start of 2026, the federal minimum wage in America remained at **** U.S. dollars an hour, where it has stood since 2009. Over that period, inflation has quietly eroded its value, cutting the real pay of the lowest paid workers year after year. Most regions have pushed their own floors higher, with the highest state minimums now reaching above ** U.S. dollars an hour in Washington D.C. and Washington State. Yet five states do not have a state-level minimum wage at all, leaving the federal rate as the minimum wage there.

    Description

In April 2026, the UK minimum wage for adults over the age of 21 will be 12.71 pounds per hour. For the 2026/27 financial year, there are four minimum wage categories, three of which are based on age and one for apprentice workers. Apprentices, and workers under the age of 18 will have a minimum wage of eight pounds an hour, increasing to 10.85 pounds for those aged 18 to 20. When the minimum wage was first introduced in 1999, there were just two age categories; 18 to 21, and 22 and over. This increased to three categories in 2004, four in 2010, and five between 2016 and 2023, before being reduced down to four in the most recent year. The living wage The living wage is an alternative minimum wage amount that employers in the UK can voluntarily pay their employees. It is calculated independently of the legal minimum wage and results in a higher value figure. In 2023/24, for example, the living wage was twelve pounds an hour for the UK as a whole and 13.15 for workers in London, where the cost of living is typically higher. This living wage is different from what the UK government has named the national living wage, which was 10.42 in the same financial year. Between 2011/12 and 2023/24, the living wage has increased by 4.80 pounds, while the London living wage has grown by 4.85 pounds. Wage growth cancelled-out by high inflation 2021-2023 For a long period between the middle of 2021 and late 2023, average wage growth in the UK was unable to keep up with record inflation levels, resulting in the biggest fall in disposable income since 1956. Although the UK government attempted to mitigate the impact of falling living standards through a series of cost of living payments, the situation has still been very difficult for households. After peaking at 11.1 percent in October 2022, the UK's inflation rate remained in double figures until March 2023, and did not fall to the preferred rate of two percent until May 2024. As of November 2024, regular weekly pay in the UK was growing by 5.6 percent in nominal terms, and 2.5 percent when adjusted for inflation.

    Description

Inflation rates experienced by different groups of consumers within a country vary. This is because the prices of goods and services and the expenditure patterns of consumers differ. The published inflation rate is used for important decisions regarding the preservation of consumer purchasing power. These include the adjustment of social grants and minimum wages by government and the benchmarking of returns by investors when making investment decisions. It is thus vital that inflation is measured accurately to ensure the purchasing power of consumers is preserved. Current measures of inflation published by Stats SA are applicable to typical consumers and are not relevant to each individual. This resource supplements a study that seeks to provide a publicly available model that can be used by consumers to calculate their personal rate of inflation.

As of January 1, 2026, the District of Columbia had the highest minimum wage in the U.S., at ***** U.S. dollars per hour. This was followed by the state of *********** which had ***** U.S. dollars per hour as the state minimum wage. Although minimum wages vary from state to state, five U.S. states do not have minimum wage legislation. Therefore, the federally mandated minimum wage of 7.25 U.S. dollars per hour applies there. Many below the minimum Minimum wage jobs in America are often viewed as “starter” roles for teenagers and young adults. The number of workers earning the federal minimum wage has dropped from nearly **** million in 1979 to fewer than ******* in 2024, as higher state and local minimums and wage growth have pulled many above that threshold. At the same time, around ******* workers still earned less than the federal floor in 2024. When the minimum wage falls behind Minimum wage work in America is concentrated in food preparation and serving jobs. Because the federal minimum has neither kept pace with inflation nor risen since 2009, its real value has steadily eroded. That makes it ever harder for low paid workers to cover basic living costs.

Description The National System of Consumer Price Indexes - SNIPC continuously and systematically produces the Extended National Consumer Price Index - IPCA, aimed at measuring the inflation rate for a group of products and services from retail trade, relative to household expenditure. That income range was created in order to guarantee a 90% coverage of families living in urban areas included in the National System of Consumer Price Indexes - SNIPC .

This price index has as collection units commercial and service-offering establishments, public service and Internet concessionaries, with data collected, in general, from the 01st to the 30th day of the month of reference.

Currently, the target population for the IPCA encompasses families with household income ranging from 1 to 40 minimum wages, from whatever source, living in urban areas covered by the SNIPC, which are: metropolitan areas of Belém, Fortaleza, Recife, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Vitória, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Curitiba, Porto Alegre, besides the Federal District and the municipalities of Goiânia and Campo Grande.

    Description

As of 2024, the average annual wage of Germany was 50,257 euros at current prices. This was a real increase of around 7,300 Euros (in constant 2024 prices) when compared with 2000. However, the wage increase in real terms was low between 2000 and 2009, and wage growth accelerated mainly in the period between 2009 and 2019. Comparisons with rest of the EU Within the European Union Luxembourg had an average annual salary of almost 80 thousand Euros, with Germany having an annual salary comparable to other large European Countries, such as the United Kingdom and France. In neighboring Poland, the average annual salary was just over 39 thousand U.S dollars, meaning that German’s earned, on average, 20 percent more than what their Polish counterparts did.
