    Introduction

Infographic Statistics: Infographics have emerged as a powerful tool in data communication, significantly enhancing content engagement and information retention. Approximately 60% of businesses have integrated infographics into their content strategies, recognizing their effectiveness in conveying complex data succinctly.

Content incorporating images and graphics, such as infographics, can achieve up to 650% higher engagement compared to text-only content. Furthermore, infographics are 30 times more likely to be read than purely textual articles, underscoring their appeal to audiences. The human brain processes visual information more efficiently, with 90% of information transmitted to the brain being visual.

Additionally, 65% of individuals are visual learners, highlighting the importance of visual aids in learning and information dissemination. When information is paired with relevant images, people retain 65% of the information three days later, compared to only 10% when it is presented without visuals.

These statistics demonstrate the critical role of infographics in enhancing communication, improving comprehension, and increasing audience engagement across various platforms.

Over the next five years up to 2028, global data creation is projected to grow to more than 394 zettabytes. In 2020, the amount of data created and replicated reached a new high. The growth was higher than previously expected, caused by the increased demand due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as more people worked and learned from home and used home entertainment options more often. Storage capacity also growing Only a small percentage of this newly created data is kept though, as just two percent of the data produced and consumed in 2020 was saved and retained into 2021. In line with the strong growth of the data volume, the installed base of storage capacity is forecast to increase, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 19.2 percent over the forecast period from 2020 to 2025. In 2020, the installed base of storage capacity reached 6.7 zettabytes.

    Description

As research and communication proficiency are ubiquitous in the academic and professional world, teaching students the necessary information and visual literacy skills has become increasingly important. Integrating information and visual literacy pedagogy into substantive coursework can enhance student comprehension of the material, and teach students to make a meaningful contribution to public awareness and understanding of political science. Yet faculty often find it challenging to include instruction in these skills with necessary coverage of substantive course material. This paper discusses the use of an infographic assignment in an introductory American government class as a tool to teach literacy skills and reinforce substantive course concepts. Encouraging students to distill academic research into an infographic requires students to understand the process of information creation, the role of visuals in communication, and how scholarship acts as a conversation, all key components of literacy in higher education.
