    Description

The Indigenous Community Infrastructure dataset depicts infrastructure projects across Canada that are supported by Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) targeted infrastructure funding. It contains data related to project category, description, status, departmental investment and community. The dataset allows the Department to pinpoint and share information about individual infrastructure projects in Indigenous communities, in a proactive and transparent manner, to: • Showcase where and how investments are carried out • Demonstrate the Government’s commitment to address socio-economic gaps between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities in Canada and improve access to high-quality services Projects featured in this Indigenous Community Infrastructure dataset are updated on a quarterly basis. Because some projects will benefit more than one community, the number of projects does not match the number of markers on the map or of entries in the dataset. The Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP) aims at addressing the lack of charging infrastructure in Canada, one of the key barriers to zero emission vehicle adoption by increasing the availability of localized charging where Canadians live, work, travel and play. This EV Infrastructure Planning Map identifies priority areas and accounts for available charging infrastructure and expected charging needs with a focus on public corridor charging. To optimize web performance when using the map, it is recommended you zoom into the areas you are exploring. Priority areas are identified on a scale ranging from lowest to highest priority. Public Corridor Charging includes the EV charging needs of those travelling longer distances on highways and major roads. The objective is to ensure that EV drivers can travel over the majority of Canada’s road network connecting most communities in an EV without being limited on vehicle range. The map identifies priority locations within 1.6 kilometres of major roads based on criteria such as, traffic, expected EV adoption and distance between chargers

Forest infrastructure mapping corresponds to the forest territory from which trees have been subtracted for infrastructure purposes, for example to install energy transmission lines, agricultural areas or hydroelectric reservoirs, or for purposes other than forest harvesting. The areas contained in this map date back to 2003. This map covers almost all of the territory south of the 52nd parallel of Quebec's public and private forest. The information constituting it comes from various sources. For example, the Quebec Topographic Database is used to map the discharge of hydroelectric reservoirs. The minimum mapping area is 0.1 ha.This third party metadata element was translated using an automated translation tool (Amazon Translate).

Contained within the 5th Edition (1978 to 1995) of the National Atlas of Canada are two maps. The first map shows the Canadian coal resources and infrastructure of the Canadian coal industry in 1982. Details given for coal resources are: coal-bearing formations (classed by geological period), coal zones and named coalfields. Infrastructure consists of existing and proposed coal mines, major coal users, coal transportation routes and coal trade symbols. The second map shows ranks and resources of Canadian coal. There are three small inset maps for Western Canada. The summary map and table show ranks and resources of Canadian coal, 1978. The tables identify mines, coal users and coal shipping terminals, and also give production summaries.

    Description

There are approximately 100 000 kilometres of transmission pipelines in Canada, 80 000 are natural gas pipelines and 23 000 crude oil pipelines. The map shows three types of pipelines: transmission trunk lines, gathering system field lines and distribution lines. Gathering pipelines move crude oil and natural gas from wells to processing facilities. After processing, feeder lines carry the hydrocarbons to the major, long distance transmission lines. Transmission lines deliver product to small-diameter distribution pipelines, as well as industrial users, local distributors, refineries or connection pipelines to the United States.

    Description

Ground ice melt caused by climate-induced permafrost degradation may trigger significant ecological change, damage infrastructure, and alter biogeochemical cycles. The fundamental ground ice mapping for Canada is now >20 years old and does not include significant new insights gained from recent field- and remote-sensing-based studies. New modelling incorporating paleogeography is presented in this paper to depict the distribution of three ground ice types (relict ice, segregated ice, and wedge ice) in northern Canada. The modelling uses an expert-system approach in a geographic information system (GIS), founded in conceptual principles gained from empirically based research, to predict ground ice abundance in near-surface permafrost. Datasets of surficial geology, deglaciation, paleovegetation, glacial lake and marine limits, and modern permafrost distribution allow representations in the models of paleoclimatic shifts, tree line migration, marine and glacial lake inundation, and terrestrial emergence, and their effect on ground ice abundance. The model outputs are generally consistent with field observations, indicating abundant relict ice in the western Arctic, where it has remained preserved since deglaciation in thick glacigenic sediments in continuous permafrost. Segregated ice is widely distributed in fine-grained deposits, occurring in the highest abundance in glacial lake and marine sediments. The modelled abundance of wedge ice largely reflects the exposure time of terrain to low air temperatures in tundra environments following deglaciation or marine/glacial lake inundation and is thus highest in the western Arctic. Holocene environmental changes result in reduced ice abundance where the tree line advanced during warmer periods. Published observations of thaw slumps and massive ice exposures, segregated ice and associated landforms, and ice wedges allow a favourable preliminary assessment of the models, and the results are generally comparable with the previous ground ice mapping for Canada. However, the model outputs are more spatially explicit and better reflect observed ground ice conditions in many regions. Synthetic modelling products that incorporated the previous ground ice information may therefore include inaccuracies. The presented modelling approach is a significant advance in permafrost mapping, but additional field observations and volumetric ice estimates from more areas in Canada are required to improve calibration and validation of small-scale ground ice modelling. The ground ice maps from this paper are available in the supplement in GeoTIFF format. Detailed information about the methods can be found in the publication to which this dataset is a supplement. Description

From 2019 to 2022, the Supporting Black Canadian Communities Initiative (SBCCI) played a crucial role in bolstering Black-led, Black-focused, and Black-serving (B3) nonprofit organizations across Canada through its Capital Assistance funding program. This initiative provided financial support to address critical infrastructure and equipment needs, thereby enhancing the capacity of these organizations to serve their communities effectively. The grants enabled B3 organizations to undertake minor renovations or retrofits of their facilities and to purchase essential equipment. The program’s primary objectives were to: 1) Enhance Organizational Capacity: By improving infrastructure and acquiring necessary equipment, B3 organizations were better equipped to fulfill their missions and manage their operations more efficiently. 2) Improve Service Delivery: With enhanced facilities and resources, these organizations could offer better services to Black communities across Canada. Organizations eligible for the program could apply for grants of up to $100,000. These funds were allocated for two main types of improvements: - Equipment Purchases (e.g., upgrading computers or software): To equip workspaces and community spaces are identified by red points on the attached map. - Renovations/Retrofits: To undertake improvements or modifications to existing facilities are indicated by green points on the map. - Both Equipment and Renovations/Retrofits (e.g., renovating community kitchens to increase capacity): Projects that include both types of funding are represented by blue points on the map. The dataset provided focuses exclusively on projects that have been completed and closed. It does not include projects that are still ongoing, those that were found ineligible for funding, or projects that could not be finished.
