Motivated by empirical evidence I uncover on the dynamics of French firms exports, I offer a novel theory of trade frictions. Firms only export into markets where they have a contact. They directly search for new trading partners, but also use their existing network of contacts to remotely search for new partners. I characterize the dynamic formation of an international network of exporters in this model. I structurally estimate this model on French data and confirm its predictions regarding the distribution of the number of foreign markets accessed by exporters and the geographic distribution of exports.

The Awamori market has been experiencing a significant surge in its market size, with a valuation of approximately USD 500 million in 2023. This figure is projected to rise to nearly USD 780 million by 2032, reflecting a healthy compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.1%. This upward trajectory is largely driven by increasing consumer interest in traditional alcoholic beverages and a growing appreciation for unique cultural heritage drinks worldwide. Factors such as the expanding global taste for premium spirits, coupled with the rising number of consumers seeking artisanal and craft experiences, are propelling the demand for Awamori, a traditional distilled beverage originating from Okinawa, Japan.
One of the primary growth factors for the Awamori market is its cultural significance and uniqueness. Awamori is known for its distinct production process, which involves using black koji mold and long-term fermentation, resulting in a rich and robust flavor profile that distinguishes it from other spirits. This uniqueness appeals to a niche market of connoisseurs and consumers who are eager to explore and appreciate exotic alcoholic beverages. The rise in cultural tourism and an increasing number of Japanese-themed restaurants and bars globally have further amplified its popularity, making Awamori a sought-after product in both local and international markets.
Moreover, the growing trend of premiumization in the alcoholic beverage industry has significantly benefitted the Awamori market. Consumers are increasingly willing to pay a premium for high-quality, authentic products that offer a unique taste experience. This trend has encouraged manufacturers to focus on producing aged Awamori, which is perceived as a premium product due to its refined taste and longer maturation process. The premiumization trend not only boosts the sales of high-end Awamori products but also enhances brand visibility and product differentiation in a competitive market.
The influence of digital marketing and e-commerce platforms cannot be overstated in the growth of the Awamori market. With an increase in online retail channels, consumers have greater access to diverse and niche products like Awamori. Online platforms facilitate wider product reach and consumer education about the history, production, and consumption of Awamori, thus driving its demand. Additionally, social media and influencer marketing have played a crucial role in promoting Awamori to younger demographics, who are increasingly seeking novel and culturally rich experiences, thereby expanding the market base.
In addition to the growing interest in traditional beverages like Awamori, there is a parallel trend in the culinary world that is gaining traction: the use of Umebosh. Umebosh, a type of pickled plum, is renowned for its distinct tart flavor and health benefits. This traditional Japanese ingredient is increasingly being incorporated into modern culinary creations, offering a unique taste that complements a variety of dishes. Its popularity is not only limited to food but also extends to beverages, where it is used to create refreshing cocktails and mixers. The rising global curiosity about Japanese cuisine and its diverse ingredients, such as Umebosh, is contributing to a broader appreciation for the intricate flavors that define Japanese culinary arts.
Regionally, the Asia Pacific continues to dominate the Awamori market due to its deep-rooted historical presence and cultural affinity in Japan. However, there is a notable surge in demand across North America and Europe, driven by the growing interest in Japanese culture and cuisine. These regions are witnessing an increasing number of Japanese-themed festivals and events, which often feature traditional beverages like Awamori, further bolstering its market presence. The growing expatriate Japanese population in these regions also contributes to the demand, as they seek familiar tastes from home, thus providing a steady growth trajectory for the Awamori market.
The Awamori market is distinctly segmented based on product type into aged Awamori and unaged Awamori. Aged Awamori, often referred to as 'Kusu,' is celebrated for its refined, complex flavors, which appeal to connoisseurs and those seeking a premium drinking experience. The aging process, which can span several decades, allows the spirit to develop depth and character, making it a luxury item in the spirits market. Its popularity is fueled by the globa
