Foreign Direct Investment in Vietnam increased by 11.72 USD Billion in June of 2025. This dataset provides - Vietnam Foreign Direct Investment - actual values, historical data, forecast, chart, statistics, economic calendar and news.
This dataset FDI main aggregates, BMD4 is updated every quarter and includes quarterly and annual aggregate inward and outward Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) flows, positions and income for OECD reporting economies and for non-OECD G20 countries (Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and South Africa).
It is a simplified dataset with fewer breakdowns compared to the other separate datasets specifically dedicated to FDI flows, FDI positions or FDI income aggregates. In this dataset, FDI statistics are presented on directional basis only (unless otherwise specified, see metadata attached at the reporting country level) and resident Special Purpose Entities (SPEs), when they exist, are excluded (unless otherwise stated, see metadata attached at the reporting country level).
FDI aggregates are measured in USD millions, in millions of national currency and as a share of GDP.
This dataset supports FDI aggregates indicators available from the FDI in Figures.
In 2014, many countries implemented the latest international standards for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) statistics:
This OECD database was launched in March 2015 which includes the data series reported by national experts according to BMD4. The data are for the most part based on balance of payments statistics published by Central Banks and Statistical Offices following the recommendations of the IMF’s BPM6 and the OECD’s BMD4. However, some of the data relate to other sources such as notifications or approvals.
Historical and unrevised series of FDI aggregates under the previous BMD3 methodology can be accessed in the archived dataset FDI series of BOP and IIP aggregates

In 2023, global inflows of foreign direct investment (FDI) amounted to approximately *** trillion U.S. dollars. This was a decrease of *** percent compared to the previous year. During the period of observation, the value of FDI was at its highest in 2016, reaching nearly *** trillion U.S. dollars.

Why is FDI important?
FDI has influences in the both the sending and receiving countries. In the recipient countries, FDI can be an important source of capital that might not otherwise be available. This is particularly true in less developed regions, such as in Africa. The countries which received the largest amount of foreign direct investment from the United States in 2019 were the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Luxembourg.
FDI flows to the United States
On the other hand, the countries that sent the most FDI to the United States in 2017 were Japan, the United Kingdom and Canada. There were about 8.7 million jobs offered in the U.S. due to foreign direct investments as of 2019.

In 2024, ** percent of adults in the United States invested in the stock market. This figure has remained steady over the last few years, and is still below the levels before the Great Recession, when it peaked in 2007 at ** percent. What is the stock market? The stock market can be defined as a group of stock exchanges, where investors can buy shares in a publicly traded company. In more recent years, it is estimated an increasing number of Americans are using neobrokers, making stock trading more accessible to investors. Other investments A significant number of people think stocks and bonds are the safest investments, while others point to real estate, gold, bonds, or a savings account. Since witnessing the significant one-day losses in the stock market during the Financial Crisis, many investors were turning towards these alternatives in hopes for more stability, particularly for investments with longer maturities. This could explain the decrease in this statistic since 2007. Nevertheless, some speculators enjoy chasing the short-run fluctuations, and others see value in choosing particular stocks.

After a peak in 2014, foreign direct investment (FDI) in Africa from the United States dropped to 44.81 billion U.S. dollars in 2020, but picked up again throughout the following years, reaching 56.29 in 2023. Africa receives lower FDI inflows than any other region. What is FDI? FDI is when investors from one country, in this case the United States, invest in firms that are based abroad. Often investors do this to earn higher returns due to a risk premium. They will seek markets where default risk is higher. If their investments mature, the returns are higher than they would be in a place with less risk. Effects of FDI The United States has higher FDI outflows than any other country, in large part because its economy is so large. In addition to seeking higher returns, some investors are interested in cultivating international relationships. This could be an effort to expand the consumer base, shore up supply chains, or for humanitarian or cultural reasons. For the receiving country, FDI means an increase in capital. For emerging markets, this can be critical. When the number of banks per country is low, capital access becomes difficult.
The value of foreign direct investment into Ireland in 2022 was **** billion U.S. dollars, compared with the previous year, when **** billion dollars of FDI was invested. Ireland invested **** billion dollars abroad in 2022, compared with the previous year, when **** billion dollars was invested abroad.
The value of foreign direct investment into the European Union in quarter two of 2024 was 595 million U.S. dollars, meaning that foreign investors in fact shown signs of recover after the last quarter of 2023 when their was a context of disinvestment in the European Union. On the other hand, European investors sent 63.4 billion U.S. dollars into investments outside of Europe during this quarter. Both net inward and outward FDI in Europe declined sharply in the second quarter of 2023, as deteriorating economic conditions in Europe led to a slowdown of investment. Nevertheless, current trends mark a turnaround, with the first two quarters of the year showing signs of recovery.
