    Description

The Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) is a system of interrelated surveys conducted annually by the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). IPEDS annually gathers information from about 6,400 colleges, universities, and technical and vocational institutions that participate in the federal student aid programs. Access Database: To eliminate the step of downloading IPEDS separately by survey component or select variables, IPEDS has made available the entire survey data for one collection year in the Microsoft Access format beginning with the 2004-05 IPEDS data collection year. Each database contains the relational data tables as well as the metadata tables that describe each data table, the variable titles, descriptions and variables types. Value codes and value labels are also available for all categorical variables. When downloading an IPEDS Access Database, the file is compressed using WinZip.

    Description

This data collection describes the number of institutional faculty and staff in postsecondary institutions of the United States by occupational activity, full- and part-time status, sex, and race/ethnicity. Beginning in 1993, this survey, conducted in odd-numbered years, replaces the EEO-6 survey administered by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Part 1 (Part D from IPEDS-S) provides institutional characteristics, such as state, region, and locale codes, and name of institution. Part 2 includes Parts A, B, C, E, and F of the Survey (IPEDS-S). Part 3 contains data collected by the IPEDS-CN Survey. The survey was sent to all higher education institutions and all other schools offering a baccalaureate degree or higher. In addition, staff data were collected from the remaining institutions via the consolidated form (IPEDS-CN). Information from the IPEDS-S form includes the distribution of full- and part-time staff by primary occupation, sex, and race/ethnicity, full-time faculty by academic rank and tenure, full-time new hires by sex and race/ethnicity, and contracted and donated services (E) (such as executive/administrative, faculty, technical and paraprofessionals, or clerical and secretarial) by occupational activity. Information from the IPEDS-CN form includes number of staff by employment status, primary occupation, and sex.

    Description

IPEDS collects data on postsecondary education in the United States in seven areas: institutional characteristics, institutional prices, enrollment, student financial aid, degrees and certificates conferred, student persistence and success, and institutional human and fiscal resources. IPEDS collects data on the number of students who complete a postsecondary education program by type of program and level of award (certificate or degree). Type of program is categorized according to the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP), a detailed coding system for postsecondary instructional programs. These data provide information on the number and location of completers by field. Business and industry, the military, and other groups that need to recruit individuals with particular skills use these data extensively. The data also help satisfy the mandate in the Carl D. Perkins Vocational Education Act for information on completions in postsecondary career and technical education programs

    Description

Abstract (en): This collection contains enrollment data only. Racial/ ethnic data are not included as in other years. Part 1, Institutional Characteristics, contains institutional characteristics data along with total enrollment for all institutions in the fall enrollment survey. Part 2, Enrollment Data, contains enrollment data for all institutions by full- or part-time status, level of study, type and control of institution, affiliation, and offered degrees. ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection: Performed consistency checks.; Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.. All postsecondary institutions in operation in 1989 in the United States and its outlying areas. All two-year and over postsecondary institutions were included along with a probability of selection sample of all less than two-year private institutions. 2006-01-18 File CB3736.ALL.PDF was removed from any previous datasets and flagged as a study-level file, so that it will accompany all downloads. The codebook for this collection is provided as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is provided on the ICPSR Web site.

IPEDS 2007-08 (https://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/) was a cross-sectional survey designed to collect basic data from all postsecondary institutions in the United States and the other jurisdictions. Key statistics produced from IPEDS 2007-08 allowed the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) to describe the size of one of the nation's largest enterprises--postsecondary education-- in terms of students enrolled, degrees and other awards earned, dollars expended, and staff employed. All Title IV institutions were required to respond to IPEDS (see Section 490 of the Higher Education Amendments of 1992 [P.L. 102-325; 20 U.S.C. 1070 et seq.]). IPEDS allowed other, non-Title IV institutions to participate on a voluntary basis, but only about 200 elected to respond.

    Description

This dataset contains data from the National Center for Education Statistics' Academic Library Survey, which was gathered every two years from 1996 - 2014, and annually in IPEDS starting in 2014 (this dataset has continued to only merge data every two years, following the original schedule). This data was merged, transformed, and used for research by Starr Hoffman and Samantha Godbey. This data was merged using R; R scripts for this merge can be made available upon request. Some variables changed names or definitions during this time; a view of these variables over time is provided in the related Figshare Project. Carnegie Classification changed several times during this period; all Carnegie classifications were crosswalked to the 2000 classification version; that information is also provided in the related Figshare Project. This data was used for research published in several articles, conference papers, and posters starting in 2018 (some of this research used an older version of the dataset which was deposited in the University of Nevada, Las Vegas's repository).SourcesAll data sources were downloaded from the National Center for Education Statistics website https://nces.ed.gov/.
