Description

Abstract During the first half of the twentieth century, the coal-producing region of Santa Catarina state underwent intense industrialization that directly impacted various ways of life; various health problems emerged in the region as a result of coal mining and impeded economic progress. As the government was unable to meet health demands, local businesses established partnerships with female religious orders that provided assistance services in the villages where workers lived. As part of such a partnership, the Pequenas Irmãs da Divina Providência created an album of texts, drawings, and photographs as a report describing their activities from 1955 to 1957 in one such village in the region.

    Measurement technique

The simulation component of our storyline analysis makes use of CAM5 within the Community Earth System Model (CESM) framework to explore climate change impacts on Hurricane Irma. CESM can be downloaded here: https://www.cesm.ucar.edu/models/cesm2/download

    Description

Understanding how extreme weather, such as tropical cyclones, will change with future climate warming is an interesting computational challenge. Here, the hindcast approach is used to create different storylines of a particular tropical cyclone, Hurricane Irma (2017). Using the Community Atmosphere Model, we explore how Irma's precipitation would change under various levels of climate warming. Analysis is focused on a 48-hour period where the simulated hurricane tracks reasonably represent Irma's observed track. Under future scenarios of 2 K, 3 K, and 4 K global average surface temperature increase above pre-industrial levels, the mean 3-hourly rainfall rates in the simulated storms increase by 3-7%/K compared to present. This change increases in magnitude for the 95th and 99th percentile 3-hourly rates, which intensify by 10-13%/K and 17-21%/K, respectively. Over Florida, the simulated mean rainfall accumulations increase by 16-26%/K, with local maxima increasing by 18-43%/K. All percent changes increase monotonically with warming level.

    Description

During and after Hurricane Irma, the US Geological Survey recorded high water marks across the affected area, as they do for every major storm [https://www.usgs.gov/special-topic/hurricane-irma]. The files in this dataset provide 506 high water marks for Hurricane Irma flooding, and 202 peak sites. These files were downloaded following the steps below. If you'd like to check the original sources again, or search for HWM for a different storm, you may find these directions helpful.

The High Water Marks can also be visualized directly from the USGS Flood Event Viewer for Irma [https://stn.wim.usgs.gov/fev/#IrmaSeptember2017]

On August 30, 2017, Hurricane Irma developed near the Cape Verde Islands and began its destructive path hitting the Leeward Islands on September 6, 2017 as it reached a category 5 hurricane with winds at 185 mph and a minimum pressure of 914hPal 27, inHg. Irma caused major damage as it moved through Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, Montserrat, St. Martin, St. Barthelemy, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Florida Keys, and southern Florida. At approximately 9:10 a.m. on September 10, 2017, the storm made landfall in the Florida Keys as a Category 4, and at approximately 3:35 p.m. was downgraded to a category 3. By Monday, September 11, 2017, Irma was again downgraded to a tropical storm heading for Georgia and South Carolina.Damage assessments of Florida's Power Reference: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

    Description

This dataset defines storm-induced coastal erosion hazards for the Florida, Georgia and South Carolina coastline. The analysis was based on a storm-impact scaling model that used observations of beach morphology combined with sophisticated hydrodynamic models to predict how the coast would respond to the direct landfall of Hurricane Irma in September 2017. Storm-induced water levels, due to both surge and waves, were compared to beach and dune elevations to determine the probabilities of the three types of coastal change: collision (dune erosion), overwash, and inundation. All hydrodynamic and morphologic variables are included in this dataset.
