Income and wealth in the United States After the economic recession in 2009, income inequality in the U.S. is more prominent across many metropolitan areas. The Northeast region is regarded as one of the wealthiest in the country. Maryland, New Jersey, and Massachusetts were among the states with the highest median household income in 2020. In terms of income by race and ethnicity, the average income of Asian households was 94,903 U.S. dollars in 2020, while the median income for Black households was around half of that figure. In the financial year 2021, a majority of Indian households fell under the aspirers category, earning between 125,000 and 500,000 Indian rupees a year. On the other hand, about three percent of households that same year, accounted for the rich, earning over 3 million rupees annually. The middle class more than doubled that year compared to 14 percent in financial year 2005.

Middle-class income group and the COVID-19 pandemic

During the COVID-19 pandemic specifically during the lockdown in March 2020, loss of incomes hit the entire household income spectrum. However, research showed the severest affected groups were the upper middle- and middle-class income brackets. In addition, unemployment rates were rampant nationwide that further lead to a dismally low GDP. Despite job recoveries over the last few months, improvement in incomes were insignificant.

Economic inequality

While India maybe one of the fastest growing economies in the world, it is also one of the most vulnerable and severely afflicted economies in terms of economic inequality. The vast discrepancy between the rich and poor has been prominent since the last three decades. The rich continue to grow richer at a faster pace while the impoverished struggle more than ever before to earn a minimum wage. The widening gaps in the economic structure affect women and children the most. This is a call for reinforcement in in the country’s social structure that emphasizes access to quality education and universal healthcare services.

Health in high-income countries Countries with the highest life expectancies are also often high-income countries with well-developed economic, social and health care systems, providing adequate resources and access to treatment for health concerns. Health care expenditure as a share of GDP varies per country; for example, spending in the United States is higher than in other OECD countries due to higher costs and prices for care services and products. In developed countries, the main burden of disease is often due to non-communicable diseases occurring in old age such as cardiovascular diseases and cancer. High burden in low-income countries The countries with the lowest life expectancy worldwide are all in Africa- including Chad, Lesotho, and Nigeria- with life expectancies reaching up to 20 years shorter than the average global life expectancy. Leading causes of death in low-income countries include respiratory infections and diarrheal diseases, as these countries are often hit with the double burden of infectious diseases plus non-communicable diseases, such as those related to cardiovascular pathologies. Additionally, these countries often lack the resources and infrastructure to sustain effective healthcare systems and fail to provide appropriate access and treatment for their populations.

The median annual earnings for full-time employees in the United Kingdom was approximately 37,430 British pounds in 2024, compared with 34,963 pounds in the previous year. In 2018, it was estimated that Congress members in Chile had one of the highest monthly salaries in Latin America. Each member of the Chilean Chamber of Deputies, the National Congress' lower chamber, received a gross monthly income of more than 23,000 U.S. dollars. Can Latin Americans survive on a minimum wage? What can a minimum wage afford in Latin America? Latin American real wages have generally risen in the past decade. However, consumers in this region still struggle to afford non-basic goods, such as tech products. Recent estimates reveal that, in order to buy an iPhone, Brazilian residents would have to work more than two months to be able to pay for it. A gaming console, on the other hand, could easily cost a Latin American worker several minimum wages.

In 2023, the disposable income of a household led by a Millennial in the United States was 97,866 U.S. dollars per year. Households led by someone born in Generation X, however, had a disposable income of around 113,886 U.S. dollars in 2023.

The estimated per capita income across Sikkim was the highest among Indian states at around 588 thousand Indian rupees in the financial year 2024. Meanwhile, it was the lowest in the northern state of Bihar at over 60 thousand rupees. India’s youngest state, Telangana stood in the fifth place. The country's average per capita income that year was an estimated 184 thousand rupees. What is per capita income? Per capita income is a measure of the average income earned per person in a given area in a certain period. It is calculated by dividing the area's total income by its total population. If absolute numbers are noted, India’s per capita income doubled from the financial year 2015 to 2023. Wealth inequality However, as per economists, the increase in the per capita income of a country does not always reflect an increase in the income of the entire population. Wealth distribution in India remains highly skewed. The average income hides the disbursal and inequality in a society. Especially in a society like India where the top one percent owned over 40 percent of the total wealth in 2022.

The average Dutch employee reached their highest annual salary between the age of 50 and 54 years old, at just over 50,000 thousand euros. Up to that point, the average annual salary generally increased, from about 1,500 euros per year for those under 15, to 51,900 for those 45-49 years old. After that age, average annual salaries decreased again, to about 17,300 euros for those 75 years and older. The average annual salary in the Netherlands in 2022 was just under 39,900 thousand euros, including bonuses.

 Highest salaries in the mining and quarrying industry  

Those looking to make a substantial amount of money were best off in the mining and quarrying industry, where average annual wages reached nearly 83.5 thousand euros in 2021. Employees in the electricity and gas supply sector earned roughly 62.7 thousand euros, and those working in finance made nearly as much, at 62,200 euros. On the lower end of the scale, employees in the accommodation and food serving industry earned an average annual salary of only 15.1 thousand euros.

Gender differences  

 In general, annual salaries for men were considerably higher than salaries for women. Whereas men earned an average annual salary of over 46.3 thousand in 2021, women in the Netherlands on average made about 29.7thousand euros annually. This was not just the result of men having a higher average hourly salary, to some extent this was also a consequence of women working fewer hours than men. Whereas men in the Netherlands on average worked 33.5 hours per week in 2021, women worked only 25.3 hours.

As of January 2024, the state of Uttar Pradesh in India has the highest average monthly salary of about 21 thousand Indian rupees. In contrast, Lakshadweep has the lowest average monthly salary of 14.26 thousand rupees during the same year.

The minimum salary for players in the NHL amounted to 750 thousand U.S. dollars in the 2023/24 season. The minimum salary for the league is agreed upon in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which is a basic contract between the NHL and the NHL Players' Association.

The minimum wage per day guaranteed by law in Mexico was decreed to increase by approximately 12 percent between 2024 and 2025, reaching 278.8 Mexican pesos in 2025. The Northern Free Zone located near the northern border was the exception, where the minimum daily wage increased to 419.88 Mexican pesos. Education and income disparity The income distribution is entirely a new story than minimum wages, in fact, there are many factors that influence the level of salaries for Mexican workers. One of the main differences is by the number of schooling years, someone with more than 18 years of study earns on average double than employees with seven to nine years. Moreover, the area of study, while statistics and finance mean salaries, the highest wages by degree, are above 30,000 Mexican pesos per month, others such as performing arts and theology rank as the lowest paying degrees in Mexico.
Poverty still among the main problems
Despite one of the main reasons for minimum wage increases being moving people out from poverty conditions, poverty continues to be one of the main problems Mexican society faces. The number of people living under poverty conditions has decreased by 8.54 million inhabitants from 2014 to 2022, nonetheless, the figure is still higher than 46.5 million. The poverty rate varies among states, with Chiapas leading the ranking with 67.4 percent of the population under such conditions, while both Baja California and Baja California Sur recorded less than 14 percent.

The national minimum wage per month in Spain increased steadily over the last years. The minimum monthly wage grew by about 89 percent from 2008 to 2024, with salaries increasing from 600 euros a month to 1,134 euros a month in 2023. In 2019, the Socialist government of Spain passed a decree by which the national minimum wage would be given a boost of 164 euros, therefore making it stand at 900 euros per month as of that year, the largest increase to date.

Salaries in Spain

Along with the monthly wage, the national minimum daily wage also grew consistently over the past years, with the gross minimum standing at 37.8 euros a day in 2024 relative to 20 euros a day in 2008. Annual wages in Spain have however not followed this trend and fluctuated greatly during the same period. The highest average wage registered in Spain took place in 2009, year in which the mean salary amounted to over 30,000 euros a year after a period of ongoing growth. Spanish salaries however initiated a downtrend that prompted the average worker to earn approximately 29,113 thousand euros a year in 2022.

Salaries in Europe

Iceland ranked as the European country that featured the highest salaries in 2022, with an average wage of approximately 79,473 euros a year. Luxembourg and Switzerland followed second and third, with average salaries of 78,000 and 73,000 a year, respectively. In terms of growth, Portugal ranked as the country that saw the lowest decrease in salaries in 2022 compared to the previous year, with a development of -0.2 percent more relative to 2021, during that year, no European country registered an increase in real wages.

The estimated per capita income across the state of Uttar Pradesh in India stood at around 94 thousand Indian rupees in the financial year 2024. There was a consistent increase in the income per capita in the state since the financial year 2012 till 2020. However, it had one of the lowest income per capita per state in India.

Portugal, Canada, and the United States were the countries with the highest house price to income ratio in 2024. In all three countries, the index exceeded 130 index points, while the average for all OECD countries stood at 116.2 index points. The index measures the development of housing affordability and is calculated by dividing nominal house price by nominal disposable income per head, with 2015 set as a base year when the index amounted to 100. An index value of 120, for example, would mean that house price growth has outpaced income growth by 20 percent since 2015. How have house prices worldwide changed since the COVID-19 pandemic? House prices started to rise gradually after the global financial crisis (2007–2008), but this trend accelerated with the pandemic. The countries with advanced economies, which usually have mature housing markets, experienced stronger growth than countries with emerging economies. Real house price growth (accounting for inflation) peaked in 2022 and has since lost some of the gain. Although, many countries experienced a decline in house prices, the global house price index shows that property prices in 2023 were still substantially higher than before COVID-19. Renting vs. buying In the past, house prices have grown faster than rents. However, the home affordability has been declining notably, with a direct impact on rental prices. As people struggle to buy a property of their own, they often turn to rental accommodation. This has resulted in a growing demand for rental apartments and soaring rental prices.

In 2024, the average annual full-time earnings for the top ten percent of earners in the United Kingdom was 72,150 British pounds, compared with 22,763 for the bottom ten percent of earners. As of this year, the average annual earnings for all full-time employees was 37,430 pounds, up from 34,963 pounds in the previous year. Strong wage growth continues in 2025 As of February 2025, wages in the UK were growing by approximately 5.9 percent compared with the previous year, with this falling to 5.6 percent if bonus pay is included. When adjusted for inflation, regular pay without bonuses grew by 2.1 percent, with overall pay including bonus pay rising by 1.9 percent. While UK wages have now outpaced inflation for almost two years, there was a long period between 2021 and 2023 when high inflation in the UK was rising faster than wages, one of the leading reasons behind a severe cost of living crisis at the time. UK's gender pay gap falls in 2024 For several years, the difference between average hourly earnings for men and women has been falling, with the UK's gender pay gap dropping to 13.1 percent in 2024, down from 27.5 percent in 1997. When examined by specific industry sectors, however, the discrepancy between male and female earnings can be much starker. In the financial services sector, for example, the gender pay gap was almost 30 percent, with professional, scientific and technical professions also having a relatively high gender pay gap rate of 20 percent.
