    Description

    The Earth′s climate is warming, especially in the mid- and high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. The northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris) breeds and haul-outs on islands and the mainland of Baja California, Mexico, and California, U.S.A. At the beginning of the 21st century, numbers of elephant seals in California are increasing, but the status of Baja California populations is unknown, and some data suggest they may be decreasing. We hypothesize that the elephant seal population of Baja California is experiencing a decline because the animals are not migrating as far south due to warming sea and air temperatures. Here we assessed population trends of the Baja California population, and climate change in the region. The numbers of northern elephant seals in Baja California colonies have been decreasing since the 1990s, and both the surface waters off Baja California and the local air temperatures have warmed during the last three decades. We propose that declining population sizes may be attributable to decreased migration towards the southern portions of the range in response to the observed temperature increases. Further research is needed to confirm our hypothesis; however, if true, it would imply that elephant seal colonies of Baja California and California are not demographically isolated which would pose challenges to environmental and management policies between Mexico and the United States.

    Every 10 years, the number of seats a state has in the U.S. House of Representatives, and therefore the Electoral College, changes based on population. While many states experienced no change in representation due to the 2020 Census, a few states gained or lost seats.     Establishing if species contractions were the result of natural phenomena or human induced landscape changes is essential for managing natural populations. Fishers (Martes pennanti) in California occur in two geographically and genetically isolated populations in the northwestern mountains and southern Sierra Nevada. Their isolation is hypothesized to have resulted from a decline in abundance and distribution associated with European settlement in the 1800s. However, there is little evidence to establish that fisher occupied the area between the two extant populations at that time. We analyzed 10 microsatellite loci from 275 contemporary and 21 historical fisher samples (1880–1920) to evaluate the demographic history of fisher in California. We did not find any evidence of a recent (post-European) bottleneck in the northwestern population. In the southern Sierra Nevada, genetic subdivision within the population strongly influenced bottleneck tests. After accounting for genetic subdivision, we found a bottleneck signal only in the northern and central portions of the southern Sierra Nevada, indicating that the southernmost tip of these mountains may have acted as a refugium for fisher during the anthropogenic changes of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Using a coalescent-based Bayesian analysis, we detected a 90% decline in effective population size and dated the time of decline to over a thousand years ago. We hypothesize that fisher distribution in California contracted to the two current population areas pre-European settlement, and that portions of the southern Sierra Nevada subsequently experienced another more recent bottleneck post-European settlement.

    Description

    As biparental care is crucial for breeding success in Procellariiformes seabirds (i.e., albatrosses and petrels), these species are expected to be choosy during pair formation. However, the choice of partners is limited in small-sized populations, which might lead to random pairing. In Procellariiformes, the consequences of such limitations for mating strategies have been examined in a single species. Here, we studied mate choice in another Procellariiforme, Bulwer’s petrel Bulweria bulwerii, in the Azores (ca 70 breeding pairs), where the species has suffered a dramatic population decline. We based our approach on both a 11-year demographic survey (capture-mark-recapture) and a genetic approach (microsatellites, n = 127 individuals). The genetic data suggest that this small population is not inbred and did not experience a genetic bottleneck. Moreover, pairing occurred randomly with respect to genetic relatedness, we detected no extrapair parentage (n = 35 offspring), and pair fecundity was unrelated to relatedness between partners. From our demographic survey, we detected no assortative mating with respect to body measurements and breeding experience and observed very few divorces, most of which were probably forced. This contrasts with the pattern previously observed in the much larger population from the Selvagens archipelago (assortative mating with respect to bill size and high divorce rate). We suggest that the Bulwer’s petrels from the Azores pair with any available partner and retain it as long as possible despite the fact that reproductive performance did not improve with pair common experience, possibly to avoid skipping breeding years in case of divorce. We recommend determining whether decreased choosiness during mate choice also occurs in reduced populations of other Procellariiform species. This might have implications for the conservation of small threatened seabird populations.

    Methods Field work was conducted on Vila islet, Santa Maria island, Azores archipelago, from 2002 to 2012 included. Adults were captured in their nesting burrows each year during incubation, and ringed for identification. Chicks were ringed before fledging. These capture-mark-recapture sessions enabled us to know the life-history of each ringed individual, year after year, that is, the nest it was occupying (nesting cavities were marked with individual numbers), whether or not it was breeding, the outcomes of its breeding attempts, the identity of its social partner(s) and its offspring. Adults were measured (wing length using a stopped ruler to the nearest mm; tarsus length, culmen length and bill depth at the gonys using a vernier calliper to the nearest 0.1 mm).

    Blood samples (50-100 µl) were collected from adults upon their first capture in 2002, 2003 and 2004. . Chicks were sampled a few days after hatching. We extracted bird DNA using the QIAmp Tissue Kit (QIAGEN). Eleven microsatellite loci (autosomal loci Bb2, Bb3, Bb7, Bb10, Bb12, Bb20, Bb21, Bb22, Bb23, Bb25, plus the sex-linked Bb11, Molecular Ecology Resources Primer Development Consortium 2010) were amplified by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Genotypes (number of base pairs at each allele for each locus) were analysed using GeneMapper 4.0 (Applied Biosystems). 118 adults (57 males, 61 females), including those that were genotyped, plus the offspring from 2002 to 2004 included, were sexed using molecular methods (Fridolfsson and Ellegren 1999, cited in our MS). The sex of 48 other adults (18 males, 30 females), including some chicks that later recruited into the breeding population, was inferred from that of their partner for which molecular sexing had been conducted.

    To check if the demographic bottleneck experienced by Bulwer’s petrels in the Azores was associated with a genetic bottleneck, we used the BOTTLENECK software, which relies on the method of Cornuet and Luikart (1996, cited in our MS). Relatedness between social partners was estimated using MER (Wang 2002; version 3 downloadable from http://www.zoo.cam.ac.uk/ioz), after excluding the sex-linked locus Bb11.

    We tested if there was an assortative mating based on body measurements or structural body size (PC1 scores of a Principal Component Analysis conducted on wing length, tarsus length and culmen length). To do this, we used two methods. First, we considered the pairs that were observed each year and we analysed our study years separately, after conducting Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) or Spearman rank correlations, according to whether or not the conditions for GLMs were met (that is, whether or not model residuals were normally distributed, Kéry and Hatfield 2003, cited in our MS). Second, we considered all the sexed pairs that were observed in our study together. In this situation, however, a given individual could be involved in several pair bonds (after e.g., the death of its former partner and/or a divorce). To overcome this problem, we used the MIXED procedure of SAS (with the Kenward-Roger degrees of freedom method, SAS Institute 2020), an equivalent of Generalized Linear Mixed Models which allows accounting for the correlations between observations concerning the same individual, can use data from individuals for which there are missing observations, allows within-individual effects to consist of continuous variables and to vary for the same individual, and analyses the data in their original form. To do this, we considered female (male) identity as a random effect.

    To test whether pairing occurred at random with respect to genetic relatedness, we compared the relatedness of pair mates with that of male-female pairs drawn at random using a resampling procedure implemented in RESAMPLING PROCEDURES Version 1.3 (Howell 2001, cited in our MS), to account for non-independence of individual pairs. The procedure was repeated 5000 times.

    To conduct parentage analyses, we compared chick genotypes with those of their social parents, and we excluded paternity (maternity) when the genotype of a chick mismatched that of its social father (mother) at two loci at least. A single mismatch between offspring and parental genotypes was interpreted as a mutation.

    Only birds known to have made at least one breeding attempt in the past were used when calculating mate fidelity rates and determining the causes of divorce. Mate fidelity was defined as 1 minus the probability of divorce, the latter parameter being the total number of divorces divided by the total number of pair × years when both previous partners survive from one year to the next during the study period (Black 1996, cited in our MS).

    To determine whether (1) reproductive performance (i.e., the probability of fledging chick) increased with pair common experience and (2) whether the probability of divorce depended on pair common experience and previous reproductive performance, we performed logistic regerssions for repeated measures (GENMOD procedure of SAS, binomial distribution, logit link, with the pair as the 'repeated' subject). Results from these logistic regressions were obtained from the models using generalized estimating equations (GEE).

    About this dataset

    Context

    The dataset tabulates the Antioch population over the last 20 plus years. It lists the population for each year, along with the year on year change in population, as well as the change in percentage terms for each year. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population change of Antioch across the last two decades. For example, using this dataset, we can identify if the population is declining or increasing. If there is a change, when the population peaked, or if it is still growing and has not reached its peak. We can also compare the trend with the overall trend of United States population over the same period of time.

    In 2023, the population of Antioch was 117,096, a 1.14% increase year-by-year from 2022.     Pumas (Puma concolor; also known as mountain lions and cougars) in southern California live among a burgeoning human population of roughly 20 million people. Yet little is known of the consequences of attendant habitat loss and fragmentation, and human-caused puma mortality to puma population viability and genetic diversity. We examined genetic status of pumas in coastal mountains within the Peninsular Ranges south of Los Angeles, in San Diego, Riverside, and Orange counties. The Santa Ana Mountains are bounded by urbanization to the west, north, and east, and are separated from the eastern Peninsular Ranges to the southeast by a ten lane interstate highway (I-15). We analyzed DNA samples from 97 pumas sampled between 2001 and 2012. Genotypic data for forty-six microsatellite loci revealed that pumas sampled in the Santa Ana Mountains (n = 42) displayed lower genetic diversity than pumas from nearly every other region in California tested (n = 257), including those living in the Peninsular Ranges immediately to the east across I-15 (n = 55). Santa Ana Mountains pumas had high average pairwise relatedness, high individual internal relatedness, a low estimated effective population size, and strong evidence of a bottleneck and isolation from other populations in California. These and ecological findings provide clear evidence that Santa Ana Mountains pumas have been experiencing genetic impacts related to barriers to gene flow, and are a warning signal to wildlife managers and land use planners that mitigation efforts will be needed to stem further genetic and demographic decay in the Santa Ana Mountains puma population.

    Description

    Understanding how human activities influence immune response to environmental stressors can support biodiversity conservation across increasingly urbanizing landscapes. We studied a bobcat (Lynx rufus) population in urban southern California that experienced a rapid population decline from 2002–2005 due to notoedric mange. Because anticoagulant rodenticide (AR) exposure was an underlying complication in mange deaths, we aimed to understand sublethal contributions of urbanization and ARs on 65 biochemical markers of immune and organ function. Variance in immunological variables was primarily associated with AR exposure and secondarily with urbanization. Use of urban habitat and AR exposure has pervasive, complex and predictable effects on biochemical markers of immune and organ function in free-ranging bobcats that include impacts on neutrophil, lymphocyte and cytokine populations, total bilirubin and phosphorus. We find evidence of both inflammatory response and immune suppression associated with urban land use and rat poison exposure that could influence susceptibility to opportunistic infections. Consequently, AR exposure may influence mortality and has population-level effects, as previous work in the focal population has revealed substantial mortality caused by mange infection. The secondary effects of anticoagulant exposure may be a worldwide, largely unrecognized problem affecting a variety of vertebrate species in human-dominated environments.

    Measurement technique
    The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. To portray the number of individuals for both the genders (Male and Female), within each income bracket we conducted an initial analysis and categorization of the American Community Survey data. Households are categorized, and median incomes are reported based on the self-identified gender of the head of the household. Description

The Earth′s climate is warming, especially in the mid- and high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. The northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris) breeds and haul-outs on islands and the mainland of Baja California, Mexico, and California, U.S.A. At the beginning of the 21st century, numbers of elephant seals in California are increasing, but the status of Baja California populations is unknown, and some data suggest they may be decreasing. We hypothesize that the elephant seal population of Baja California is experiencing a decline because the animals are not migrating as far south due to warming sea and air temperatures. Here we assessed population trends of the Baja California population, and climate change in the region. The numbers of northern elephant seals in Baja California colonies have been decreasing since the 1990s, and both the surface waters off Baja California and the local air temperatures have warmed during the last three decades. We propose that declining population sizes may be attributable to decreased migration towards the southern portions of the range in response to the observed temperature increases. Further research is needed to confirm our hypothesis; however, if true, it would imply that elephant seal colonies of Baja California and California are not demographically isolated which would pose challenges to environmental and management policies between Mexico and the United States.
