The purpose of the study was to examine homicide trends in Chicago neighborhoods from 1980-2000 using HOMICIDES IN CHICAGO, 1965-1995 (ICPSR 6399), 1980-2000 Census data, and PROJECT ON HUMAN DEVELOPMENT IN CHICAGO NEIGHBORHOODS: COMMUNITY SURVEY, 1994-1995 (ICPSR 2766). Drawing on the social disorganization and concentrated disadvantage literature, this study used growth-curve modeling and semi-parametric group-based trajectory modeling to: (1) assess neighborhood variation in homicide trends; (2) identify the particular types of homicide trajectory that Chicago neighborhoods follow; (3) assess whether structural characteristics of neighborhoods influence homicide trends and trajectories; and (4) determine the extent to which the influence of structural characteristics is mediated by neighborhood levels of collective efficacy. This project extended prior research by not only describing the homicide trends and trajectories of Chicago neighborhoods, but also identifying the neighborhood characteristics that directly and indirectly influence those trends.

Rising global temperatures and urban heat island effects challenge environmental health and energy systems at the city level, particularly in summer. Increased heatwaves raise energy demand for cooling, stressing power facilities, increasing costs, and risking blackouts. Heat impacts vary across cities due to differences in urban morphology, geography, land use, and land cover, highlighting vulnerable areas needing targeted heat mitigation. Urban tree canopies, a nature-based solution, effectively mitigate heat. Trees provide shade and cooling through evaporation, improving thermal comfort, reducing air conditioning energy consumption, and enhancing climate resilience. This report focused on the ComEd service area in the Chicago Metropolitan Region and assessed the impacts of population growth, urbanization, climate change, and an ambitious plan to plant 1 million trees. The report evaluated planting 1 million trees to quantify regional cooling effects projected for the 2030s. Afforestation locations were selected to avoid interference with existing infrastructure. Key findings include (i) extreme hot hours (>95°F) will increase from 30 to 200 per year, adding 420 Cooling Degree Days (CCD) by the 2030s, (ii) greener areas can be up to 10°F cooler than less vegetated neighborhoods in summer, (iii) tree canopies can create localized cooling, reducing temperatures by 0.7°F and lowering annual CCD by 60 to 65, and (iv) afforestation can reduce the region’s temperature by 0.7°F, saving 400 to 1100 Megawatt hours of daily power usage during summer. According to figures recently released by the United States Census, America’s largest metro areas are currently gaining population at impressive rates. The growth in these areas is in fact driving much of the population growth across the nation. Upon closer examination of the data, this growth is the result of two very different migrations – one coming from the location choices of Americans themselves, the other shaped by where new immigrants from outside the United States are heading.While many metro areas are attracting a net-inflow of migrants from other parts of the country, in several of the largest metros – New York, Los Angeles., and Miami, especially – there is actually a net outflow of Americans to the rest of the country. Immigration is driving population growth in these places. Sunbelt metros like Houston, Dallas, and Phoenix, and knowledge hubs like Austin, Seattle, San Francisco, and the District of Columbia are gaining much more from domestic migration.This map charts overall or net migration – a combination of domestic and international migration. Most large metros, those with at least a million residents, had more people coming in than leaving. The metros with the highest levels of population growth due to migration are a mix of knowledge-based economies and Sunbelt metros, including Houston, Dallas, Miami, District of Columbia, San Francisco, Seattle, and Austin. Prior to the American Civil War, New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio were the most populous states in the Union, each with between two and four million inhabitants. Industrialization in the north was one of the key drivers of population growth during this period, through both internal and external migration, and Illinois saw the largest population growth during the 1860s largely due to the expansion of industry around Chicago. The gradual industrialization of the north in the early 1800s also contributed to the decline of slavery in the Union states, and the economic differences between the Union and Confederacy was a key factor in both the build-up to the Civil War, as well as the Union's eventual victory in 1865.
