    Description

The ISO certification service market, valued at $14,660 million in 2025, is projected to experience robust growth, driven by increasing global regulatory compliance requirements and a rising demand for quality management systems across diverse industries. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.6% from 2025 to 2033 signifies a substantial expansion, fueled by factors such as the growing adoption of ISO 9001 (Quality Management Systems), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems), and ISO 27001 (Information Security Management Systems). Businesses are increasingly recognizing the strategic advantages of ISO certifications, including enhanced brand reputation, improved operational efficiency, and access to new markets. The market's growth is further supported by the expanding digitalization across various sectors, necessitating robust cybersecurity standards and driving demand for ISO 27001 certifications. However, the high cost of certification and the complexity of implementation may act as potential restraints on market expansion. Leading players like Bureau Veritas, DNV, SGS, and Intertek are actively shaping the market landscape through their extensive service offerings and global reach. The competitive landscape is characterized by both established international players and regional certification bodies. The market is segmented based on certification type (e.g., ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 27001, etc.), industry (e.g., manufacturing, healthcare, IT), and region. While precise regional data is unavailable, it can be inferred that regions with high industrial activity and stringent regulatory frameworks, such as North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific, will likely represent the major market shares. The forecast period of 2025-2033 presents significant opportunities for market expansion, as businesses prioritize compliance and seek to demonstrate their commitment to quality and sustainability. Continued technological advancements and evolving regulatory landscapes will further drive the market's future growth trajectory.

    Description

Since its release in the mid-1990s, close to 37 000 facilities have been certified to ISO 14001, the international voluntary standard for environmental management systems. Yet, despite claims that the standard can be readily adapted to very different corporate and geographic settings, its take-up has been highly geographically variable. This paper contributes to a growing body of work concerned with explaining the uneven diffusion of ISO 14001 at the global level. Drawing from the existing theoretical and empirical literature we develop a series of hypotheses about how various economic, market, and regulatory factors influence the national count of ISO 14001 certifications. These hypotheses are then tested using econometric estimation techniques with data for a panel of 142 developed and developing countries. We find that per capita ISO 14001 counts are positively correlated with income per capita, stock of foreign direct investment, exports of goods and services to Europe and Japan, and pressure from civil society. Conversely, productivity and levels of state intervention are negatively correlated. The paper finishes by offering a number of recommendations to policymakers concerned with accelerating the diffusion of voluntary environmental standards.

    Description

Despite their availability to firms across the world, uptake of global voluntary standards has proceeded unevenly across countries over time. In this paper we seek to provide new insights into how geography shapes these spatiotemporal variations, focusing on two leading examples of codified voluntarism: ISO 14001 and the Global Compact (GC). In an advance on previous quantitative studies, which have analyzed domestic and nondomestic influences separately, we examine how the internal attributes of place condition' the influence of transnational spatial dependencies. We find that higher levels of ISO 14001 certification in other economies are more likely to spill over (via transnational linkages) into higher domestic uptake of the standard in wealthier economies, while domestic receptivity to the influence of higher GC adoptions abroad is greater in more democratic countries. Another important advance on previous studies is that we examine the influence of a larger number of measures of transnational economic linkage. Providing evidence oftrading-up' and investing-up' dynamics, we show that higher densities of ISO 14001 certificates and GC participants in a country's export and inward foreign direct investment partners are associated with higher levels of domestic uptake of the respective standard. We also find tentative evidence ofvisiting-up' dynamics associated with the cross-border movement of businesspeople.

    ISO Certification Market Outlook 2032

The global ISO certification market size was USD 10.3 Billion in 2023 and is likely to reach USD 35.4 Billion by 2032, expanding at a CAGR of 14.7% during 2024–2032. The market is propelled by the expansion of the construction industry.

Increasing globalization and market competition are expected to drive the market during the forecast period. Companies seek this certification to demonstrate compliance with international standards, enhancing their credibility and competitiveness in global markets. The trend towards sustainability and corporate responsibility further amplifies the need for ISO certifications such as ISO 14001 for environmental management, which helps businesses minimize their ecological footprint while improving operational efficiency.

Growing awareness of quality management standards among consumers and stakeholders is boosting the relevance of ISO 9001 certification. This certification applies to the processes that create and control the products and services an organization supplies, and prescribes systematic control of activities to ensure that the needs and expectations of customers are met. It is instrumental in building a structured framework that increases productivity and efficiency, reducing the occurrence of quality-related issues.

Rising emphasis on data security and privacy is propelling the adoption of ISO/IEC 27001, a specification for an information security management system (ISMS). Organizations implement this standard to manage the security of assets such as financial information, intellectual property, employee details, or information entrusted by third parties. In an era where cyber threats are becoming sophisticated, achieving ISO/IEC 27001 certification is crucial for protecting data and maintaining trust with clients and partners.

    Description

Businesses make a significant contribution to development and quality of life through the creation of wealth, jobs and added value, but not without consequences for theenvironment. Voices were immediately raised to curb the perverse effects of this development. To this end, the World Standards Organisation (ISO) has launched the international standard ISO 14001 "environmental management" to provide a reference framework for the implementation of environmental management. A number of studies have been carried out around the world to assess the impact of the implementation of this standard on business performance, but very few have been carried out in developing countries, such as Algeria. This contribution therefore aims to enrich thedebate on this issue. In this paper, we present the results of empirical research carried out on a sample of Algerian companies certified to the ISO 14001/2015 standard. Overall, the results show that this impact is effective in terms of controlling environmental aspects, but remains questionable when it comes to companies' economic imperatives.

    Description

ABSTRACT This article addresses Supply Chain Management (SCM), focusing specifically on environmental management systems. A systematic review of the literature identified gaps in SCM studies and supported the development of a diagnostic tool model capable of measuring the level of involvement of suppliers in a Supply Chain (CS) with the Environmental Management program of a focal firm. The results of this study were synthesized in a diagnostic tool on which elaboration was based on the LARG SCM model, the Dynamic Capabilities model, and the Learning to Grow Methodology. The proposed model was structured to measure, through a graph, the level of involvement of the suppliers of an SC with the environmental management requirements based on ISO 14001: 2015. The model was tested on the supply chain of a company that was included in the ISE (2017) Corporate Sustainability Index and was validated by the surveyed company.

    Description

This article focuses on the Global 500, which are the world’s largest companies by revenue, to examine the factors and dynamics internal to companies that motivate some corporations, but not others, to engage in transnational climate governance. Empirical results based on multilevel mixed-effects analyses, which separately identify the relative weight of firm and country-level factors, suggest that the likelihood that a firm participates in transnational climate governance (TCG) is higher when there exists a “policy supporter” who champions sustainability policies and when a company adopts explicit sustainability practices, such as the incorporation of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) principles. Voluntary climate action and carbon disclosure are more likely to take place when a company has a large asset base and certifies with the ISO 14001 environmental management standard. Moreover, the level of civil liberties that corporations enjoy in their respective country of origin is associated with participation in TCG. A decomposition of the variance indicates that firm-level factors account for a majority of the variance in TCG participation. This study has implications for climate change governance and policies, which have increasingly focused on concrete climate solutions and innovations by nonstate and substate actors.
